LUT Garden Report #6

In my last garden report I mentioned I was getting an some work done to the back corner of my garden. It gets little sun and was turning into a dead zone. Now I've added a gravel path around it and made it usable again. Snowpea loves running around here. 1000013770.jpg

I've placed pots of plants on one side. The rosemary, lavender on the left I just bought this week to start a herb garden. The next two plants were from last year. They haven't died yet, I think I'm not a massive plant killer as I thought I was. 1000015847.jpg

My sister gave me the pansy, on the right. She has loads of stuff in her garden, saving me quite a lot of money to buy plants. Basically I've taken anything she has excess from her garden. 1000015856.jpg I have planted some nerine in the corner. This is from my other sister, saving me more pennies. Nerine are from South Africa and are like lilies. My sister has had hers for many years and they grow pretty pink flowers in winter adding a nice dash of colour to the garden when everything else is dead.

The leaves were still very floppy two weeks after I planted them, and my sister suggested I cut it back and let it regrow. Hopefully they will 🤞 1000013771.jpg

Next, is more of my herb garden. The mint came from my brother in law's garden. I love growing mint as they're so easy to grow, zero maintenance and helps to keep pests away. Plus I can use them to make drinks and salad, perfect for the summer. 1000015845.jpg

On the other side I have added a mini greenhouse. I mentioned I would get one last week in my procrastination post. Putting it out on the chain really helps. If you have any jobs that you've put off for a long time, you should try writing about it, you'll get it done! 1000015848.jpg

I've only had my mini green house for a few days and I'm already seeing a big difference to my plants.

My brother in law propagated a fig plant and gifted it to me. Since I moved it into the greenhouse the shoots are clearly growing. I'm going to wait for it to grow bigger and stronger before I pot it outside. The left tray on the top right photo is Chinese cabbage. Last month I sowed some seeds outdoors but none germinated. This time I kept the seedlings indoors for a couple of days and when I moved them to the greenhouse they started to germinate the next day!! They're only 5 days old but so far so good. The tray next to it is green salads, they're a week old today and supposedly very easy to grow. They look a little leggy as they sat on my window sill for a couple days before I got the greenhouse. Hopefully they will grow better now. They other tomato plants are also from my sister. She gave me some on last month and I made a mistake of planting them in my raised bed immediately. All but one got eaten by the slugs. I'm going wait for them to grow bigger before I replant them this time.

These are green peppers seedlings, I planted them after I bought a green pepper for dinner a few weeks ago. They were sat outdoors for a few weeks and I was a bit surprised they germinated. Hopefully they will grow better in a warmer environment. 1000015854.jpg

My sister sowed a lot of bok choi seedling about two months ago and gave me two trays. Of course most things die when they get to me. These are considered old and I was going to throw them away, then I thought I'd try to challenge nature and see if they will grow if I resow them and keep them in the greenhouse. I guess we'll find out in my next LUT Garden Report. 1000015852.jpg

Last and not the least, two more plants. The supermarket bought basil is the latest addition to my herb garden. I plan to propogate it in a few weeks time to increase my crop. And finally the cuttings on the right are goji berries from my sister's garden. They've become a super health food in recent years, but the Chinese have been using it as a dried cooking ingredient for years. These will grow into bushes (if they grow), I'll decide where to plant them in the future. 1000015855.jpg

At the moment I have nothing growing in my garden apart from one surviving tomato plant and my wolf berry plants, but the latter seems like it may have some disease. It's such a waste of growing space. Need to find some hardy things to grow that won't be nibbled by slugs. Any suggestions? Thanks and have a great weekend. 1000015862.jpg
