A Surprise to Remember: Mama’s 70th Birthday Celebration

Happy Tuesday Hivers! ## A year ago, my mom told my older sister that she wanted to celebrate her birthday this year since she would be turning 70. She also mentioned that she wished to be surrounded by her friends and siblings on her special day. When my sister came home last May, we held an advance celebration for her, so my mom assumed that would be it—no more parties in August, her actual birth month. What she didn’t know was that our youngest siblings were secretly coming home to prepare a big surprise celebration. ##  ## On her birthday, all she knew was that we were going out for dinner at a restaurant near town. She had no idea that a grand party was waiting in the evening. No one in the family acted busy that day—we were all just at home, relaxing and catching up since it’s rare for us to be together. She also didn’t know that my sister and her husband, who both work in Australia, had flown home just for the celebration. By 4 PM, we told her to get dressed, and my sister even did her makeup. She kept complaining, asking why she needed makeup just for dinner, but my sister simply said, “So you’ll look beautiful, Mama. ##  ## On the way to the venue, we tricked her by saying we had to stop by to pick up some desserts, so she wouldn’t get suspicious about where we were headed. When we arrived at the hotel, she looked puzzled and asked why we were there. I told her it was just for a quick photo shoot, and she didn’t mind. But when she got out of the car, she started noticing familiar faces around and we couldn’t stop laughing. The moment we opened the door, the whole room burst into a chorus of Happy Birthday. She was completely surprised—and little did she know, there was still another surprise waiting. ##  ## She was then seated at the special chair prepared for her. Once everyone settled down, the program officially began. After the opening prayer, we sang Happy Birthday again. Just then, my sister and her husband appeared at the door carrying a cake. The moment my mom saw them, she was speechless and tears just started flowing. ##  ##  ##  ##  ## Since my mom never experienced the traditional 18 Roses dance during her debut years ago, my sister included it as part of the program. She was able to dance with her sons, her brother, nephews, friends, and even her grandchildren. ##  ##  ## After the big surprise, everyone enjoyed the meal since the food was already prepared. When dinner was over, there were games joined by the guests. They all had fun, especially because small prizes were given away. ##  ## ##  ##  ## By around 10 o’clock, the party was wrapping up. While the catering staff was cleaning up, my younger sibling and some of his friend—who also served as the emcees of the party—decided to dance together. Back in their high school days, they were really good dancers, and even now, despite having bigger tummies, they still showed off their moves and danced so well. ##  ## It was truly a night filled with love, laughter, and happy tears—a 70th birthday celebration she’ll never forget. ##
