This week was quite busy, but I still managed to visit the garden time by time, and once again realized how much I truly love gardens and plants 😁
Micro Balcony Update
I love all the plants, but this week’s highlight is the chili peppers. My beloved bonsai chili suddenly started turning red, and it made me realize that harvest time is just around the corner. It looks like we’ll get quite a lot this year, so I might be able to dry them through autumn and won’t need to buy small chili peppers until next summer ☺️
The colorful chili called Lila Luzi is producing lots of fruit. I bought the seeds because of its fun name and colors, but I still need to check whether it’s edible—and if so, how to eat it.
I’d like to overwinter both chili plants and grow them into tree-like forms. Aside from the chili, I’m also happy to see my Japanese maple coming back. When I was away for two weeks in June and asked my family to water it, the soil dried out and the plant also looked dried out ... But now I see new buds and leaves, and since the leaves have grown to certain size, I think it will be fine. On the balcony, I also have yuzu, sanshō, shiso, myōga, and other Japanese plants, and I added the maple this spring.
The strawberry runners I placed in pots have grown into nice young plants, so I’m planning to transplant them to the garden soon 🍓 By the way, the balcony harvest count is currently at 45 strawberries.
The “Klein” but Big Garden
The garden is in full harvest season, and there’s always something to bring home. My friend, who rents the neighboring plot, is away on vacation, so I’ve been watering her plants too—and gratefully receiving some of the ripe vegetables as well.
One day after work I stopped by the garden, and @pupiko came there for the first time. I managed to take a photo that looks like it could be from an old children’s TV program.
While watering, I couldn’t help laughing when I found my daughter’s mini wheat field. The seedlings were lined up in neat rows, which looked too intentional to have come up naturally. Then I remembered: my daughter had planted wheat grains she collected with her grandmother in exactly that spot. I couldn’t help but think, “Ah, she's my daughter.” I’m not sure how far it will grow since it was sown at this time of year, but I’ll take good care of it.
To-Do for Next Week
In all the busyness, I haven’t managed to clean the little shed in the garden yet. Hopefully on a cooler day I can bring a vacuum cleaner and get that done. Other than that… I’ll just keep enjoying the harvest and also enjoy cooking with it. After several days above 30°C, it looks like next week will settle into more pleasant days around 25°C 🙌

今週は、あれこれ忙しかったのですが、合間でちょこちょこ庭を見に行って、やっぱり庭や植物が大好きなんだなあと改めて実感しました。
マイクロバルコニーの様子
どの植物もみんな大好きなのですが、今週のハイライトは唐辛子です。大好きな盆栽チリが突然赤く色づき始めて、もう直ぐ収穫なんだなあと感慨深くなります。今年はかなり採れそうなので、秋口にかけて乾燥させていって、来年の夏まで小さい唐辛子は買わなくていいかも・・・！なんて☺️
Lila Luziという楽しい名前のカラフルな唐辛子の実がたくさんついています。名前と色に惹かれて種を購入しましたが、食べられるのかな、食べられるとしたらどうやって食べるんだろう・・・。あとで調べます。
どちらの唐辛子も越冬させて木のように育てたいです。唐辛子の他には、紅葉が復活してうれしいです。6月に2週間家を空けていた時に、家族に水やりをお願いしていたら、からからに乾いてしまっていたのですが、最近新芽が見えて、葉が出てきて、ここまで歯が大きくなったら大丈夫でしょう。バルコニーには柚子や山椒、紫蘇、茗荷など、日本由来の植物もちらほらあって、春に紅葉を追加したのでした。
いちごのランナーの下にポットを置いて育てた苗がいい感じなので、近々庭に移植しに行こうと思っています 🍓 いちごは毎年元気で無限に苗ができそうです。そうそう、バルコニーでの収穫は現在45個。
"Klein"だけれど大きい庭の様子
庭は収穫の最盛期でいつも何かしら持って帰れます。隣の区画を借りている友人は休暇中ということで、水やりを引き受けて、収穫どきの野菜もありがたくいただいてきています。
仕事の帰りに庭に寄った日があって、@pupiko が初めて庭に遊びに来ました。昔の子供番組のような写真が撮れました。
水やりをしながら笑ってしまったのですが、子供がまいた小麦が芽を出していました。一直線に並んでいて、自然に生えてきたにしては不自然で、確かこのあたりに子供がおばあちゃんと集めてきた小麦の粒を植えていたのです。ああ、私の子供だなとなんともおかしくなりました。この時期に種をまいてどこまで育つかわかりませんが、大事に育ててみようと思います。
来週のTODO
ドタバタの中、庭についている小屋の掃除をできていないので、涼しそうな日に掃除機を持って庭に行けたらいいなと考えています。そのほかは・・・収穫を楽しみつつ、料理でまた楽しみつつといったところでしょうか。30度越えの日々を乗り越えて、来週からは25度前後の過ごしやすい日々が続きそうです。
