Homemade Steak & Mushroom Bake – Inspired by Greggs

I was walking about today and could smell a nice pastie. I followed the smell, and a Greggs bakery was around the corner. I decided to pop in and was looking forward to a nice steak bake, but the counter was empty.

Instead, I went to the supermarket and bought some ingredients. I planned to copy the Greggs steak bake, which has tender beef and thick, rich gravy.

I added mushrooms for extra richness to fit in with @fungifriday by @ewkaw.

Greggs is a British bakery chain that mainly sells savoury and sweet baked goods. You should try it when you visit the UK.

So here's how I made it...

🍄 Steak & Mushroom Bake

Ingredients (makes 2 large or 4 small bakes):

🍄 For the filling:

250g diced beef steak (rump or chuck), cut small

100g mushrooms, finely chopped (button, chestnut, or portobello work well)

1 small onion, finely chopped

1 tbsp potato flour or cassava flour ( I used cassava)

½ tsp onion powder

½ tsp garlic powder

1 tbsp tomato purée

1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

300 ml rich beef stock

Salt and pepper, to taste

1 tsp oil or beef dripping

🍄For the pastry:

Pre-made or 1 sheet pre-rolled puff pastry

1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions:

🍄 Prepare the Filling:

Heat oil or dripping in a pan. Brown the beef in batches; remove and set aside.

Pressure cook to soften (optional);

Add the stocks and beef in a pressure cooker and cook for 20 minutes, or simply boil until tender.

In the same pan, cook the onion until soft.

Add mushrooms and cook until their moisture evaporates and they begin to brown.

Stir in garlic powder, onion powder, and flour

Return beef to the pan, including the stock. Stir well.

Mix in tomato purée and Worcestershire sauce.

Simmer until the gravy is thick, and add salt and pepper.

Cool completely before using.

🍄 Assemble the Bakes:

Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F).

Cut pastry into rectangles.

Spoon the cooled filling onto half of them, leaving a 1cm border.

Top with the remaining pastry.

Seal edges with a fork.

Score the top.

Brush with egg wash.

Add mushroom slices on top

🍄 Bake:

Bake for 20–25 minutes on gas mark 6

or until golden, crisp, and puffed.

Let it cool a little.

I served it with salad, herbs from the garden, and chips.

This bake was so flaky and filled with tender beef and mushrooms, crisp and golden!

So satisfying!
