Hello, dear friends of the Wednesday Walk!
Today I want to share with you a trip I took after work. I'm accompanying my husband to the municipality of East Havana to return an ID card that one of his coworkers had forgotten. Knowing the destination was on the other side of the city, I jumped at the chance: this trip offers one of the walks I enjoy most in Havana.
We strolled along the seafront. The sea peeks timidly between buildings and sidewalks, but what truly captivates me is the parade of architectural and historical beauties that line the route.

Acompañé a mi esposo hasta el municipio Habana del Este para entregar una identificación olvidada por uno de sus compañeros. Al saber que el destino estaba al otro lado de la ciudad, me animé sin pensarlo: ese trayecto me regala uno de los paseos que más disfruto en La Habana.*
*Tomamos por el malecón. El mar se asoma tímidamente entre edificios y aceras, pero lo que realmente me cautiva es el desfile de bellezas arquitectónicas e históricas que bordean la ruta.*

The first thing I notice is the majestic Hotel Nacional, with its fountain adorning the corner of 23rd Street and the Malecón, revealing the rocks over which the water glides. Next comes Maceo Park, with its imposing monument to the Bronze Titan, which always draws our attention. In the background, the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital, a symbol of Cuban medicine, looms large.

Later, we reach La Punta, where history seems to sprout from the pavement. From there, you can see the Lighthouse and the Castle of the Three Kings of Morro, eternal icons of our Havana. Although, as soon as we walk along the seawall, it's always visible.

But what excites me most is crossing the Bay Tunnel, one of the seven wonders of Cuban civil engineering. This project, which connects Paseo del Prado with the eastern part of the city, stretches 733 meters and reaches a depth of 12 meters underground. Before its existence, the trip to the East involved skirting the bay on more than 20 kilometers of a narrow road. Today, in just 45 seconds, you cross that threshold that seems to separate two worlds.

Before plunging into the darkness of the tunnel, we are surrounded by iconic landmarks that can be seen as we follow the path along the avenue leading to its entrance. The one that most attracts me is the monument to Máximo Gómez, a sculpture that I admire for its symbolic power. To the left, opposite, is the Casa de la Música, vibrant even from the outside. Also visible are the Spanish Embassy and Parque 13 de Marzo, with the Museum of the Revolution in the background, still under repair but full of memories.
*Antes de sumergirnos en la oscuridad del túnel, nos rodean puntos emblemáticos que se visualizan al seguir el camino por la avenida que conduce a su entrada. El que más me atrae es el monumento a Máximo Gómez, una escultura que admiro por su fuerza simbólica. A la izquierda, en un punto opuesto, está la Casa de la Música, vibrante incluso desde fuera. También se observa la Embajada de España y el Parque 13 de Marzo, con el Museo de la Revolución al fondo, aún en reparación pero lleno de memoria*.

As we entered the tunnel, everything went silent. There was no signal, no coverage. Only the sound of the engine and the certainty that, on the other side, another Havana awaited us. As we exited, we were greeted by the old checkpoint, which remains today as a testament to times gone by, when crossing the tunnel meant paying for entry.
*Al entrar en el túnel, todo se silencia. No hay señal, no hay cobertura. Solo el sonido del motor y la certeza de que, al otro lado, nos espera otra Habana. Al salir, nos recibe el antiguo control de vías, que hoy permanece como testigo de tiempos pasados, cuando cruzar el túnel implicaba pagar por el acceso.*
