Reindeer Love

I created this digital mixed-media artwork titled “Reindeer Love.” I generated the main reindeer’s image through AI. I think I like it very much. I didn’t need to change his face or body, which is rare for me. I usually have to redraw some parts, but this time I really liked his facial features, so I decided to use the figure as it was.

For the background, I used Japanese traditional-style paper and laid it out in this way. I liked all of them so much that I couldn’t select just one, so I decided to use them all. All the seasons surround him as a gentle background. Then, I placed the main reindeer figure in the middle. I added digital images of a squirrel, butterflies, mushrooms, a flower, acorns, feathers, Japanese maple leaves, and a hummingbird on his antlers and body. I also applied digital processing to enhance the artwork.

I love reindeer very much. In Japanese, they are called “Tonakai (トナカイ),” which comes from “tunakkay” in the Ainu language. There is also a kanji word, “馴鹿,” which literally means “domesticated deer.” I like the word “tunakkay” very much. Reindeer are such pretty, beautiful, spiritual, and friendly animals. They are deeply connected to my ancestors.

I named this artwork “Reindeer Love” because he loves nature and everyone around him, and nature and everything around him love him as well. That’s why I placed many of them on his antlers and body. He lets everyone use his body and naturally depends on nature in return. The magical shining spot is also on his antlers.

I heard that reindeer and deer are known to eat Amanita muscaria. They are not affected by the mushroom’s poison. This fact is connected to the folklore of Siberian indigenous peoples. Reindeer are often described as being fond of eating fly agaric mushrooms, which is sometimes linked to shamanism and winter festivals, and even believed by some to be connected to the image of Santa Claus’s reindeer. That is why I wanted to create this magical-looking image.

Reindeer are so special. I wonder what he can see. Probably, he sees many things.

トナカイの恋

「トナカイの恋」というタイトルのミクストメディア•デジタルアートを作りました。メインとなるトナカイのイメージはAIを通して作りました。うん、このイメージはかなりいいです。顔と体がいい感じですので、いつものように描きかえる必要はありません。なかなか思うようなイメージにならないので、たいていは描き加えたり、消したりしなければならないことが多いです。でも、このトナカイは、特に顔のパーツが気に入ったのでほぼそのまま使うことにしました。

背景は、日本の伝統的なスタイルの紙を使用し、このようにレイアウトしました。どれも好きなので、一枚だけ選ぶことができませんでした。そこで、全部使うことにしました。背景には四季がすべて織り込まれ、真ん中にいるトナカイを優しく包み込んでいます。トナカイの角や体の上にはリス、蝶々、きのこ、花、木の実、羽、もみじの葉っぱ、そしてハチドリのデジタル画像をのせました。そして全体的にデジタル加工を施しました。

わたしはトナカイが大好きです。トナカイの語源はアイヌ語のトゥナカイであると言われています。漢字で書くと馴鹿で、「飼い馴らした鹿」から来ているそうです。トゥナカイという響きがいいですね。トナカイはとてもかわいらしくて、美しく、スピリチュアルでフレンドリーな動物だと思います。彼らはわたしの先祖に大きく関係しています。

「トナカイの恋」というタイトルにしたのは、このトナカイくんが周りのすべてのモノや自然が大好きであるという意味と、トナカイくんを取り囲むすべてのモノや自然が彼のことを大好きであるという意味があります。ですから、たくさんのものを彼の角や体に配置しました。自然界のみんなとトナカイは、お互いに自然に依存しあっているのです、マジカルな光がキラキラと角の上で光っています。

トナカイや鹿は、ベニテングタケを食べると聞いたことがあります。食べても中毒を起こしづらいそうです。実に、シベリアの先住民の伝承では、トナカイがベニテングダケを好んで食べる様子がよく語られていて、シャーマニズムや冬の祭礼（サンタクロースのトナカイのイメージにも関係があるとされる説）と結びつけられることもあるのです。

トナカイはとても特別な存在です。このトナカイくんは何を見つめているのでしょうか。おそらく、あらゆるものが見えているのではないでしょうか。
