Week 12 of the Hive Garden Question
This Week's Question:
If you could add any feature to your garden—be it a water fountain, a greenhouse, or a hammock—what would it be and why?

Fairy in the New Herb garden June 2021

I have 2 features I’d like to talk about. The first has already been added.

On this day, June 14, in 2011, my husband came home with my fairy. It was far more than we could afford at the time but he knew I’d adore it. I put her in a safe corner of the V garden between the walkways.

A couple years later she moved to the center of that garden and she stayed there until the construction of 2019 forced a move. The V garden was disappearing forever.

So she moved to the New Herb garden in the east end of Row 2 and has been there ever since.

She would go out to the garden at the end of May when all frost was done and the Row 2 had been planted and come in during October ahead of the first autumn frost. She had a table in the living room in an out of the way place.

She was knocked off the table several years ago and her long leg broke. It was repaired well and she has been fine until February of this year. Larry, my cat, decided he had to try to get on a shelf where there was no room for him and knocked the fairy over in the process. She shattered. Both feet were damaged.

So my interns and I have slowly been reconstructing her and we finished just when they left for vacation. I tend to put her out in the New Herb garden when I have finished working on Row 2 for planting. That hasn’t happened yet. She also needs a new stump as hers has rotted down too far and she touches the ground.

This fairy is very precious to me because of the love my husband showed when he brought her home. He knew how much I loved fairies and gardens and it was the perfect gift showing his love.

The second (necessitating a 4th photo) is a dream greenhouse. When my husband made plans for his 3rd rod shop, he said he’d build me a greenhouse. But he never finished the rod shop as he died while building the addition. So I still don’t have a greenhouse.

But if I had the funds, this is the house or one similar that I’d like. A solid foundation, a rocket stove that ran along the sides to heat in winter, and venting in the roof.

It would house delicate plants year round and have benches for my seedling starting in the spring. But in reality, I can’t see this structure fitting into the ambience of the farm. I’ll be lucky if I can get a polycarbonate structure. That would be more in line with the farm.

But with no one to build it, it remains a dream…
