Water Lantern
I created this mixed media digital artwork titled Water Lantern. August is such an emotional month in Japan. It is a time of summer family gatherings during the Obon festival season. Obon (お盆) is a Japanese tradition that combines ancient beliefs with Buddhist customs to honour ancestors. August also holds Hiroshima and Nagasaki memorial days, and on the 15th, Japan observes the anniversary of the end of the war.
During Obon, we usually visit the cemetery of our ancestors. I remember going with my mother a few years ago to clean the tombstones, decorate them with flowers, and place offerings of food and drinks. We often share a small picnic there. At that time, we had lunch together, spending time with family while remembering and talking about our ancestors and loved ones who have passed away.
In some traditions, people float water lanterns in the river for the spirits of loved ones. This is called Tourounagashi (灯籠流し), which means “water lantern.” It is a ritual in which paper lanterns are set afloat on rivers or the sea to guide ancestral spirits back to the other world at the end of Obon.
For this artwork, I wanted to create something that feels like an ancient Japanese painting or perhaps a postcard. A large moon rises behind the mountains, fireworks bloom in the sky, and Japanese pine trees line the riverbank. The moonlight reflects on the water, where seven glowing lanterns drift slowly, their candles flickering gently on the surface. I selected a background that resembles traditional Japanese paper, giving it the feel of a classic artwork.
I generated the river, trees, and cliffs with AI, and hand-drew some of the trees, sky, and mountains. I then added stars, fireworks, lanterns, and the moon. Finally, I digitally processed the piece several times until the colours faded softly, carrying a gentle, melancholy beauty.

灯籠流し
灯籠流しというタイトルのミクストメディア・デジタルアートをつくりました。日本の８月はなにかと感傷的になる月なのではないかと思います。お盆の時期には家族などで集まって一緒に過ごされる方も多いと思います。お盆はこちらに戻ってくるご先祖様の霊をお迎えする日本の伝統的な習慣です。合わせて、８月は広島と長崎の記念日もありますし、１５日は終戦記念日もあります。
お盆の間は先祖のお墓を訪れる家庭も多いと思います。数年前に日本を訪れた時に、母と一緒に先祖と亡くなった家族のお墓参りに行きました。お墓をきれいにした後、花を飾って、食べ物や飲み物をお供えしました。我が家はきれいになったお墓の前でミニピクニックをするのが習慣です。その時も、お墓の前でお昼をいただきました。
いくつかの地域では、灯籠流しをするのが習慣の地域もあると思います。お盆に帰ってきた先祖の魂を彼方にお見送りするために、キャンドルを灯した紙状の灯篭を川や海に流します。
このアートは昔の日本画のような、または古いポストカードのような雰囲気を作り出したかったのです。山の後ろには大きな月が見えます。空には花火が上がり、日本ならではの松の木が川辺に並んでいます。月の光が川の上に映ってゆらゆらと反射し、灯りが灯った７つの灯篭が浮かんでいます。絵の背景には同じく昔ながらの日本風の柄を選びました。
川、木と崖をAI で作成し、木と山の一部を描きました。そして、星、花火、灯篭と月の画像を加えました。最終的に何度かデジタル加工を施し、優しく色褪せた風味と感傷的な美しさが出るように仕上げました。
