After our temple trails around Bangkok, our next venture led us to the famous Chao Phraya River. One of the most enticing places to look in the city.

Upon our coming at the riverbank, we were right away welcomed by a friendly attendant. Without any wait, a boat was prepared just for us and the excitement in our hearts began to rise as we stepped aboard. The boatman, who spoke only a little English, kindly introduced himself and his wife, accompanied him on the trip. His warmth and effort made us feel at ease. He handed us lifejackets for safety and after settling in, he started the engine. With a rapid thumbs up, we began our peaceful voyage. Our eyes were instantly pulled to the vast Ferris wheel soaring against the sky which added a touch of charm to the riverside aura. I grasped my phone and took some selfies. The riverbanks were dotted with a towering skyline.
Everywhere I looked, there was something to admire, beautiful temple spires reaching for the sky. We passed under one of the city's bridges. We're talking and laughing at first, but the engine’s sounds plug the air. So we perched into a comfortable silence, letting the air and the flow of the water pull us into the beauty around us.
Swiftly, our boat switched off the main river into a narrower canal. Here, the pace slowed, and the atmosphere became more intimate. The scenery changed. Lining the canal were stunning traditional Thai houses, a golden Buddha standing at the upper level of the building, so maybe it's a place of worship and some architectural open pavilion with intricate carvings. Their charm and authenticity stole my heart. I captured so many photos that still leave me in awe.
In the distance, we saw a big black Buddhist monk situated high up on a building. He portrayed in a seated meditative pose wearing a yellow robe. Its high position gave the impression that he was watching over the area, bringing a peaceful, spiritual presence to the quiet waters of the canal.
As we sailed further, we encountered an elderly man in a tiny boat selling local Thai snacks. My husband asked the boatman to stop so we could try some. Without hesitation, my husband invited the boat couple to have some too. He paid for everything and didn’t even ask for change. Their gratitude touched us deeply. The elderly vendor smiled warmly and bowed and the couple looked sincerely thankful. Making the moment feel genuine and heartfelt.
As we made our way forward, something caught my eye, a small golden shrine or spirit house delicately crafted. Even with its small size, it held a quiet charm. Without thinking twice, I just had to snare that moment, the way it gleams softly in the light, giving a view into the spiritual heart of the place.
As we continued, the majestic sight of three giant Buddha statues came into view, sitting and serene against the sky. The intricate white mural we glimpsed within the temple's main stupa. We were in awe of their size and presence. The combination of these sacred giants and the exquisite artwork created a moment of stillness and awe by the flowing river.
We also passed the noble Royal Thai Navy headquarters, a reminder of the river’s importance over just tourism.
Returning to the main river, the distinct etch of Wat Arun came into view. Standing tall and awesome along the riverbank. The temple’s intricate details were enchanting, each row furnished with colorful porcelain. Even from afar, the temple’s beauty was beyond doubt. A treasure of artistry and fidelity. It was a wonderful sight that was perfectly framed.
Further along, we saw the modern skyline come alive, the Bangkok River Park’s white buildings and the shimmering ICONSIAM mall commanding attention. It felt like a perfect mix of Thailand's spiritual soul and modern sparkle. We made our way back to the docking area. We feel thankful, stunned and heartened. Our Chao Phraya River was a soulful sail through the heart of Thailand. A vigorous richness of art, history and everyday life flows softly on the river’s stream.
