Today I want to share my experience strolling down one of the most legendary streets in the Cuban capital: O'Reilly Street, located in the municipality of Old Havana. This historic thoroughfare stretches from Avenida Bélgica to Avenida del Puerto, and its facades hold centuries of history, art, and everyday life.
Walking down O'Reilly Street is like opening a history book that suddenly transforms into an explosion of contemporary art. This street, one of Havana's oldest and most iconic, preserves the soul of a 19th-century commercial hub, when its sidewalks were frequented by elegant ladies and prosperous merchants. Today, that colonial legacy coexists with the modern, with residential buildings intertwined with restaurants, shops, and, above all, art.

O’Reilly is one of the most popular streets in Old Havana and contains centers and plazas of great architectural and tourist value, as well as shopping malls. But on this occasion I directed my steps to the area closest to Avenida Bélgica, which has become an urban canvas. In recent years, especially since the 12th Havana Biennial, this artery has been immersed in a sea of creativity. Graffiti, sculptures, reliefs and works made with recycled materials adorn its walls and corners, transforming the everyday landscape into an aesthetic experience.

Pero en esta ocasión, dirigí mis pasos hacia la zona más cercana a la Avenida Bélgica, que se ha convertido en un lienzo urbano. En los últimos años, especialmente desde la XII Bienal de La Habana, esta arteria se ha visto inmersa en un mar de creatividad. Grafitis, esculturas, relieves y obras realizadas con materiales reciclados adornan sus paredes y rincones, transformando el paisaje cotidiano en una experiencia estética.*
     
It's fascinating how urban art intertwines with the diverse architectural styles of this city, where centuries-old facades coexist with more contemporary reinventions. Some ornamental details, still intact despite the passage of time, invite you to stop and contemplate. And right there, between wrought-iron balconies and worn walls, vibrant graffiti emerges that not only beautify the surroundings but also engage with history, creating a visual symphony between the ancient and the ephemeral.

The epicenter of this artistic effervescence lies at the intersection with Villegas Street. There, a red flag waves proclaiming "Barrio de Arte," as if announcing that you've crossed the threshold into another universe. Nearby, the walls breathe color, the textures multiply, and each step reveals a new visual surprise. It's impossible to walk without stopping, without looking, without being enveloped.
*El epicentro de esta efervescencia artística se encuentra en la intersección con la calle Villegas. Allí ondea una bandera color rojo que proclama “Barrio de Arte”, como si anunciara que has cruzado el umbral hacia otro universo. Muy cerca, los muros respiran color, las texturas se multiplican, y cada paso revela una nueva sorpresa visual. Es imposible caminar sin detenerse, sin mirar, sin dejarse envolver.*
   
And right on that corner, like a beating heart, lies the Leo de Lázaro gallery, known as The Eye of the Cyclone. It's a small, almost hidden space, but with a magnetic force. Sculptures, paintings, installations... everything bursts forth with intensity. The atmosphere is decorated with a taste that blends the urban with the intimate, the recycled with the sublime. It's one of those corners where Havana whispers secrets to you, but you have to learn to listen.
*Y justo en esa esquina, como un corazón palpitante, se encuentra la galería Leo de Lázaro, conocida como El Ojo del Ciclón. Es un espacio pequeño, casi oculto, pero con una fuerza magnética. Esculturas, pinturas, instalaciones... todo irrumpe con intensidad. El ambiente está decorado con un gusto que mezcla lo urbano con lo íntimo, lo reciclado con lo sublime. Es uno de esos rincones donde La Habana te susurra secretos, pero hay que aprender a escuchar.*
         
As a tireless admirer of street art, walking these blocks filled me with vitality. I'm thrilled to see how art spills onto the streets, how it transforms the everyday into the extraordinary. O'Reilly preserves its history and reinvents it. And if you ever pass by, it won't be because I tell you to, but because the art will call to you. Because it's impossible not to look when the city becomes a gallery.
