My latest photo session was with a dermatologist, a woman who helps others feel confident in their own skin. She’s naturally beautiful, with curly hair that frames her face perfectly. When she showed up for the session, I was a little surprised to see she had straightened it. While the look was elegant, I couldn’t help but think about how her natural curls would have beautifully complemented her essence and the profession of celebrating natural beauty.

I've always believed that the most compelling photos are those that capture a person's authentic self. For me, a woman's natural hair is a powerful element of her identity. I had envisioned a series of portraits where her beautiful, curly hair would be a key part of the composition, symbolizing her connection to nature and a genuine, unadorned beauty. Even though the photos turned out great, I felt like we missed an opportunity to showcase her in a more raw and honest light.

Ultimately, the goal of any photo session is to create images that make the client happy. She loved the photos and felt confident, which is what matters most. But this experience served as a great reminder for me as a photographer to always encourage people to embrace their natural state. There's a unique power in capturing people exactly as they are, and it’s a form of beauty that truly never goes out of style.
