Not even paradise is exempt from the damage we humans do to the planet. Here, in the wonderful *Lake Atitlán*, the rains wash ashore a lot of garbage from the mountains and the waves, too, bring with them the traces of our recklessness. Since arriving in *San Marcos*, the awesome @buttcoins has taken us on walks in the surrounding area, hiking as a group and enjoying the beautiful scenery of the villages around the lake. But during these walks, we always came across traces of garbage. Our host told us that this is not only a problem associated with tourism, but also with the lack of social awareness in the locality. We all know that this problem affects us globally, so it is not surprising to come across it here, but honestly it is a pity, when you look down from the dreamy landscape and find plastic packaging and carelessly thrown away cigarette butts. It's just a shame.

> Ni siquiera el paraíso está exento del daño que los humanos le hacemos al planeta. Aquí, en el maravilloso *Lago Atitlán*, las lluvias arrastran hasta su orilla un montón de basura desde las montañas y las olas, también, traen consigo los vestigios de nuestra imprudencia. Desde que llegué a *San Marcos*, el grandioso @buttcoins nos ha llevado a pasear por los alrededores, haciendo senderismo en grupo y disfrutando de los bonitos paisajes de los pueblos alrededor del lago. Pero durante estos recorridos, nos encontramos siempre con rastros de basura.
Nuestro anfitrión nos contó que no es un problema únicamente asociado al turismo, sino también a la falta de conciencia social en la localidad. Todos sabemos que este problema nos afecta a nivel global, por lo que no es de extrañar conseguirse con ello aquí, pero sinceramente da mucha lástima, cuando bajas la mirada del paisaje de ensueño y te encuentras con empaques de plástico y comillas de cigarro tiras con descuido. Da mucha pena.

In one of our last excursions to a beautiful waterfall, we found a trash garbage can in the middle of the jungle, almost hidden by the vegetation but with the intention of reminding hikers that trash has its place. That time I wore my *Clean Planet* cap and decided to take a picture of that trash basket, thinking about the importance of the projects that are dedicated to the care of the environment, that's when @ecoinstante and I started talking about @cleanplanet. She shared with us her deep interest in the project and how nice it would be to organize a trash collection day around the lake, together with the locals. Her enthusiasm led her to talk to some of the new #Hive members who have joined the ecosystem thanks to the work we are doing at [Hive Hub Guate](https://peakd.com/c/hive-132463/created) and organize a first trash collection day to clean up the @atibeachclub lakefront, which is part of our base of operations. She talked to those interested, prepared the event advertisement and made the announcement through the community WhatsApp channels, which is where people at the lake find out about upcoming activities and events.

> En una de nuestras últimas excursiones a una hermosa cascada, nos encontramos con una papelera en medio de la selva, casi oculta por la vegetación pero con toda la intención de recordar a los excursionistas que la basura tiene su lugar. Esa vez cargaba mi gorra de *Clean Planet* y decidí hacerle una foto a esa canasta de basura, pensando en la importancia de los proyectos que se dedican al cuidado del medioambiente, fue entonces cuando @ecoinstante y yo nos pusimos a conversar sobre @cleanplanet. Ella nos trasladó su profundo interés en el proyecto y lo bonito que sería organizar una jornada de recolección de basura en los alrededores del lago, junto a los habitantes de la zona.
Su entusiasmo la llevó a hablar con algunos de los nuevos miembros de #Hive que se han integrado al ecosistema gracias al trabajo que estamos haciendo en [Hive Hub Guate](https://peakd.com/c/hive-132463/created) y organizar una primera jornada de recolección de basura para limpiar el frente del lago de @atibeachclub, que es parte de nuestra base de operaciones.
Habló con los interesados, preparo el anuncio de l actividad e hizo el llamado por medio de los canales comunitarios de WhatsApp, que es por donde la gente en el lago se entera de las actividades y eventos.

Seeing our colleagues interested and committed to the organization of this meetup filled me with joy, it only takes good vibes and the desire to do good to bring together the right people and spend some time helping to save a little bit of our little piece of the planet.
I prepared myself with all the enthusiasm I could to join the event, although I must admit that I was very tired that afternoon and I just wanted to take a nap hahaha but as I had my @cleanplanet t-shirt and cap that I had won in the past [Graz challenge](https://peakd.com/hive-148309/@buzzparty/hive-creator-days-or-graz-eb40d11748026), last May, I decided to stand out again the place of good *cleaner* that I had so hard to win that time.
Once prepared with my attire, I stopped by the kitchen to ask the hotel's restaurant team to give me some gloves that would allow us to collect the debris we found on the beach without having to get too dirty. It was there when @kevinleo, the bartender in charge of the bar, nagged me, telling me something very true and that made me feel so guilty. He asked me, respectfully but very seriously, if it made sense for me to use plastic gloves to pick up trash, since this would generate even more waste.
He was absolutely right and almost made me give up on the idea, I ended up using them but being very conscious of it and thinking of possible alternatives for next time. Sorry, but still learning.

> Ver a nuestros compañeros interesados y comprometidos en la organización de este encuentro me llenó de alegría, no hacen falta más que las buenas vibras y las ganas de hacer el bien para juntar a las personas indicadas y pasar un rato ayudando a salvar un poquito nuestro pedacito de planeta. Yo me preparé con todo el entusiasmo que pude para unirme a la jornada, aunque debo admitir que esa tarde estaba muy cansada y sólo tenía ganas de echarme una siesta jajaja pero como tenia a la mano mi camiseta y gorra de @cleanplanet que había ganado en el pasado [reto de Graz](https://peakd.com/hive-148309/@buzzparty/hive-creator-days-or-graz-eb40d11748026), el pasado mes de mayo, me propuse a dejar en alto nuevamente el lugar de buen *cleaner* que tanto me costó ganar aquella vez.
Una vez preparada con mi atuendo, me pasé por la cocina para pedirle al equipo del restaurante del hotel que me regalara algunos guantes que nos permitieran recolectar los desechos que encontráramos en la playa sin tener que ensuciarnos demasiado. Fue allí cuando @kevinleo, el bartender encargado del bar, me llamó la atención, diciéndome algo muy cierto y que me hizo sentir muy culpable. Me preguntó, con respeto pero muy serio, si me parecía lógico emplear guantes de plástico para ir a recoger basura, siendo que esto generaría aún más desechos.
Tenía toda la razón y casi me hizo desistir de la idea, termine utilizándolos pero siendo muy conscientes de ello y pensando en posibles alternativas para una próxima vez. Lo siento, pero seguimos aprendiendo.
When I approached the meeting point, the activity had already started and there were about 8 people helping to collect the garbage they saw near the pier. However, not all of them continued with the activity, but the other six committed, took the task very seriously and did not stop collecting all the garbage they found until the sacks we had began to scatter
At first glance, honestly, the *beach* does not look dirty, it seems that the edge of the lake was safe from the carelessness of passersby, but when you start to detail thoroughly you can realize that between the stones, any amount of garbage is trapped very easily.
It is possible that the majestic views offered by the lake and the delicious climate of this place, easily distract us and we decide to ignore part of the reality, enjoying the magic. But as we focused on accomplishing the cleanup mission, we began to unearth, literally, a lot of debris that was trying to go unnoticed.

> Cuando me acerqué al punto de encuentro, la actividad ya había comenzado y estaban unas 8 personas ayudando a recolectar los desechos que veían cerca del muelle. Sin embargo no todos continuaron con la actividad, pero los otros seis comprometidos, se tomaron muy en serio la tarea y no dejaron de recolectar toda la basura que se encontraban hasta que los sacos que teníamos comenzaron a desparramarse. A simple vista, sinceramente, la *playa* no se ve sucia, parece que el borde del lago estuviese a salvo del descuido de los transeúntes, pero cuando comienzas a detallar minuciosamente te puedes percatar de que entre las piedras, queda atrapada cualquier cantidad de basura muy fácilmente.
Es posible que las majestuosas vistas que nos ofrece el lago y el deliciosos clima de este lugar, nos distraiga fácilmente y decidamos obviar parte de la realidad, disfrutando de lo mágico. Pero al estar enfocados en cumplir la misión de limpieza, comenzamos a desenterrar, literalmente, muchos desechos que intentaban pasar desapercibidos.

As I looked at my partners, I saw them with large bottles and huge plastic bags that were easily in sight, this made our garbage bags begin to fill up very quickly, then I decided to start looking at the smaller debris, those who sought to scurry under the rocks or escape back into the water dragged by the waves.
By looking at these small artifacts, I recognized that there was much more than meets the eye. At first it was easy to spot many items because of the unnaturally bright colors of the plastic, lighter fragments, candy packaging and bottle caps that were everywhere.
As I was looking at the details, I noticed the large amount of polystyrene among the rocks, the white cork used to make thermal cups for coffee, food containers or coolers/boxes. When I realized what those white specks of cork camouflaged among the rocks were, I felt that this day of collecting would never end. It seems that people in the area enjoy shattering coffee cups after using them.

> Al fijarme en mis compañeros, los veía con grandes botellas y enormes bolsas de plástico que estaban fácilmente a la vista, esto hizo que nuestros sacos de basura comenzaran a llenarse muy rápido, entonces yo decidí comenzar a fijarme en los desechos más pequeños, esos que buscaban escabullirse debajo de las rocas o escapar de nuevo al agua arrastrados por las olas. Fijándome en esos pequeños artefactos, reconocí que había mucho más de lo que parecía a simple vista. Al principio resultaba fácil detectar muchos elementos por los llamativos colores antinaturales del plástico, fragmentos de encendedores, empaques de dulces y tapas de botellas que había por doquier.
Ir fijándome en los detalles me hizo dar cuenta de la gran cantidad de poliestireno que hay entre las rocas, es el corcho blanco utilizado para elaborar vasos térmicos para llevar café, comida o neveras/cavas. Cuando me di cuenta de lo que eran ese montón de motitas blancas que se camuflaban entre las rocas, sentí que esa jornada de recolección no acabaría nunca. Parece que la gente por la zona disfruta haciendo añicos los vasos de café luego de usarlos.

The things that were most abundant hidden among the rocks were plastic bags, cigarette butts and lots and lots of clear disposable plastic cups. These seemed to reproduce under the rocks, when I moved one of them I almost always found a glass trapped under it, probably from take away drinks that people buy to enjoy admiring the lake and also some ice creams apparently. The problem is that they throw them there, I don't know what is the point of admiring the landscape if you then do things that can destroy it.
Other curious elements that I found were several rusty wires, which are surely very dangerous for the animals that live around the lake, in the area there are many stray dogs, birds and fish. I also took out some tobacco packages in the water, which were hard to see, and some broken plastic glasses.
While I was on my miniature debris hunt, the rest of the team had already accumulated a lot of bulky garbage in the three bags we had to collect the trash and the intense sun was stealing our energies. It was then that I realized that I had not taken photos of those involved in action and wanted to capture some of their work.

> Las cosas que más abundaban escondidas entre las rocas eran bolsas plásticas, comillas de tabaco y muchísimos vasos plásticos desechables transparentes. Estos parecían reproducirse debajo de las rocas, cuando movía alguna casi siempre encontraba un vaso atrapado bajo ella, seguramente de bebidas para llevar que la gente compra para disfrutar admirando el lago y también de algunos helados por lo visto. El problema es que luego los tiran allí, no se de que sirve admirar el paisaje si luego haces cosas que pueden llegar a destruirlo. Otros elementos curiosos que encontré fueron varios alambres oxidados, que seguramente son muy peligrosos para los animales que hacen vida alrededor del lago, en la zona hay muchos perros callejeros, aves y peces. También saque algunos empaques de tabaco dentro del agua, que difícilmente se veían y unos lentes de plástico rotos.
Mientras andaba en mi cacería de desechos miniatura, el resto del equipo ya había acumulado mucha basura voluminosa en los tres sacos que teníamos para recolectar los desechos y el intenso sol nos robaba las energías. Fue entonces que me di cuenta que no había hecho fotos de los involucrados en acción y quise captar un poco del trabajo de los demás.
|| ---|---|---  # The team: ## Matt @starkerz & Camille I don't know if anyone has ever seen an ecosystem *whale* so committed to these kinds of small activities in real life, but certainly @starkerz has shown me that the commitment and desire to achieve the improvements our ecosystem needs is demonstrated in person, step by step and by persisting. His fun sense of humor, positive frame of mind and ability to communicate to others the importance of this activity, made it a lot of fun to walk under the sun picking up trash hahahaha. Also in this photo is Camille, a lovely French lady who has been living in *San Marcos*, the little town we are in, for a few months now, and who found out about the activity from the publicity. Camille is not a hive member, but she showed us her enthusiasm to keep taking part in this initiative, to learn more about the objectives of the project and to support us as much as possible. She also expressed her gratitude for organizing the activity, something that certainly makes us feel very happy.

> No sé si alguna vez alguien ha visto a una *ballena* del ecosistema tan comprometida en este tipo de pequeñas actividades en la vida real, pero sin duda @starkerz me ha demostrado que el compromiso y las ganas de alcanzar las mejoras que necesita nuestro ecosistema se demuestran en persona, paso a paso y persistiendo. Su divertido sentido del humor, positivo estado de ánimo y facilidad para comunicarle a los interesados la importancia de esta actividad, hizo que resultara ser muy divertido andar debajo del sol recogiendo basura jajajaja.
En esta foto también se encuentra Camille, una encantadora francesa que lleva algunos meses viviendo en *San Marcos*, el pueblito en el que estamos, y que se enteró de la actividad por la publicidad. Camille no es usuaria de Hive, pero nos mostró su entusiasmo en seguir participando en esta iniciativa, conocer más sobre los objetivos del proyecto y apoyarnos en lo posible. También nos transmitió su agradecimiento por organizar la actividad, algo que sin duda nos hace sentir muy contentos.
