It is quite possible that, in addition to popular tales, it was precisely these same sculptures and the terrifying stories they depict that also decisively influenced that metaphorical psyche-tecture of the fantastic, whose seduction shaped a part of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer's mind during that period of his life when illness clouded the objective vision of the stuffy journalist for La Época he had been until then.
Regardless of other no less mysterious and suggestive environments, which also contributed to introducing the code of the supernatural into the algorithmic psychitecture of his mind, the ancient tragedies, engraved, perhaps, by anonymous Amalfi sculptors serving the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem on the monumental capitals of this old Soria monastery, located between two mythological landmarks: the Duero River as it flows through Soria and the awe-inspiring Mount of the Souls, were the spark that lit that powder keg, which, protected by the superficial disguise of legend, transformed into feverish creativity, at a time in his life when, unlike the Italian poet Dante Alighieri, he had not yet even reached the halfway point.
Resulta muy posible, que, además de los relatos populares, fueran, precisamente, estas mismas esculturas y las terribles historias que representan, las que influyeran también, de una manera determinante, en esa metafórica psiquitectura de lo fantástico, cuya seducción moldeó una parte de la mente de Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer en aquel periodo de su vida en el que la enfermedad nubló la visión objetiva del estirado periodista de La Época, que había sido hasta entonces.
Independientemente de otros entornos no menos misteriosos y sugestivos, que también contribuyeron a introducir el código de lo sobrenatural en la algorítmica psiquitectura de su mente, las viejas tragedias, grabadas, quizás, por anónimos escultores amalfitanos servidores de la Orden del Hospital de San Juan de Jerusalén en los monumentales capiteles de este viejo monasterio soriano, situado entre dos hitos mitológicos, como son el río Duero a su paso por Soria y el sobrecogedor Monte de las Ánimas, fueron la chispa que encendieron ese barril de pólvora, que, amparado en el superficial disfraz de la leyenda, se transformó en febril creatividad, en un momento de su vida, que, a diferencia del poeta italiano, Dante Alighieri, todavía no había llegado siquiera a la mitad.
