The latest trend from the end of 2024 til now is about matcha, which like spread like a virus. Almost every month I learn more about matcha, including recipes, new matcha varieties, and cafes. That's how much I know about matcha, even more than coffee. However, this matcha experience was different, because it was very special.
My friend and I met because it felt like we hadn't seen each other in a long time. It's a friendship separated by islands and also by marital duties. She finally returned to her parents' home, and it was a golden opportunity for us to meet.
She brought a child with her, who had given birth in 2024, who was truly handsome and cute. We decided to meet in a quiet place, a cafe, avoiding crowds, as bringing a baby would be risky if exposed to many people.
I've actually known about this restaurant, Yamaoka Tea, for a long time. It was the first matcha paradise in Medan. It was my first time visiting, and I discovered the distinct vibe of a Japanese cafe. Of course, as the name suggests, they sell Japanese tea, especially matcha.
I ordered one dessert, which was the main reason I came here. This is also the reason I chose Yamaoka Tea. The matcha cheesecake was incredibly delicious, buttery, and with a distinctly salty cheese flavor, perfectly complementing other cheesecakes. The best part was the matcha, which had a slightly nutty, bitter taste. It was simply the best!
Then, I ordered a special menu item: a matcha latte from Yame Hoshino, from Fukuoka, which boasts the highest grade. It turns out there are many different types of matcha, depending on the cultivar and other factors. Of course, this was a ceremonial grade, because I really like matcha, even though this was my first experience using ceremonial grade. I immediately fell in love.
I really enjoyed the tasting profile from Yame Hoshino because I love anything aromatic, especially with its strong smoky flavor. My favorite part was the nuttiness, which was stronger from the matcha than the milk, which complemented it perfectly.
Truly, this was my first matcha cheesecake and ceremonial matcha experience that I will always remember. I will be back to enjoy other types of matcha. They truly are specialists in this area, truly professional.
