This was our visit to Penguin Island, located in Argentine Patagonia, at the southern tip of the American continent. We were staying in Puerto Deseado and from there we set off on an exciting cruise to the island, which, as its name suggests, is home to a colony of penguins. We were going to meet these charming characters, and we couldn't contain our excitement imagining meeting them.

Estábamos alojados en Puerto Deseado y desde allí partimos en una emocionante navegación hasta la isla, que, como su nombre lo indica, es el hogar de una colonia de pingüinos. Íbamos a conocer a estos encantadores personajes, y no podíamos contener nuestra emoción al imaginar el encuentro con ellos.

It was a beautiful sunny day, and I could see this from my bedroom window. The day we had been waiting for was beginning.
Era un hermoso día de sol, y esto lo podía comprobar desde la ventana de mi habitación. Comenzaba el día que tanto esperábamos.
We left our hotel after breakfast, around 8am. We sailed out of the city and headed out to sea, heading for our destination, under a sky adorned with clouds.
Salimos de nuestro hotel después del desayuno, alrededor de las 8 de la mañana. Navegamos dejando atrás la ciudad y nos adentramos en el mar, rumbo a nuestro destino, bajo un cielo adornado con nubes.
After an hour of sailing, we arrived at the island just after 9 in the morning. We explored the place until midday. These were hours full of excitement and contact with wild nature, far from the hands of man and full of life. We saw penguins, seals and various birds. It was an unforgettable experience. This is the first view we had of the island: the sea was quite rough and there was a small pier.
Luego de una hora de navegación, llegamos a la isla pasada las 9 de la mañana. Recorrimos el lugar hasta el mediodía. Fueron unas horas llenas de emoción y contacto con la naturaleza salvaje, alejada de la mano del hombre y llena de vida. Observamos pingüinos, focas y diversas aves. Fue una experiencia inolvidable. Esta es la primera vista que tuvimos de la isla: el mar estaba bastante bravo y había un pequeño embarcadero.
Setting foot on the island and seeing myself in that paradise filled me with emotion. To one side, I saw a colony of male sea lions, and to the other side, penguins, seagulls and other birds were walking around in a friendly manner. The coexistence filled me with amazement. The birds and penguins walked beside us, completely ignoring us; they knew that we were just going to visit them and we had no intention of bothering them. The first thing we did was walk to the shelter and leave our life jackets there to walk more lightly. Meanwhile, our boat moved a few meters out to sea while waiting for us.
Poner un pie en la isla y verme en ese paraíso me llenó de emoción. Hacia un lado, veía una colonia de lobos marinos machos, y hacia el otro lado, caminaban amistosamente pingüinos, gaviotas y otras aves. La convivencia me llenó de asombro. Las aves y los pingüinos caminaban a nuestro lado, ignorándonos por completo; sabían que solo los íbamos a visitar y no teníamos intención de molestarlos. Lo primero que hicimos fue caminar hasta el refugio y dejar allí nuestros chalecos salvavidas para caminar más ligeros. Mientras tanto, nuestro bote se alejó unos metros dentro del mar mientras nos esperaba.
At the beginning of the walk, we are greeted by a welcome sign that tells us that the island is a national wildlife reserve.

To the left, we saw the colony of sea lions. They were at the seashore; while some were bathing in the water, others were sunbathing. They were all making roars, barking and other vocalizations. They looked like grumpy gentlemen fighting among themselves. They were accompanied by seagulls that flew over them and also landed next to them.

Walking along the sea, we saw the Magellanic penguins. They walked elegantly, as if they were dressed in tailcoats and ready to attend a party.
Caminando al costado del mar, vimos a los pingüinos de Magallanes. Caminaban elegantemente, como si estuvieran vestidos de frac y preparados para asistir a una fiesta.
The guide told us that the island is of volcanic origin, which is why we see such a rocky ground. It is among these rocks that the penguins make their nests, taking advantage of the natural holes and crevices that provide them with shelter and protection.
La guía nos contó que el origen de la isla es volcánico, por eso vemos el suelo tan rocoso. Es entre estas rocas que los pingüinos hacen sus nidos, aprovechando los huecos y hendiduras naturales que les brindan refugio y protección.
Other penguins were coming along, descending from the top of the island to reach the seashore. We saw them in groups, walking between the rocks with their cute little steps, almost as if they were parading.
Otros pingüinos venían caminando, descendiendo desde lo alto de la isla para llegar a la orilla del mar. Los veíamos en grupo, caminando entre las rocas con sus pasitos tan simpáticos, casi como si estuvieran desfilando.
They walked among us without fear or shame. Here I am with this little friend who approached me, curious and friendly, as if he wanted to share a moment with us.
Caminaban entre nosotros sin miedo ni vergüenza. Aquí estoy yo con este compañerito que se me acercó, curioso y amigable, como si quisiera compartir un momento con nosotros.
We were so close to them that we could see them in their nests with their babies; some already hatched, others still in their eggs. The postcard was very tender: seeing how they take care of their babies, how they feed them... Defence against predators is very important. Some birds fly over them in search of their food, which is none other than the penguins' eggs. It's sad, but that's the way the food chain works.
Estábamos tan cerca de ellos que podíamos verlos en sus nidos con sus crías; algunos ya nacidos, otros todavía en los huevos. La postal era muy tierna: ver cómo cuidan a sus crías, cómo las alimentan... Es muy importante la defensa contra sus depredadores. Algunas aves los sobrevuelan en busca de su alimento, que no es otro que los huevos de los pingüinos. Es triste, pero así es la cadena alimentaria.
Here are two of my travel companions, absorbed in the scene and taking photos. You can see the path marked with stones, which guides visitors so that they do not stray from the path and do not disturb the penguin colony. On the other hand, you can see a kind of stone corral. The guide told us that, in the past, there were some inhabitants on the island and that it was they who made this corral. Today, the island is inhabited only by penguins, sea lions and various types of birds.
Aquí dos de mis compañeras de viaje, absortas con la escena y tomando fotografías. Se puede apreciar el camino marcado con piedras, que guía a los visitantes para que no se aparten del sendero y no molesten a la colonia de pingüinos. Por otro lado, se aprecia una especie de corral de piedra. La guía nos contó que, en otros tiempos, hubo algunos habitantes en la isla y que fueron ellos quienes hicieron este corral. En la actualidad, la isla está habitada solo por pingüinos, lobos marinos y varios tipos de aves.
I was struck by the yellow color of the rocks, so I looked it up on the internet and discovered that they are lichens that grow on the stones. It is a kind of fungus that gives it that nice touch of color.
Me llamó la atención el color amarillo de las rocas, así que busqué en internet y descubrí que son líquenes que se desarrollan sobre las piedras. Se trata de una especie de hongo que le da ese bonito toque de color.
And suddenly, faced with so much wild beauty and so much shared emotion, we found ourselves in front of the lighthouse on the highest part of the island. The sight was beautiful: an uninhabited island in the middle of the sea and this lighthouse that seemed to be waiting for our visit. We walked enthusiastically towards it, with some difficulty, since the terrain was not flat and was full of rocks, which made it very uneven. But nothing discouraged us, we knew that on the other side of the island we would meet the yellow-crested penguins.
Y de pronto, frente a tanta belleza salvaje y tanta emoción compartida, nos vimos frente al faro en la parte más alta de la isla. El espectáculo era hermoso: una isla deshabitada en medio del mar y este faro que parecía esperar nuestra visita. Caminamos entusiasmados hacia él, con alguna dificultad, ya que el terreno no era plano y estaba lleno de rocas, lo que lo hacía muy accidentado. Pero nada nos desanimaba, sabíamos que del otro lado de la isla nos encontraríamos con los pingüinos de penacho amarillo.
The other side of the island showed its volcanic origin more clearly. The path was steeper and more difficult, making walking a challenge, especially with the weight of our cameras and the backpacks we carried on our backs. In addition, we had to walk slowly and with slow movements so as not to scare the penguins, since we were invading their home. The excitement was so great that when we saw the yellow-crested penguins, we were amazed. We sat on the rocks to admire them and take thousands of photos.
El otro lado de la isla mostraba de manera más evidente su origen volcánico. El camino era más escarpado y difícil, lo que hacía que caminar fuera un reto, especialmente con el peso de nuestras cámaras de fotos y las mochilas que llevábamos en la espalda. Además, debíamos caminar despacio y con movimientos lentos para no asustar a los pingüinos, ya que estábamos invadiendo su hogar. La emoción fue tan grande que, cuando vimos a los pingüinos de penacho amarillo, quedamos asombrados. Nos sentamos sobre las rocas para admirarlos y tomar miles de fotos.
Here are some close-ups of these cute penguins, who, like the Magellanic penguins we saw earlier, are guarding the eggs in their nests. It's so cute to see how they dedicate themselves to protecting and caring for their future offspring, making sure they are safe.

We were mesmerized watching them approach the sea to bathe, taking a well-deserved dip in the cold waters. We were frozen with cold; the wind was intense and increased the feeling of frost, but it did not seem to stop them from playing in the water. Watching them swim and enjoy the sea made us momentarily forget the cold and filled us with joy.
Estábamos hipnotizados viendo cómo se acercaban al mar para bañarse, dándose un merecido chapuzón en las frías aguas. Nosotros estábamos congelados de frío; el viento era intenso y aumentaba la sensación de helada, pero a ellos no parecía impedirles jugar en el agua. Verlos nadar y disfrutar del mar nos hizo olvidar momentáneamente el frío y nos llenó de alegría.
The coast is so rocky and rugged that in one section a hollow formed where the sea water stagnated. It looked like a swimming pool. The yellow-crested penguins bathed and played in it as if it were a swimming pool. It was a pleasure to watch them frolic and play like children; they took turns to bathe there. They threw themselves in as if they were climbing onto a diving board, then came out and dried themselves in the sun while grooming themselves with their beaks. It was a true spectacle of nature.
