Today we won't go too far to tell a photography story, because this encounter with a cute young opossum (Didelphis marsupialis) happened in my backyard in broad daylight in the middle of the afternoon... When I saw it from our kitchen door, this charming marsupial was eating small guavas from one of the several guava trees growing in our yard. So I had time to go to my bedroom, put a zoom lens on my camera, and come back to take some pictures of this charming creature...
Hoy no iremos demasiado lejos para contar una historia de fotografía, porque este encuentro con un simpático ejemplar joven de zarigüeya (Didelphis marsupialis) ocurrió en mi patio trasero a plena luz del sol en mitad de la tarde... Cuando lo ve desde la puerta de nuestra cocina, este encantador marsupial se encontraba comiendo pequeñas guayabas en uno de los varios árboles de esa fruta que crecen en nuestro patio. Así que tuve tiempo de ir a mi habitación, poner un lente zoom en mi cámara y regresar para hacerle fotos a esta adorable criatura...
They generally wander about in search of food at night and are a species that has adapted very well to the more urban environment of the town center. However, young specimens like this one can be seen with some regularity in gardens and yards during the day. Years ago, they were persecuted due to numerous "dark legends" about them, which said they were aggressive and transmitted rabies. But the truth is that these animals are completely harmless and very friendly. This one in my photo shoot, for example, instead of fleeing when it saw me approaching the tree where it was eating fruit, decided to descend the branches to observe me from a height just a little higher than my head. When they are young, they are very curious, and this makes them susceptible to attack by dogs and even by some unscrupulous people or those who still believe the false things previously said about these animals. Fortunately, with the widespread availability of information on social media, most people now know about the benefits this species offers us humans. They often eat spiders, cockroaches, and other vermin, and they even attack snakes, to whose venom they are also immune. They are so harmless that, when they are in danger and cannot escape, they resort to playing dead in the hope of discouraging their attackers.
Generalmente salen a deambular buscando comida durante las noches y son una especie que se adaptado muy bien al entorno más urbano del casco central del pueblo. Pero ejemplares jóvenes como este se pueden ver con cierta regularidad en los jardines y patios durante las horas del día. Años atrás eran perseguido debido a un montón de "leyendas negras" acerca de ellos, en donde se decían que eran agresivos y transmitían la rabia. Pero la verdad es que estos animales son totalmente inofensivos y muy amigables. Este de mi sesión de fotos por ejemplo, en lugar de huir cuando me vio acercarme al árbol donde se encontraba comiendo frutas, decidió descender por las ramas para observarme desde una altura apenas un poco mayor a la de mi cabeza. Cuando están en su juventud son muy curiosos y eso los hace susceptible de ser atacados por perros e incluso por algunas personas inescrupulosas o que aún creen en las cosas falsas que se decían antes sobre estos animales. Afortunadamente, con la masificación de la información en las redes sociales, ahora la mayoría sabe de las bondades que presenta esta especie para nosotros los humanos. Ellos suelen comer arañas, cucarachas y otras alimañas, e incluso atacan serpientes a cuyo veneno por cierto también son inmunes. Son tan inofensivos que, cuando están en peligro y no pueden huir, recurren hacerse los muertos con la esperanza de desmotivar a sus atacantes.
I spent half an hour photographing this opossum up close, during all this time he (he's a male as I could see when he finally turned to leave 😄) just looked at me with curiosity and if I moved a little, he did too so he could continue watching me. But after a while he seemed to lose interest in me, climbed back up to the top of the guava tree, ate some more of the fruit and suddenly came out onto the rusty tin roof of my old warehouse, where he walked around slowly and carefree, happy and satisfied for having eaten a lot I suppose... This was a lovely encounter!
Estuve media hora fotografiando de cerca a esta zarigüeya, durante todo ese tiempo él (es un ejemplar macho según pude ver cuando finalmente se giró para irse 😄) solo me miraba con curiosidad y si yo me movía un poco, él también lo hacía para poder seguir observándome. Pero al cabo de un rato pareció perder interés en mi, subió de nuevo a lo más alto de árbol de guayabas, comió algunas de esas frutas más y repentinamente saló al oxidado techo de laminas oxidadas de mi viejo depósito, por ahí de fue caminando lento y despreocupado, feliz y satisfecho por haber comido mucho supongo... ¡Esto fue un encuentro encantador!...

ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL NOTE: Photographs captured with my Nikon D7000 DSLR camera in RAW format, then processed in Adobe Camera RAW for adjustments regarding light, sharpening, contrast and depth... They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape v3.7
NOTA TÉCNICA ADICIONAL: Fotografias capturadas con mi cámara DSLR Nikon D7000 en formato RAW, procesadas posteriormente en Adobe Camera RAW para ajustes relativos a luz, afilado, contraste y profundidad... Luego fueron exportadas a formato JGP sobre el cual se llevaron a cabo modificaciones menores como enderezado y agregado de marcas de agua usando PhotoScape v3.7
