I think one of the things that characterises my personality is that I like to finish the things I start. I don't like incomplete or abandoned projects and that's why I always try to invest my time in the things I like to do. But when it comes to trekking, the mountain is always the one that ends up deciding if it is possible to continue moving forward or not, and I respect that beyond my wishes. When I visited Ushuaia for the first time, one of the many treks I had done had been left incomplete, but luckily,
I had the revenge to be able to complete it at last in safer conditions ❤️.
Creo que una de las cosas que caracteriza mi personalidad es que me gusta terminar las cosas que empiezo. No me gustan los proyectos incompletos o abandonados y por eso siempre trato de invertir mi tiempo en las cosas que me gusta hacer. Pero cuando se trata de trekking, siempre la montaña es la que termina decidiendo si se puede seguir avanzando o no, y eso lo respeto más allá de mis deseos. Cuando visité Ushuaia por primera vez, uno de las tantas caminatas que había hecho me había quedado incompleta, pero por suerte, tuve la revancha para poder completarla al fin en condiciones más seguras ❤️.

If your trekking level is a little more advanced and you feel you are ready for something a little more challenging, going to the Ojo del Albino Glacier is a good option. This glacier is one that lies just above and behind the famous
Laguna Esmeralda, Ushuaia's most popular tourist attraction. This hike is marked as being of high difficulty, so it is advisable to go with a specialised guide, even more so in the snowy season. But as it was summer and the whole trail was clear, some Couchsurfing guys and I organised to go on our own.
Si tu nivel de trekking está un poco más avanzando y sentís que estás listo para algo un poco más desafiante, ir hasta el Glaciar Ojo del Albino es una buena opción. Este glaciar es uno que se encuentra justo arriba y detrás de la famosa Laguna Esmeralda, el punto natural más turístico de Ushuaia. Esta caminata está marcada como de dificultad alta, por lo que lo recomendable es ir con un guía especializado, más aún en épocas de nieve. Pero como era verano y todo el sendero estaba despejado, unos chicos de Couchsurfing y yo organizamos para ir por nuestra cuenta propia.

I had
already attempted this trail in December 2023, at a time when there was still a lot of snow on the road. On that occasion, it was this that prevented me and my companion from continuing on, as neither of us had the right footwear. Although we managed to climb quite high and had a good view of the lagoon from there, we could not see the glacier. But this time, at the end of January 2025, there was no more snow and the path was more passable, so I knew we would manage to complete the trail.
Yo ya había intentado hacer este sendero en Diciembre 2023, en un momento en el que todavía había bastante nieve en el camino. En esa oportunidad, fue esto lo que nos impidió seguir avanzando a mi acompañante y a mí, ya que ninguno de los dos tenía el calzado adecuado. A pesar de haber logrado subir bastante y tener una buena vista de la laguna desde ahí, no pudimos ver el glaciar. Pero esta vez, a finales de Enero 2025, ya no había nada de nieve y el camino era más transitable, por lo que sabía que lograríamos completar el sendero.

Unlike most of the other trails in Ushuaia, this route is not marked at all with the classic yellow signs. Instead, you have to go with an unconnected map and watch out for the markings on the ground, or the stone towers that people have made to mark the trail by hand. I'm not sure if this is to discourage people from going to this place because of its inhospitability or so that the mountain guides can continue to do their business quietly, since in January 2025 a guided trek to this glacier cost $250. In my opinion, the trail itself was not so difficult, but the real difficulty was in finding where you had to go to avoid getting lost.
A diferencia de la mayoría de los demás senderos en Ushuaia, este recorrido no está para nada señalizado con las clásicas chapitas amarillas. En su lugar, hay que ir con un mapa sin conexión y atento a las marcas en el piso, o a las torres de piedras que ha hecho la gente para marcar artesanalmente el camino. No estoy segura de si esto es para desalentar a la gente a que vaya a este lugar por lo inhóspito o para que los guías de montaña puedan seguir haciendo su negocio tranquilos, ya que en Enero 2025 un trekking guiado hasta este glaciar costaba $250. En mi opinión, el sendero no fue tan difícil en sí, sino que la verdadera dificultad estuvo en encontrar hacia dónde había que ir para no perderse.

Our randomly-formed Couchsurfing group of four made it without any problems and we were able to reach the glacier without any problems. This section took us two hours from the lagoon to the top, so if we add the hour and a quarter it takes to get to the lagoon, this trek can easily be done in less than four hours in the summer. I'm sure that in the snowy season it must be really complicated and at that time of the year a guide would be justified if you don't have experience in the mountains, but we managed to get there safe and sound in the summer.
Nuestro grupo de cuatro integrantes random-mente formado en Couchsurfing lo hizo sin problemas y pudimos llegar al glaciar sin problemas. Este tramo nos tomó dos horas desde la laguna hasta ahí arriba, por lo que si añadimos la hora y cuarto que toma llegar hasta la laguna, este trekking se puede hacer fácilmente en menos de cuatro horas en el verano. Estoy segura de que en época de nieve debe ser realmente complicado y en esa época del año si se justificaría el guía que acompañe si no tenes experiencia en la montaña, pero nosotros en verano logramos llegar sanos y salvos.

Regarding the glacier, this landscape was really beautiful. As always, I don't look at many photos of a place before going there because I like to be surprised, and I was. I had no idea that there was a lagoon at the foot of the glacier, so to come across all that scenery was awe-inspiring. Although we had climbed up in the heat of the day, it only took a few minutes to start to feel the cold of being in front of a large glacier.
Respecto al glaciar, este paisaje era realmente hermoso. Como siempre, yo no miro muchas fotos de un lugar antes de ir hasta él porque me gusta sorprenderme, y así fue. No tenía idea de que había una laguna a los pies del glaciar, así que encontrarme con todo ese paisaje fue imponente. A pesar de que habíamos subido con mucho calor, solo bastaron unos minutos para empezar a sentir el frío de estar frente a un gran glaciar.

One of my companions this year had read that it was possible to walk on the glacier and even see caves inside it, but by a majority decision, we did not do this. None of us had crampons and we didn't want to risk hurting ourselves doing that either. In recent years, many people have had accidents in this area and had to be rescued, so I at least didn't want to do anything crazy. I was even shocked by a
news story of an Israeli boy who spent 24 hours broken inside the glacier crevasse until someone miraculously heard him and called for help: it must have been like being born again for him.
Uno de mis acompañantes de este año había leído que era posible caminar sobre el glaciar e incluso ver cuevas dentro de él, pero por decisión mayoritaria, no hicimos esto. Ninguno de nosotros tenía crampones y tampoco queríamos arriesgarnos a lastimarnos haciendo eso. En los últimos años, mucha gente se ha accidentado en esta zona y tuvieron que rescatarla, por lo que al menos yo no quería cometer ninguna locura. Incluso me impactó una noticia de un chico israelí que pasó 24 horas fracturado dentro de la grieta del glaciar hasta que alguien milagrosamente lo oyó y pidió ayuda: seguramente para él habrá sido como volver a nacer.

On my first attempt to reach the Ojo del Albino Glacier and failing, I thought I had come very close to making it. But after actually completing the trail, I concluded that I hadn't even made it halfway that time. I'm also glad I didn't go any further on that occasion, because if it was a bit difficult to find the trail without snow with four people, it would have been worse to do it with only one companion and everything frozen. I was glad to have had this second chance to see it:
now I can say that no trail was left incomplete on my trip to Ushuaia ❤️.
En mi primer intento de llegar hasta el Glaciar Ojo del Albino y fallando, yo creí que había estado muy cerca de lograrlo. Pero después de realmente completar el sendero, concluí en que esa vez ni siquiera había hecho la mitad del camino. También me alegra no haber seguido avanzando en esa ocasión, ya que si fue un poco difícil encontrar el sendero sin nieve siendo cuatro personas, hubiese sido peor hacerlo con solo un acompañante y con todo congelado. Me alegré de haber tenido esta segunda oportunidad de verlo: ahora puedo decir que no me quedó ningún sendero incompleto en mi viaje a Ushuaia ❤️.

The Ojo del Albino Glacier trek is in my Top 3 mountain treks in Ushuaia, along with Cerro Guanaco and Paso de las Aves which I will soon share here. If you like a challenge, this is a good place to go to test yourself. However, you should always exercise caution and listen to nature, when it says no, it's no. I love the mountains but you have to enjoy them consciously:

El trekking al Glaciar Ojo del Albino está en mi Top 3 de paseos a las montañas de Ushuaia, junto con el Cerro Guanaco y el Paso de las Aves. Si te gustan los desafíos, este es un buen lugar para ir a ponerte a prueba. Sin embargo, siempre hay que ir con precaución y hacerle caso a la naturaleza, que cuando dice que no, es no. Me encantan las montañas pero hay que disfrutarlas conscientemente: para disfrutar de paisajes hermosos como este sin problemas, es necesario ser responsable ❤️.
