While recently walking through the surrounding forests, I stumbled upon something extraordinary – a Jewish cemetery from the 16th century. I'd heard many times that there was such a cemetery somewhere in these woods, but I'd never been there before. I'd never sought it out either. It was no different this time. I walked, enjoying the closeness of nature and pondering various mundane matters. I walked on, aimlessly. I often do that. I walked until, at some point, with no particular destination, I decided it was time to return and turned around. This time, my carefree wandering led me to this place. I was very surprised when I encountered the first graves. I didn't know what they were, as they were destroyed by the ravages of time, and most of them lacked information boards. It was only when I looked at one of them that I saw a Star of David, remembered the stories about the Jewish cemetery hidden somewhere in the middle of the forest, and connected the dots. Today, this cemetery resembles more of a ruined cemetery. It looks like a forgotten place. Some of the tombstones are impossible to reach at all because of the vegetation that is in the way.
Spacerując ostatnio po okolicznych lasach, natknąłem się na coś niezwykłego - cmentarz żydowski z XVI wieku. Nieraz słyszałem, że gdzieś w tych lasach jest taki cmentarz, nigdy jednak wcześniej na nim nie byłem. Nigdy też go nie szukałem. Podobnie było tym razem. Chodziłem, ciesząc się bliskością przyrody i rozmyślając o różnych przyziemnych kwestiach. Szedłem przed siebie, bez celu. Często tak robię. Idę aż w pewnym momencie, żadnym konkretnym, stwierdzam, że pora wracać i zawracam. Tym razem moje beztroskie wędrowanie zawiodło mnie do tego miejsca. Byłem bardzo zaskoczony, kiedy napotkałem pierwsze groby. Nie wiedziałem co to w ogóle jest, ponieważ są zniszczone przez ząb czasu i większość z nich nie posiada tablic informacyjnych. Dopiero oglądając któraś z kolei zobaczyłem gwiazde Dawida, przypomniałem sobie opowieści i ukrytym gdzieś w środku lasu cmentarzu żydowskim i połączyłem kropki w jedną całość. Obecnie ten cmentarz przypomina raczej ruiny po cmentarzu. Wygląda na zapomniane miejsce. Do niektórych nagrobków nie da się w ogóle dostać, ponieważ przeszkadza w tym porastająca roślinność.
After returning home, I did some internet research and found some information about this place. The Jewish cemetery in Wieliczka was founded in the 16th century, or more precisely, in the first half. Its boundaries were formally established in the 18th century. It was surrounded by a stone wall. The last burial at the cemetery took place in 1942. During World War II, the Germans likely devastated the cemetery, murdering and burying approximately 1,000 Jews in a mass grave, where a monument commemorating this event was later erected. The cemetery covers an area of approximately 1.8 hectares, and approximately 50 tombstones have survived, mainly made of limestone and sandstone, with characteristic decorations and inscriptions in Hebrew. Over the years, the cemetery fell into increasingly dilapidated condition.
Po powrocie do domu, poszperałem trochę w internecie i znalazłem trochę informacji odnośnie tego miejsca. Cmentarz żydowski w Wieliczce został założony w XVI wieku, a dokładniej w jego pierwszej połowie. Jego granice formalnie ustalono w XVIII wieku. Otoczono go kamiennym murem. Ostatni pochówek na cmentarzu miał miejsce w 1942 roku. W czasie II wojny światowej Niemcy prawdopodobnie zdewastowali cmentarz, zamordowali i pochowali około 1000 Żydów w zbiorowej mogile, na której później wzniesiono pomnik upamiętniający to wydarzenie. Cmentarz zajmuje obszar około 1,8 hektara, a zachowało się na nim około 50 nagrobków, głównie z wapienia i piaskowca, z charakterystycznymi zdobieniami i inskrypcjami w języku hebrajskim. Z biegiem lat kirkut coraz bardziej popada w ruinę.
