A couple of months ago, I moved my neglected planter to a sunnier spot and wow, what a difference!
It’s now completely overgrown with a lovely mix of plants, each doing their own thing.
Let’s take a peek at what’s going on in there:
Tomatoes are flowering beautifully, fruits won’t be far behind!
The courgette is thriving, full of bright blossoms and baby fruits starting to swell.
Runner beans have started to climb and are covered in flowers, can’t wait for the pods!
In the corner, I’ve got horseradish. It can get big if left alone, but I like keeping it in this spot where I can dig into the roots easily, great for making horseradish sauce to go with roast dinners!
The garlic was turning yellow so I pulled one out and theres a garlic bulb in there!
And I’ve somehow grown the tallest spring onions in town!
They're chunky and bigger than my fingers!
and also flowering, and I’ve harvested from them several times already.
Parsley and coriander are still going strong. I use them daily, and they just keep coming back, bushy and fragrant.
Sadly, the broad beans didn’t do well; a particularly hot, sunny day seemed to dry up all the flowers and I hope it will produce more flowers.
I’ve also planted turmeric roots, but they haven’t sprouted yet. Fingers crossed.
One corner with bushy and fruiting wild strawberries.
We’ve had a good dose of sunshine this summer, with a few showers here and there, not enough to soak the planter, but just enough to keep things ticking.
Today, I gave the whole planter a tidy:
I watered deeply first, so the plants could take a good drink before any cutting, which helps reduce water stress.
Trimmed back about a third of the leaves, including the old, yellowing ones, to improve airflow and encourage more flowers and fruits.
And removed any weeds that were competing for space.
I collected a decent pile of greens to add to the compost.
And that’s it, everything’s nicely trimmed, they all can get sunshine, fresher with air and ready to flourish.
Then I sat beside these wild strawberries and ate them.
Hoping to see lots of assorted fruits in the next couple of weeks! 🍆🌼🌿
Have a lovely day.
