Fridge on extension cord crop May 2025.jpg

Friday morning it was REALLY cold in the house so when I got up at 6AM, I went and plugged the heater in, in the bathroom. Not being fully alert, I forgot you can only plug in 1 thing at a time in there. Of course, the circuit breaker tripped.

After many trips to the cellar, I never did succeed in getting the breaker on. So I plugged the heater into the hall outlet and heated the bathroom that way. It wasn’t until noon I realized that no electricity in the bathroom = no electricity in the clean room which has a fridge… Hence the extension cord.

Checking foliar formulas crop May 2025.jpg

Back around 2010 I went to a soil seminar and they gave a recipe for foliar feeding. I copied it as best as I could and have used it all these years. But I had a feeling it wasn’t quite right as I wasn’t really getting the results I should.

So when my helper friend (who took chemistry in school) arrived at 8AM, we sat down to figure out exactly what the dilutions were and whether we had the correct amounts of things.

It turns out we were pretty far off in amounts to be used. My big concern was excess nitrogen, but there was a very low concentration of that. My concern for this year is boron due to the heavy rains. They will have leached out any boron I put down. So we added that and corrected the formula.

He left at noon and at 12:30PM my #2 intern showed up to clean out haylofts. As you can see there wasn’t much and we were done by 1:15PM. So I asked her if she’d help get the cages off the Little Trees II and all the protectors off.

So we got the cages off and she squeezed them up into the loft of the new wood shed. They all just fit.

When I went to get photos of the trees without cages, I discovered there were a few little peaches on the peach tree, but there was a LOT of curled leaf disease. So much rain and cold must be what it likes. I will have to cut away all the bad stuff.

But I had lots of choke berries and a few Juneberries. I didn’t find any plums.

The grapes are growing well and REALLY need strings to follow to the trellises. It’s just been too cold and raining to get these things done.

We moved over to the Little Trees and while she took off the protectors, I did some weeding.

Tom’s going to check on Sunday to see if his dad had tobacco netting. If not, the next time he goes to see his mom, I’ll have him pick up some from this farm:

There’s Juneberries in this row and cherries, so far. And there will be elderberries too. The tobacco netting won’t protect from whatever got the peaches last year. I have to figure out something else for them.

She left about 2:30PM and I’d just sat down to a movie with my 2 quilts when the contractor arrived at 3PM.

He had made me 6 tomato stakes and finished the Tonka garage door.

It took quite an effort and a trip to the barn for tools to get the hardware off the old door. It went easily onto the new door and it was soon hung. It had started to drizzle a couple hours into the project.

He looked at the circuit breaker for the bathroom and thinks it might have failed. My electrician is apparently away for the holiday weekend. So the contractor said he’d find a breaker and replace it.

When I got back inside I was really cold so I broke down and lit a fire in the clean wood stove. Sigh… I couldn’t hold out any longer as the cold is due to last until Tuesday.

On Saturday my #1 intern is taking me to do errands. The house is getting much warmer with the stove going, so I think I will read or watch videos and basking in the heat. It’s to rain off and on, with occasional sun. But still cold…
