Farewell to Lobatón Market / Despedida del Mercado Lobatón [Eng-Esp]

Hello dear Black and White community,

Yesterday I walked through the streets that have been part of my life for the past two months. With my camera in hand, I reached the famous Mercado Lobatón a place full of Lima’s culture, lively and exotic, but also one where you always need to stay alert, since “friends of the unwanted” are often around.

I knew these would be my last photos here for a while, so I walked calmly, observing every detail. After getting off the bus and walking a few blocks, I turned right and everything changed. The tall office buildings and the big avenue behind disappeared, giving way to another world.

At first, when I began my classes, I was very afraid to take out my camera. I didn’t feel it was safe. Over time I found my own strategy: backpack in front, and whenever my eye caught something, I instinctively pulled out the camera and shot.

In this series I show some peculiar details of Lobatón:

• The man with a box head, carrying a popular beer crate, the same ones that are stacked into towers during patron saint festivities.
• The food stalls, selling hamburgers in bread and emolientes, a classic Peruvian warm drink made with medicinal herbs.
• The street vendors, kids on wheels, and all the everyday life that gives this place its identity.

In these streets I not only learned studio photography, but also discovered night street photography. I learned to lose fear, to trust my instrument, to become one with the camera, and to freeze people in their daily lives.

I doubt I’ll walk through Lobatón again anytime soon, but I know I’ll return one day. And I also know new streets will come, where I’ll keep developing as a street photographer.

So, I leave you with what might be my last series from Mercado Lobatón. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed living it. Sending you my best vibes and thanks to everyone who stops to read my stories.

Hola querida comunidad en Blanco y Negro,

Ayer caminé por las calles que han sido parte de mi vida los últimos dos meses. Con la cámara en mano, llegué al famoso Mercado Lobatón* un lugar lleno de cultura limeña, alegre y exótico, pero también un sitio donde siempre hay que estar alerta, porque nunca falta “el amigo de lo ajeno”. *

Sabía que estas serían mis últimas fotos aquí por un tiempo, así que caminé con calma, observando cada detalle. Al bajar del bus, después de unas cuadras, doblé a la derecha y todo cambió. Los altos edificios de oficinas y la gran avenida detrás quedaron lejos, dando paso a otro mundo.

Al inicio, cuando comencé mis clases, me daba mucho miedo sacar la cámara. No sentía que fuera un lugar seguro. Con el tiempo encontré mi estrategia: mochila adelante, y cuando mi ojo veía algo, instintivamente sacaba la cámara y disparaba.

En esta serie muestro algunos detalles peculiares de Lobatón:

• El hombre con la cabeza de caja, cargando una de cerveza muy popular, de esas que se apilan en torres durante las fiestas patronales.
• Los quioscos de comida, donde venden panes con hamburguesa y emolientes, esa bebida clásica del Perú para el frío, hecha con plantas medicinales.
• Los vendedores ambulantes, chicos sobre ruedas, y toda la vida cotidiana que da identidad a este lugar.

En estas calles no solo aprendí fotografía de estudio, también descubrí la fotografía callejera nocturnaaprendí a perder el miedo, a confiar en mi instrumento, a ser uno con la cámara y congelar a las personas en su día a día.

Dudo que vuelva a caminar pronto por Lobatón, pero sé que regresaré algún día. También sé que vendrán nuevas calles donde seguiré desarrollándome como fotógrafo callejero.
