You may be wondering, what's so magical about this place? Well, could it be magical, a place where fragments of a meteorite fell just over six years ago? Or perhaps a nearby skull of a marine dinosaur that inhabited this area millions of years ago was found?
Or perhaps its magic lies simply in the beauty of a place that boasts one of the largest outdoor murals in the world. This mural, which dates back around 60 years, has its own unique characteristics.
I arrived there yesterday after a brief morning stay in the town of Viñales (which I plan to extend to several days so I can visit some of the area's true natural treasures).
Then, with a group of friends, I continued my bus trip to spend the day there. The mural is relatively close, just four kilometers from town, and can be reached by bicycle, motorcycle, taxi, or bus (like us).
The place is easily accessible; it's located at the edge of town, on the road that connects the municipality's main town with other towns like Puerta Esperanza and even another municipality, like Minas de Matahambre. The address? West of the town of Viñales.
The historian of the town of Viñales tells us that the mural was painted with paintbrushes... yes, paintbrushes! Furthermore, the artists were local guajiros (country folk), suspended from the top of the mogote (mountain) in skydiving chairs and guided by a painter positioned hundreds of meters away from the ground. O quizá puede que su magia este simplemente en la belleza de un lugar que posee uno de los murales al aire libre mas grandes del mundo. Este mural, que data de alrededor de 60 años tiene sus particularidades.
Allí llegue ayer, tras una breve estancia mañanera en el pueblo de V_iñ_ales (que pretendo se extienda a varios días para poder visitar algunos lugares de la zona que constituyen verdaderos tesoros naturales).
Luego junto a un grupo de amigos continué viaje en ómnibus para pasar el día en ese lugar. El mural esta relativamente cerca, tan solo a cuatro kilómetros del pueblo y a el se puede acudir en bicicleta, en moto, en taxi o en bus (como nosotros).
El lugar es bien accesible, se encuentra a la salida del pueblo, en la carretera que conecta al poblado principal del municipio con otros poblados como Puerta Esperanza e incluso otro municipio, como Minas de Matahambre. La dirección?: al Oeste del Poblado de Viñales.
Cuenta el historiador del pueblo de Viñales que: el mural fue pintado con pinceles… ¡si, pinceles! Ademas que los artistas fueron guajiros de la zona, colgados desde la cima del mogote (montaña) en sillas de paracaidismo y que eran guiados por un pintor que estaba colocado desde el suelo a cientos de metros de distancia, cuyos instrumentos artísticos fueron un megáfono,unos binoculares y una sombrilla para protegerse del sol.

Volviendo al tema de meteorito que cayo el 1 de febrero de 2019 y que estremeció no sólo al poblado de Viñales, sino a casi toda la provincia de Pinar del Río, se cuenta que los pobladores de la zona que encontraron fragmentos de esa roca literalmente caída del cielo, encontraron precios bien jugosos entre los turistas que acudían allí, atraídos por la mística del lugar. Este lugar es realmente mágico (como todo Viñales).
Visitarlo es como entrar en contacto con la vasta inmensidad de nuestro planeta y pararse en la base del mogote, justamente en la base de la pared en la que se alza el mural… no tiene precio.
Pero como todo lugar resulta mas hermoso aun según la compañía en que se visite, admirarlo junto a un grupo de amigos, disfrutar la charla del historiador Ricardo, disfrutar de un fría Piña Colada, y hasta correr descalzo por el pasto verde, puede resultar una experiencia excepcional.
