Hallo liebe Community,
auf unserem Rückweg vom Edinburgh Castle machten wir unterwegs auf der Royal Mile nach vielen weiteren tollen Eindrücken der alten Gebäude und Gassen noch einen Stop bei der St. Giles Kathedrale. Allein davor zu stehen war schon ein tolles Gefühl, ein solch großer und prächtiger jahrhundertealter Bau. Zusammen mit vielen anderen Besuchern schlossen wir uns dem Strom hinein an und wurden nicht enttäuscht.
Die St. Giles Kathedrale, auch als High Kirk of Edinburgh bekannt, ist eine der bedeutendsten Kirchen in Schottland und ein historisches Wahrzeichen im Herzen von Edinburgh als beeindruckendes Beispiel gotischer Architektur. Die Geschichte der Kathedrale reicht bis ins 12. Jahrhundert zurück, obwohl der größte Teil des heutigen Gebäudes aus dem 15. Jahrhundert stammt. Sie spielte eine zentrale Rolle in der schottischen Reformation. Trotz ihres Namens ist sie heute keine katholische Kathedrale mehr, sondern die Hauptkirche der Church of Scotland. Das auffälligste Merkmal, das uns bei ihrem Anblick auch gleich auffiel, ist ihre einzigartige Kronenspitze, die die Skyline von Edinburgh prägt.
Als wir nun also hinein kamen, stachen mir sofort die wunderschönen Buntglasfenster und die Thistle Chapel ins Auge, die dem Distelorden, dem höchsten Ritterorden Schottlands, als Versammlungsort dient. Auch das aufwendige Gewölbe, insbesondere die blaue Decke über der riesigen Orgel hatten mich sofort gecatcht. Wie das Sonnenlicht durch die von außen tristen grauen Fenster einfiel und diese in den schönsten Farben zum Leuchten brachte. Einfach toll!
Auf unserem Weg durch das Gotteshaus sahen wir dann auch den gerade erst eingeweihten neunen, in den Boden eingelassenen Gedenkstein für die verstorbene Königin Elisabeth. ER 1926-2022, Lag hier am 12. und 13. September 2022. Stand hier und erinnert nur ewig daran, dass die Queen nach ihrem Tod hier 2 Tage lang aufgebahrt war und die Schotten sich gebührend von ihrer Königin verabschieden konnten. Ich mochte die alte Lady, deshalb war mir hier etwas mulmig zumute.
Nach unserem Besuch der Kathedrale wollten wir noch etwas Essen, bevor wir wieder zurück ins Hotel mussten. ganz in der Nähe des Hotels fanden wir das Restaurant Pizza Pilgrims. Eine Pizzeria mit ausgefallenen Pizzen auf der Karte, die wir nur zu gerne testen wollten. Innen fühlte man sich direkt nach Italien versetzt und an den Wänden hing alles voll mit dem Fußballverein SSC Neapel und dem ewigen Star dort, Diego Maradonna. Die Pizza war dann auch sehr schmackhaft, seht das Bild, sowas kann doch nur gut schmecken oder?
Nachdem wir gegessen hatten, gingen wir noch kurz in den Supermarkt und deckten und mit Souvenirs bzw. schottischen Spezialitäten ein. 3 Packungen Fudge und zwei wunderschöne Dosen Shortbread ( Kekse ) konnten wir ergattern. Für die zeit, wenn wir wieder in Deutschland wären.

On our way back from Edinburgh Castle, after many more wonderful impressions of the old buildings and alleyways, we stopped at St. Giles Cathedral on the Royal Mile. Just standing in front of it was a wonderful feeling, such a large and magnificent centuries-old building. Together with many other visitors, we joined the flow and were not disappointed.
St. Giles Cathedral, also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, is one of the most important churches in Scotland and a historic landmark in the heart of Edinburgh, a stunning example of Gothic architecture. The cathedral's history dates back to the 12th century, although most of the current building dates back to the 15th century. It played a central role in the Scottish Reformation. Despite its name, it is no longer a Catholic cathedral, but the main church of the Church of Scotland. The most striking feature that immediately caught our eye upon seeing it is its unique crown spire, which dominates the Edinburgh skyline.
As we entered, the beautiful stained-glass windows and the Thistle Chapel, which serves as a meeting place for the Order of the Thistle, Scotland's highest order of knighthood, immediately caught my eye. The elaborate vaulting, especially the blue ceiling above the enormous organ, also immediately caught my eye. The way the sunlight streamed through the drab gray windows from the outside, illuminating them in the most beautiful colors. Simply magnificent!
On our way through the church, we also saw the newly dedicated, new memorial stone for the late Queen Elizabeth, set into the floor. HE 1926-2022, lay here on September 12th and 13th, 2022. It stood here and is an eternal reminder that the Queen lay in state here for two days after her death, allowing the Scots to bid a proper farewell to their Queen. I liked the old lady, so I felt a bit uneasy here.
After our visit to the cathedral, we wanted something to eat before heading back to the hotel. Very close to the hotel, we found the restaurant Pizza Pilgrims. A pizzeria with unusual pizzas on the menu that we were more than happy to try. Inside, you felt like you were transported straight to Italy, and the walls were covered in pictures of the SSC Napoli football club and its eternal star, Diego Maradona. The pizza was delicious, too. Just look at the picture, something like that can only taste good, right?
After we'd finished eating, we quickly went to the supermarket and stocked up on souvenirs and Scottish specialties. We managed to snag three packages of fudge and two wonderful tins of shortbread (cookies). For when we're back in Germany.
