The old road that connects Montalbán with other neighboring towns isn't exactly my favorite place to wander when I want to take photos. However, a foggy morning always promises interesting scenes, even on that road. So one recent morning, I decided to walk a couple of kilometers along that route and take these photographs, which I'm sharing with you today...
La vieja carretera que comunica Montalbán con otros pueblos vecinos, no es precisamente mi lugar favorito para deambular cuando quiero hacer fotos. Sin embargo, una mañana con niebla es siempre una promesa segura de escenas interesantes, incluso en esa carretera. Así que una mañana reciente decidí recorrer un tramo de un par de kilómetros de esa vía y hacer estas fotografías que hoy traigo para compartir aquí con ustedes...
In the 1980s, most of the land along this route was pastureland, farms, and a few cottages. However, in the 1990s, the town began to expand, and it did so precisely in this direction. Thus, much of the land used for agriculture and animal husbandry was gradually converted into urbanized space...
En los años ochenta del siglo pasado, la mayoría de los terrenos a los lado de esta ruta eran pastizales, granjas y algunas casas de campo. Sin embargo, en la década de los noventa el pueblo comenzó a expandirse y lo hizo precisamente en esta dirección. Así fue como buena parte de las tierras dedicadas a la agricultura y cría de animales, fue gradualmente convirtiéndose en espacio urbanizado...
But then, with the arrival of the new century and the economic, social, and political crisis, Montalbán's growth simply "stopped," and these areas became what I like to call "the aborted town." I say this because the small urban development projects came to a complete standstill, much of the land that had been sold to construction companies ended up vacant, and even the new streets were left unpaved and, over time, fell prey to the return of vegetation. And to make matters worse, much of the agricultural activity that existed there also disappeared...
Pero entonces, con la llegada del nuevo siglo y de la crisis económica, social y política, el crecimiento de Montalbán simplemente "se detuvo" y estas áreas se convirtieron en algo que a mi me gusta llamar "el pueblo abortado". Y digo esto porque los pequeños proyectos urbanísticos se paralizaron en su totalidad, muchas de las tierras que habían sido vendidas a empresas constructoras terminaron baldías e incluso las nuevas calles quedaron sin asfaltar y con el tiempo fueron presa del retorno de la vegetación. Y parta colmo de males, buena parte de la actividad de agropecuaria que existía allí, también desapareció...
The existence of many new half-built houses without services like water or electricity led to their illegal occupation (invaded) by people from other towns or cities, forming neighborhoods with characteristics very different from what we were used to and previously seen here in Montalbán, even being considered "dangerous zones." Fortunately, with the population exodus since 2014, these areas became largely depopulated, and the social problems there have been more or less manageable. But ultimately, this ended up becoming a moderately urban area, with few people, a few bus stops where people gather to go to work in other towns in the mornings...
La existencia de muchas nuevas casas construidas a medias pero sin servicios como agua o electricidad, propició el que fuesen habitadas (invadidas) ilegalmente por personas de otros pueblos o ciudades, formando barrios cuyas características distaban de lo acostumbrado y visto antes aquí en Montalbán, llegando incluso a ser considerados "zonas peligrosas". Afortunadamente, con el éxodo de población sufrido desde el año 2014, estos lugares quedaron bastante despoblado y el problema social en ellos ha sido más o menos manejable. Pero en fin, esto terminó por convertirse en un área medianamente urbana, con pocas personas, unas cuantas paradas de autobús en donde se les ve reunirse para ir a trabajar a otros pueblos en las mañanas...

ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL NOTE: Photographs captured with my Nikon D7000 DSLR camera in RAW format, then processed in Adobe Camera RAW for adjustments regarding light, sharpening, contrast and depth... They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape v3.7
NOTA TÉCNICA ADICIONAL: Fotografias capturadas con mi cámara DSLR Nikon D7000 en formato RAW, procesadas posteriormente en Adobe Camera RAW para ajustes relativos a luz, afilado, contraste y profundidad... Luego fueron exportadas a formato JGP sobre el cual se llevaron a cabo modificaciones menores como enderezado y agregado de marcas de agua usando PhotoScape v3.7
