Buenos días, buenas tardes o buenas noches, damas y caballeros. ¿Cómo están? ¿Cómo se encuentran el día de hoy? Espero que muy bien, en mi caso particular ya terminé mi tratamiento y espero esta vez sí volver a por todas, escribir sobre todo lo que he estado viendo últimamente, aunque técnicamente no son animes o mangas, creo que encajan perfectamente en esta comunidad debido a que se trata de una adaptación a live action de un popular manga, tengo entendido que próximamente van a sacar una tercera temporada, así que nada mejor que hablar un poco acerca de las dos primeras para refrescar un poquito la memoria. La obra en cuestión es Alice in Borderland, cuya adaptación de mano de Netflix fue un éxito rotundo, haciendo que mucha gente se enganchara a la franquicia, yo siéndoles sincero, no me he leído el manga pero evidentemente con un poco de investigación sé que seguramente cambiaron algunas cosas para la adaptación, es lo que siempre hacen. Es como la vez que volví a intentar ver el live action de Sweet Home pero simplemente no soporté los cambios drásticos en los personajes y en la trama pero supongo que aquellos que no hayan leído el manhwa pueden fácilmente consumir la adaptación sin tener quejas o aborrecimiento con los cambios. En Alice in Borderland no sé qué tan drásticos sean los cambios pero vamos a juzgarla como un producto independiente. Así que sin más dilación, hablemos de Alice in Borderland.
Good morning, good afternoon, or good evening, ladies and gentlemen. How are you? How are you finding yourselves today? I hope very well. In my particular case, I have finished my treatment and I hope this time to truly come back with full force, to write about everything I have been watching lately. Although technically they are not anime or manga, I believe they fit perfectly in this community as they are a live-action adaptation of a popular manga. I understand that a third season will be released soon, so what better than to talk a bit about the first two to refresh our memory a little.
The work in question is Alice in Borderland, whose adaptation by Netflix was a resounding success, leading many people to become hooked on the franchise. To be honest with you, I have not read the manga, but obviously with a bit of research I know they likely changed some things for the adaptation; it's what they always do. It's like the time I tried to watch the Sweet Home live-action again but simply couldn't stand the drastic changes to the characters and the plot. However, I suppose those who haven't read the manhwa can easily consume the adaptation without complaints or abhorrence towards the changes.
In Alice in Borderland, I don't know how drastic the changes are, but let's judge it as a standalone product. So without further ado, let's talk about Alice in Borderland.

La trama nos pone en la piel de Arisu, un chico que es mantenido por su padre y que no hace otra cosa que jugar videojuegos, siendo reprendido por su hermano por su forma de vivir su vida. Un día después de una usual reprimenda por faltar a una entrevista de trabajo, Arisu queda en el cruce de Shibuya de encontrarse con Chota y Karube, sus mejores amigos. Después de causar un accidente de tráfico por cruzar la calle con el semáforo en rojo, huyen de la policía y se esconden en un baño público para que no les encuentren, cuando de repente transcurre un apagón, haciendo que los tres muchachos salgan a investigar para encontrarse con el hecho de que todo Tokio está desolado, siendo ellos los únicos que parecen estar en la ciudad. Una vez que anochece y un edificio parece tener electricidad cuando ninguno de los otros tiene, deciden ir a investigar, donde se encontrarán con su macabra realidad: deberán jugar unos juegos mortales para extender sus días de vida (mediante una visa) en esta extraña realidad paralela en la que se encuentran. La serie tiene una inmensidad de referencias a Alicia en el país de las maravillas, tanto así que los personajes están claramente basados en los personajes de dicha historia, hasta se puede denotar en los nombres, inclusive en algunos doblajes, lo hacen más descarado como cambiándole el nombre de Arisu, el protagonista, a Alice. Aunque esté todo esto, lo vi nada más como referencia, el mensaje de la obra es algo diferente.
The plot puts us in the shoes of Arisu, a young man who is supported by his father and does nothing but play video games, being reprimanded by his brother for his way of living his life. One day, after the usual telling-off for missing a job interview, Arisu is due to meet his best friends, Chota and Karube, at the Shibuya crossing. After causing a traffic accident by crossing the street against a red light, they flee from the police and hide in a public toilet to avoid being found. Suddenly, a blackout occurs, prompting the three lads to go out and investigate, only to discover that all of Tokyo is deserted, and they appear to be the only ones left in the city.
Once night falls and one building seems to have electricity when none of the others do, they decide to go and investigate. There, they will encounter their grim reality: they must play deadly games to extend their days of life (via a visa) in this strange parallel reality in which they find themselves.
The series has a wealth of references to Alice in Wonderland, so much so that the characters are clearly based on those from that story. It can even be seen in the names; even in some dubs, they make it more blatant by changing the name of the protagonist, Arisu, to Alice. Despite all this, I simply saw it as a reference; the message of the work is somewhat different.

La obra tiene una filosofía bastante clara, donde trata de explicarte formas ver la vida, para qué vivir, cuál es el sentido de la vida, siendo un tema muy profundo y que marca constantemente las acciones del protagonista, ya que al ser alguien sin un motivo aparente para vivir, se encuentra en un mundo donde tiene que sobrevivir en todo momento, provocando preguntas si realmente vale la pena luchar por seguir vivo. Conforme va avanzando la obra, vemos al protagonista superando sus traumas y siendo alguien dispuesto a vivir y hacer que los demás también sigan con ese deseo, inclusive queriendo dar su ahora preciada vida por los demás. Obviamente conforme va avanzando la obra, tenemos personajes muy interesantes, cada uno teniendo su propio desarrollo y problemas, quizás hasta en algunos momentos opacando al protagonista. Por ejemplo, he visto en muchos foros que un gran favorito es Chishiya, que es como el típico sociópata intelectual capaz de resolver juegos mentales sin esfuerzo, en mi caso particular lo encontré muy caricaturesco y es que también luce de esa forma, dando a lugar momentos donde camina con las manos en los bolsillos y hasta corre de la misma forma, supongo que para verse cool. Yo sinceramente prefiero personajes un poco más complejos como Kuina, que es un excelente ejemplo de representación trans dentro de una serie. Otro personaje muy llamativo es Niragi, que es lo más detestable que vas a encontrar, aunque de forma contradictoria, quizás en algunos momentos sientas empatía con él por algunos de sus pensamientos.
The work has a fairly clear philosophy, where it tries to explain to you ways of seeing life, what to live for, what the meaning of life is. It is a very profound theme that constantly marks the protagonist's actions, as someone without an apparent reason to live, he finds himself in a world where he has to survive at all times, provoking questions about whether it is really worth fighting to stay alive.
As the work progresses, we see the protagonist overcoming his traumas and becoming someone willing to live and to make others also continue with that desire, even being willing to give his now precious life for others. Obviously, as the work progresses, we are introduced to very interesting characters, each with their own development and problems, perhaps even overshadowing the protagonist at times.
For example, I have seen on many forums that a great favourite is Chishiya, who is like the typical intellectual sociopath capable of solving mental games effortlessly. In my particular case, I found him very cartoonish, and he also looks the part, leading to moments where he walks with his hands in his pockets and even runs in the same way, I suppose to look cool. I sincerely prefer slightly more complex characters like Kuina, who is an excellent example of trans representation within a series. Another very striking character is Niragi, who is the most detestable thing you will find, although contradictorily, you might perhaps feel empathy for him at times due to some of his thoughts.

El único desperfecto, que quizás puede que sea solo cosa mía, es que en algunos momentos la actuación se me hacía insufrible, en las partes donde trataban de ser emotivos, más que todo. Luego tenemos algunos efectos que sinceramente dejan mucho que desear, espero que para la tercera temporada que se viene, los mejoren. Y eso sería todo más que nada, la primera temporada casi es un juego por capítulos, ya luego en la segunda tenemos dos por capítulos algunas veces o juegos que se extienden por más capítulos, algunos de ellos son bastante entretenidos y otros están normales. Vi también que comparan bastante esta serie con el Juego del Calamar, técnicamente la premisa es similar en el tema de los juegos pero lo demás nada que ver, acá todo lo que pasa es más filosófico. En conclusión, una muy buena obra con muy buenos personajes, además el final es bastante inesperado, me imaginé muchas cosas pero nada resultó ser, además la última carta se burla de nosotros como espectadores con las posibles teorías que uno pueda tener, con las dos temporadas que hay, fácilmente se podría dar por culminada la obra, ya que es sencillamente perfecto el final, por lo que queda esperar que no arruinen el final que se le dio a la obra en la tercera temporada.
The only flaw, which perhaps might just be my own opinion, is that at times I found the acting unbearable, particularly in the parts where they tried to be emotional. Then we have some effects that, frankly, leave much to be desired; I hope they improve them for the upcoming third season.
And that would be about it. The first season is almost like a game per episode, then in the second we sometimes have two per episode or games that span multiple episodes. Some of them are quite entertaining and others are just alright. I’ve also seen that people often compare this series to Squid Game. Technically, the premise is similar in terms of the games, but beyond that, they have nothing in common. Here, everything that happens is more philosophical.
In conclusion, it’s a very good work with very good characters. Moreover, the ending is quite unexpected – I imagined many things, but nothing turned out as I thought. Additionally, the final card mocks us as viewers with the possible theories one might have. With the two seasons that exist, the work could easily be considered concluded, as the ending is simply perfect. Therefore, we can only hope that they don’t ruin the ending given to the work in the third season.
