Good looking, a rather expensive flying distraction but ultimately, not a good pick...

Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa and this is a Warhammer 40k - Datasheet Review post! I have recently needed to take a new direction. All the details about that is found Here - The Great 40k Review Plan

This is not to just regurgitating the stats and skills. I provide my own assessment of what I think of the unit and its capabilities. Often... about how to use them best... or how to kill them best!

Hobby Fund - Working myself into the clear

With my hobby posts, I generate a hobby fund. 50% of the income goes into the fund. At the moment I put all my HBD earned from Warhammer posts into my alt account @zakl.hobbyfund.

I am collecting funds in the following ways: - Blogging about Warhammer to earn HBD - Accepting donations - Can be sent directly to @zakl.hobbyfund in HBD - Selling some of the collection to friends.

I will do a new estimation of what I owe soon!

Back to the review!

Drukhari, Razorwing Jetfighter

10th Edition Index

As it has been said a lot in our local hobby group and probably world-wide - there is not much love in the rules in Warhammer 40k at the moment for flyers and aircraft.

The consensus is that GW hates aircraft. Maybe someone was in charge that saw nearly every faction get their own aircraft butat that either after a lack of sales or a different person in charge, aircraft has been included, but not favoured well.

There used to be rules to make aircraft very difficult to shoot at unless you had special rules for it. This was to offset the fact that Aircraft do not hold Objective points on the board as every position and instance of them on the board is a temporary position as itmust keep moving (unless it has a Hover mode).

In any case... I would not say that the Razorwing is BAD, but compared to other units that you could put into your army for the same amount of points, it does not add up...let me show you what I mean!

170pts for the Jetfighter

Let's check its stats!

Stats

Movement 20"+ Toughness 8 Save 4+/6++(armor/invul/Feel No Pain) Wounds 10 Ld 6+ OC 0

Weapons

Weapon Loadout: 2 Dark Lances, Bladed wings, Razorwing Missiles, Twin Splinter Rifle

Options: The Twin Splinter Rifle can be exchanged for a Splinter Cannon... do. The Dark Lances can be exchanged for Disintegrator Cannons... don't - the Drukhari have plenty anti-Infantry shooting.

Ranged Weapons

Dark Lance

36" Range, 1 Shot, Hitting on 3+, S12, AP-3 and D6+2 Damage each.

Disintegrator Cannon

36" Range, 3 Shots, Hitting on 3+, S5, AP-2 and 2 Damage each.

Splinter Cannon

36" Range, 3 Shots, Hitting on 3+, S3, AP-1 and 2 Damage each. Sustained Hits 1 (On a 6 to hit, score 1 additional Hit) Anti-Infantry 3+ (Score a Critical Wound on a 3+ against all Infantry, regardless of Toughness)

Twin Splinter Rifle

24" Range, 1 Shot, Hitting on 3+, S2, AP0 and 1 Damage each. Assault (Can be fired while a unit is Advancing... Aircraft never advance...) Anti-Infantry 3+ (Score a Critical Wound on a 3+ against all Infantry, regardless of Toughness) Twin Linked - This weapon can re-roll to Wound Rapid Fire 1 - This weapon gets +1 Attack at half range... which is 12" and makes no sense on an Aircraft!

Razorwing Missiles - monoscythe missiles

48" Range, D6 Shots, Hitting on 3+, S6, AP-1 and 2 Damage each. Blast - (+1 Attacks for every 5 models in target unit, rounding down.)

Razorwing Missiles - shatterfield missiles

48" Range, D6 Shots, Hitting on 3+, S7, AP-1 and 1 Damage each. Blast - (+1 Attacks for every 5 models in target unit, rounding down.)

Razorwing Missiles - neurotoxin missiles

48" Range, D6+3 Shots, Hitting on 3+, S2, AP0 and 1 Damage each. Blast - (+1 Attacks for every 5 models in target unit, rounding down.) Anti-Infantry 2+ (Score a Critical Wound on a 2+ against all Infantry, regardless of Toughness)

Melee Weapons

Bladevanes

3 Attacks, Hitting on 4+, S6, AP0 and 1 Damage each.

Abilities

Stealth - When being shot at, the attackers do so at -1 To Hit. Deadly Demise D3 - When this unit is destroyed, roll a dice, on a 6 it explodes and deals D3 Mortal wounds to each unit within 6".

Ground Attack Craft

Each time this model makes a ranged attack that targets anything that does not have the Fly Keyword, it gets +1 to Hit.

Thoughts

170pts... we just reviewed a Ravager that was 100pts. The Jetfighter is technically faster but not in any way that counts. It has -1 Toughness and -1 Wound. It has 1 less Dark Lance.

It gains the missiles and the Splinter Cannon.

The missile profiles are also stupid. Monoscythe is for shooting at Marines and anything with 2 Wounds. Neurotoxin is for Light Infantry like Guard or even Orks with its 2+ to Wound and low AP but D6+3+Blast.

Leaving Shatterfield... which is useless... there is no scenario where it would be better to use this missile instead of Monosythe.

Instead, they should have given it a high Strength, low volume attack. Something like D3 shots, S9-10, AP-2, Dam 3. Then drop Blast from it's profile.

For the price of nearly 2x Ravagers... nah... it will always stay on the shelf. It LOOKS great though. It would be fun to paint.

It would be FUN in narrative gameplay and crusades and Flyers and Aircraft are really cool in our Massive scale games. But for tournament play? Forget about it!

Thank you for reading!
