I currently live in Andalusia, southern Spain, in a small beach town called La Herradura. I come from Caracas, Venezuela, a country in South America where there are no seasons, the climate varies little throughout the year, and the weather remains pleasant. This is my first summer; I had never lived in a country with seasons before.
On the other hand, I work independently and don't have children, so I'm not one of those people who save up all year and eagerly await summer to take a break from their routine and travel with their family. For me, traveling or taking a few days off from my routine is a choice I can make when I organize it. Last year, for example, I traveled in the fall, when it's quieter and cheaper to travel.

This summer, my first summer, I am at home, organizing work projects that I will start after the summer. One of the first things I learned about summer in Spain is that, unless you work in tourism, any project you want to start has to be postponed until after the summer. For Spaniards, and I think for Europeans in general, summer is sacred, as is resting and taking a siesta after lunch. Summer is for vacationing, traveling, and going to the beach. La Herradura, where I live, is a tourist destination, the atmosphere of the town changes completely as soon as summer begins. It is normally a quiet town, with few tourists, especially at the weekend, and most of its inhabitants are over 50 years old. You see some children and young people too, mainly when they leave school. If you go to the beach during the week, there are few people there. You can swim in peace. But when summer arrives...

At the beginning of summer, the beaches of Spain's southern coast celebrate the night of San Juan, a pagan festival that was incorporated into Christian celebrations at some point. This year, I participated in the celebration for the first time with a group of friends from the La Herradura Reading Club. It was a very beautiful ceremony. A bonfire is lit, we dance around it, symbolically throwing all that is bad into it and invoking the arrival of all that is good. Some children told stories and some guys at the club prepared queimada, a traditional Galician drink made with pomace brandy, sugar, lemon or orange peel, and coffee beans, which is burned during its preparation. It is known for the ritual that accompanies it, where a spell is recited to ward off evil spirits and attract good luck.

In La Herradura, one of the most important festivals is celebrated in the summer, the festival dedicated to the Virgin of Carmen, the patron saint of the town. This year I participated in the festival as a member of the Rociero choir. We first participated in the mass in her honor and then accompanied her singing to the beach, where it is traditional for the Virgin to embark and travel around the bay to protect the inhabitants of the town and especially the fishermen. The event ends around midnight, when the Virgin returns to the shore and there are fireworks. A very beautiful event.

Normalmente es un pueblo tranquilo, con pocos turistas, sobre todo los fines de semana, y la mayoría de sus habitantes tienen más de 50 años. También se ven algunos niños y jóvenes, sobre todo cuando salen del colegio. Si va a la playa entre semana, hay poca gente. Se puede nadar tranquilamente. Pero cuando llega el verano...

Ahora vamos después de las 18:00, y sigue habiendo mucha gente en la playa, pero menos que por la mañana o a primera hora de la tarde. No hay donde aparcar en toda la costa.
Por otro lado, el cambio de clima es importante, y hay que tomar precauciones, como beber más agua o líquidos y no exponerse demasiado al sol, ya que se podría sufrir una insolación. Hay más horas de sol. Esto me sorprendió mucho porque es mi primer verano. A las 9:00 o 9:30 de la noche, el sol sigue brillando. Así que tenemos que cuidarnos. En La Herradura se celebra en verano una de las fiestas más importantes, la dedicada a la Virgen del Carmen, patrona del pueblo. Este año he participado en la fiesta como miembro del coro Rociero. Primero participamos en la misa en su honor y luego la acompañamos cantando hasta la playa, donde es tradicional que la Virgen embarque y recorra la bahía para proteger a los habitantes del pueblo y especialmente a los pescadores. El acto termina hacia medianoche, cuando la Virgen regresa a la orilla y hay fuegos artificiales. Un acontecimiento muy hermoso.
