More than 150 years of history: meet the emblematic Colon Theatre! [ENG | ESP]

Buenos Aires is a city bustling with culture: bookstores, movie theaters, cafes, libraries, museums... on almost every corner there's some kind of opportunity to explore the vast cultural offerings, both local and international. From tango shows to world premieres, you can see a different show every night, but without a doubt one of the most attractive aspects of the Argentine capital is its large number of theaters: more than 300. >Buenos Aires es una ciudad que bulle de cultura: librerías, salas de cine, cafés, bibliotecas, museos... casi en cada esquina de la ciudad hay algún tipo de acercamiento a la gran oferta cultural tanto local como internacional. Desde los shows de tango hasta los estrenos de temporada en el mundo, uno puede ir cada noche a un espectáculo distinto, pero sin duda uno de los aspectos más atractivos de la capital argentina es la gran cantidad de teatros que alberga: más de trescientos. The Gran Rex, the Teatro Nacional Cervantes, the Coliseo, the San Martín, all are internationally renowned venues, but none is as famous or as renowned as the emblematic Teatro Colón, temple of world opera. Although this epicenter of Buenos Aires culture began its activities in 1857, at that time it was located in another place - in Plaza de Mayo - until 1908, when the current building was inaugurated in front of Plaza Vaticano. Surrounded by Libertad, Viamonte, Tucumán and Cerrito streets, this temple of culture has hosted such iconic figures as Enrico Caruso, Arturo Toscanini, Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Luciano Pavarotti, Igor Stravinsky, Mijail Barishnikov, Maria Callas and has had in its billboard and on its stage true jewels: The first theater opened with Giuseppe Verdi's “La Traviata” and the new building opened with another Verdi's work, "Aida", before Giacomo Puccini's “Madama Butterfly” will be presented there for 29 consecutive seasons. And I was there. The first contact I had with this theater was from the outside. I was walking down Liberty Street when the building appeared in front of me in all its imposing beauty. The fact that the building occupies almost an entire block, that there are no tall buildings around it and that the streets that surround it are wide, allows us to appreciate the façade in all its immensity from any angle, which added to the green of the Plaza Lavalle (just across Libertad Street) and the sculptures in the middle of those gardens turn this corner of Buenos Aires into a spectacle for the senses. I was already amazed and I had not even entered the theater. >El Gran Rex, el Teatro Nacional Cervantes, el Coliseo, el San Martín, todos son lugares reconocidos internacionalmente, pero ninguno es tan célebre ni tan famoso como el emblemático Teatro Colón, templo de la ópera mundial. Si bien este epicentro de la cultura bonaerense inició sus actividades en 1857 en ese momento estaba ubicado en otro lugar - en la Plaza de Mayo - hasta que en 1908 se inauguró el edificio actual ubicado frente a la Plaza Vaticano. Cercado por las calles Libertad, Viamonte, Tucumán y Cerrito, este templo de la cultura ha recibido ha figuras tan icónicas como Enrico Caruso, Arturo Toscanini, Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Luciano Pavarotti, Igor Stravinsky, Mijail Barishnikov, Maria Callas y ha tenido en su cartelera y sobre su escenario joyas: El primer teatro se inauguró con "La Traviata" de Giuseppe Verdi y el edificio nuevo se estrenó con otra obra de Verdi, "Aida", antes de que "Madama Butterfly" de Giacomo Puccini se presentará allí durante 29 temporadas consecutivas. Y allí en ese lugar, estuve yo. El primer contacto que tuve con este teatro fue desde su exterior. Venía caminando por la calle libertad cuando el edificio apareció frente a mí en toda su imponente belleza. El hecho de que el edificio ocupe casi una manzana entera, que no tenga edificios altos alrededor y que las calles que lo cercan sean amplias permite apreciar la fachada en toda su inmensidad desde cualquier ángulo, lo que sumado al verde de la Plaza Lavalle (justo enfrente por la calle Libertad) y a las esculturas que hay en medio de esos jardines convierten ese rincón bonaerense en un espectáculo para los sentidos. Ya estaba maravillado y ni siquiera había ingresado al teatro. The ceiling | El techo Entering the legendary Teatro Colón is like entering another time. The enormous curtain, the seating, the ornaments in every corner, the gilding that stands out everywhere, and that beautiful ceiling with the chandelier in the middle. It's true that it has been restored several times, but it still maintains its original style and essence, so when you observe all these details and the magic of the place, you are presented with the same spectacle that those who came to that cultural temple witnessed thirty, fifty, or a hundred years earlier. Witnessing history, being part of it, traveling back in time—it all blends into a set of emotions that are difficult to explain for those who don't know or enjoy these types of places. >Entrar al mítico Teatro Colón es entrar a otro tiempo. El enorme telón, las graderías, los ornamentos en cada esquina, el dorado que resalta por doquier y ese hermoso techo con la lámpara en medio. Es cierto que ha sido restaurado en varias oportunidades, pero aún mantiene el estilo y la esencia original, así que cuando uno observa todos esos detalles y la magia del lugar, se presenta ante el mismo espectáculo que presenciaron quienes acudieron a ese templo cultural treinta, cincuenta o cien años antes. Ser testigo de la historia, ser parte de ella, viajar al pasado, todo se mezcla en un conjunto de emociones difícil de explicar para quienes no conocen o no disfrutan de este tipo de lugares. However, despite all this, in my opinion, it's not the most beautiful theater I've ever seen. It's true that the Teatro Colón is impressive, that it has all that history to its credit and that it's a cathedral of world opera, but although it's well preserved I noticed some details that need to be taken care of or improved. In that sense, the Municipal Theater of Santiago (Chile) is better preserved. Even the smallest detail of ornamentation has been restored and kept in perfect condition and the central chandelier of the Municipal is a work of art itself. The biannual ceremony of cleaning each crystal of that lamp is an event in the city and serves to attest to how proud the people of Santiago are of their Theater. However, it must also be said that the Teatro Colón is larger and has twice the capacity. While the Municipal seats 1,500 people, the Teatro Colón seats 2,500 plus an additional 500 standing. The latter may call your attention, but if you don't understand it, I will explain it to you because when I was there I went to the performance of _La bayadera_ and I saw it standing up. When I decided to buy the ticket, the night before, there were only tickets available in the central area of the most expensive boxes or in some bleachers called _Paraíso_, whose name suggested a very high location, in the last of the eight levels in fact, but witnessing a show of about 100 minutes standing all the time is quite uncomfortable. I don't know if they sell these tickets to give more people a chance to attend or to generate even more revenue, but I think they could do without selling these types of tickets so people aren't standing. >Sin embargo, a pesar de todo ello, en mi opinión, no es el teatro más hermoso que he conocido. Es cierto que el Teatro Colón es impresionante, que tiene toda esa historia a su favor y que es una catedral de la ópera mundial, pero aunque está bien conservado observé algunos detalles que hay que cuidar o mejorar. En ese sentido, el Teatro Municipal de Santiago (Chile) está mejor preservado. Hasta el más mínimo detalle de ornamentación ha sido restaurado y mantenido en perfectas condiciones y la lámpara central del Municipal es una obra de arte en sí misma. La ceremonia semestral de limpieza de cada cristal de esa lámpara es un acontecimiento en la ciudad y sirve para atestiguar lo orgullosos que están los santiaguinos de su Teatro. Ahora bien, también hay que decirlo, el Teatro Colón es más grande y tiene el doble de capacidad. Mientras en el Municipal caben 1.500 personas, en el Teatro Colón entran unas 2.500 más unas 500 adicionales de pie. Esto último puede llamar la atención, pero si no lo entienden, se los voy a explicar porque cuando estuve allí acudí a la función de _La bayadera_ y la vi de pie. Cuando decidí comprar la entrada, la noche anterior, sólo había boletos disponibles en el área central de los palcos más costosos o en unas graderías llamadas _Paraíso_, cuyo nombre sugería una ubicación elevadísima, en el último de los ocho niveles de hecho, pero presenciar un espectáculo de unos 100 minutos estando de pie todo el tiempo es bastante incómodo. No sé si vendan estas entradas para dar más oportunidad a las personas de acudir o para obtener aún más ingresos, pero creo que podría prescindirse de vender este tipo de boletos para que las personas no estén de pie.  |  |  --- | --- | ---
