Hello, how are you? When I was still doing commissions, I used to make my cats as a reference because I had to show a sample of the painting I was doing. It was an intrusive decision of mine, and I am so proud of it because I improved my watercolor painting skills by about 100%.
So my number one model is my cat Tatang. He is a chill cat, so it is easy to take a photo of him when I need a model for my painting, and he is kind of perfect, too. So, for today's watercolor pet portrait, I am going to show you how I used to do all my pet portraits.

Let's Paint!

For the line art, I make sure to draw him as close to the middle as possible. I start blocking it using the shape first, and then I layer that blocking shape with line art. So I make sure to draw the line art as carefully because erasing too much or too hard will ruin the paper. Before I start painting, I am going to roll the line art with a kneadable eraser to prevent the painting from being muddy.
-----

I am going to start with light paint, more water, and less paint. And I suggest u to use a calligraphy brush to paint because using a calligraphy brush is more gentle with the paper. Let it dry completely. This is the most important thing to do when doing watercolor. If you're impatient, use a hot blower that makes everything easier.
-----

When the first layer is completely dry, layer it with darker shades of color. Please mind where you put the paint, make sure to only paint the part where the darker part and make sure not to paint where the highlights are.
----

After that, I am going to use a fine liner pigment pen. Make sure to use a pigment pen because it is waterproof, and make sure to use a thin size tip so that you can draw it a thin as possible.
-----

Then I erase those pencil lines and start layering the painting again.
-----

For this part, I am starting to add more opaque and vibrant color to the paint, which means less water, more paint. Some part of Tatang's face is pinkish, so I added it so I make it look cooler, and for his white fur, I use a blue shade on it. For the eyes in the reference, his eyes are completely dilated. I like it so much.
-----

I added more intense value and opacity to the painting by adding darker shades of his fur, and then I added more layers of fine line pigment pen on it to finish it off.
----

Then I use this white pen to draw the eyebrows and whiskers, and some parts of the painting that need highlights.
-----

And finish it with a blue background, I like to add a simple background to make the focus on the subject, and maybe in the future I might add something more to the background.

Photoshoot Time! The line art took me so much time, but it is worth it. :D
