Lima, the City of Kings / Lima ciudad de Reyes [Eng-Esp]

Hello dear Black and White community,

Lately, I’ve been drawn to photographing people in the streets, capturing moments of everyday life.
This afternoon, I crossed paths with many elderly people and decided to build a visual story based on the different situations they were in.

Every time I go to therapy not every day, but when I do. I pass by the Banco de la Nación, the place where most elders collect their pensions.
That’s where I see them: some lost in their thoughts, others still sharp. Some with vacant looks, others pretending to be unwell just to skip the line.

There are also grandparents raising their grandkids not just grandparents, but parents all over again.
Some are doing the shopping, some walking slowly, others just resting for a bit.
And some still working, even though they’ve already given so much to life.

I never met my grandfather. He passed away when I was a child. I never had the chance to experience that bond.
Maybe that’s why I’m so drawn to them now because in their faces, I see stories. I see struggle, resilience, abandonment, and dignity.

Through these photographs, I tried to capture those moments that often go unnoticed.
To document what Lima reveals when you take the time to truly look.

Because sometimes, in this city, all you need to do is pause for a second… and you’ll see life unfolding right in front of you.

Hola querida comunidad en Blanco y Negro

Lima, ciudad de los reyes

Últimamente se me ha dado por retratar personas en la calle, en su vida cotidiana.
Hoy, por la tarde, me crucé con muchos adultos mayores y decidí armar esta narrativa, observando las distintas situaciones en las que se encontraban.

Cada vez que voy a terapia no siempre, pero cuando voy paso por el Banco de la Nación, ese lugar donde tantos abuelos hacen fila para cobrar su pensión.
Ahí los veo: algunos dispersos, otros lúcidos. Algunos con la mirada perdida. Otros más despiertos, haciendo como que están mal para saltarse la fila.

Entre esas escenas también están los abuelos que crían a sus nietos. Los que ya no solo son abuelos, sino también padres otra vez.
Están los que cargan bolsas del mercado. Los que caminan lento. Los que se sientan un rato a descansar.
Y también están los que todavía trabajan, aunque ya hayan dado todo en esta vida.

Yo no conocí a mi abuelo. Murió cuando yo era muy niño. Nunca tuve esa experiencia.
Quizá por eso me detengo tanto en ellos. Porque en sus rostros veo historia, esfuerzo, abandono, dignidad.

A través de estas fotos intenté capturar esos momentos que a veces pasan desapercibidos.
Registrar lo que Lima revela, si uno se toma el tiempo de mirar.

Porque a veces, en esta ciudad, basta con detenerse un segundo para ver la vida pasar.
