Hello friends, this year our family vacation was scheduled for the Algarve, but we decided to change our plans a bit. We left home a day early and, instead of heading straight to our final destination, decided to stop in Beja to get to know the city better. We'd never explored it at our leisure before, and we thought it would be a good opportunity since we love the Alentejo.
It was a very pleasant surprise for us because Beja is a peaceful city with narrow streets full of history, where the spirit of the Alentejo truly shines through. We loved walking through the center; it was like stepping back in time, among walls, whitewashed houses, and ancient churches. We enjoyed the walk so much that we ended up staying overnight, which gave us time to see more and take several photos, which I'll share in this post. Olá amigos este ano as férias em família estavam marcadas para o Algarve, mas resolvemos mudar um pouco os planos saímos de casa um dia mais cedo e, em vez de irmos logo para o destino final, decidimos parar em Beja para conhecer melhor a cidade. Nunca tínhamos explorado com calma e achámos que podia ser uma boa oportunidade já que adoramos o Alentejo.
Para nós foi uma surpresa muito agradável porque Beja é uma cidade tranquila, com ruas estreitas e cheias de história, onde se sente bem o espírito do Alentejo. nós adoramos caminhar pelo centro foi como andar no tempo, entre muralhas, casas brancas e igrejas antigas. Gostámos tanto do passeio que acabámos por ficar a dormir por lá, o que nos deu tempo para ver mais e tirar várias fotografias que partilho neste post e espero que gostem e partam a aventura deste sitio magnifico connosco.

For accommodations, we decided to stay at a really cool place called Guest House Stories. It's a unique space with a charming literary theme, with references to various writers in every corner. It truly feels like being in a library, surrounded by books and history. It was a great surprise for us, and it was one of my favorite places during our time in Beja, and I highly recommend it.

Em termos de alojamento decidimos ficar a dormir num sítio muito giro chamado Guest House Stories. É um espaço diferente, com um tema literário cheio de charme e cada canto tem referências a vários escritores e dá mesmo a sensação de estarmos numa biblioteca, rodeados de livros e de história para nós foi uma grande surpresa e foi um dos lugares que mais gostei nesta passagem por Beja e que recomendo bastante.

🏰 Beja Castle
One of my favorite visits was to Beja Castle. As soon as I entered, I was impressed by the walls and all its architecture, which makes us imagine what life would have been like in those ancient times. What struck me most was climbing the towers and enjoying the view from up there; you can see the entire city and even the Alentejo skyline as far as the eye can see. 🏰 Castelo de Beja
Uma das visitas que mais gostei foi ao Castelo de Beja e assim que entrei, fiquei impressionado com as muralhas e toda a sua arquitetura, que nos faz imaginar como seria a vida naqueles tempos antigos. O que mais me marcou foi subir às torres e apreciar a vista lá de cima, dá para ver a cidade inteira e ainda o horizonte do Alentejo a perder de vista. Foi um momento especial da visita e sem dúvida um dos pontos altos da passagem por Beja por isso partilho estas fotografias convosco deste local mítico.

⛪ Cathedral Church / Santiago Maior Parish
During my visit to Beja, I also passed by the Cathedral Church, known as the Parish of Santiago Maior. Its façade immediately stands out, but what I loved most was the interior. I still remember the walls, decorated with beautiful, antique blue tiles, which make the space even more special. There are also several pieces of sacred art that showcase the richness and history of this church, and they are stunning. Another detail that struck me was seeing the tomb of Dom José do Patrocínio Dias, bishop of Beja, which adds even more historical significance to the place. ⛪ Igreja Catedral / Paróquia de Santiago Maior
Durante a minha visita a Beja, passei também pela Igreja Catedral, conhecida por Paróquia de Santiago Maior. A sua fachada destaca-se imediatamente, mas o que mais apreciei foi o interior. Ainda me lembro das paredes, decoradas com bonitos azulejos azuis antigos, que tornam o espaço ainda mais especial. Existem também várias peças de arte sacra que demonstram a riqueza e a história desta igreja, e são deslumbrantes. Outro pormenor que me marcou foi ver o túmulo de D. José do Patrocínio Dias, bispo de Beja, que acrescenta ainda mais significado histórico ao local. Foi uma visita rápida, mas muito interessante, e recomendo este local a quem passa pela cidade.

⏰ Beja Bell and Clock Tower
One of the highlights I loved was during my tour of the historic center, passing by the Bell and Clock Tower, one of the city's most famous landmarks. The tower is imposing and steeped in history, with ancient bells and clocks on each face at the top, and the famous bull's head, the symbol of Beja, at the base.
I admit I admired the tower from the street and took photos, appreciating its architecture and historical details. Even without climbing it, it's impossible not to be impressed by the tower's presence and the charm it adds to the city center, another must-see when visiting Beja. 🏰🏛️⛪🌿⚖️🍽️🏰🏛️⛪🌿⚖️🍽️🏰🏛️⛪🌿⚖️🍽️🏰🏛️⛪🌿⚖️🍽️🏰🏛️⛪🌿⚖️🍽️

⏰ Torre do Sino e Relógio de Beja
Um dos pontos altos que adorei foi durante o meu passeio pelo centro histórico, passando pela Torre do Sino e Relógio, um dos marcos mais famosos da cidade. A torre é imponente e rica em história, com sinos e relógios antigos em cada face no topo, e a famosa cabeça de touro, símbolo de Beja, na base.
Confesso que admirei a torre da rua e tirei fotografias, apreciando a sua arquitetura e pormenores históricos. Mesmo sem subir, é impossível não ficar impressionado com a presença da torre e o encanto que acrescenta ao centro da cidade, outro ponto turístico imperdível de Beja.

🏛️ Rainha Dona Leonor Museum (Beja)
Another place that caught my attention was during my tour of Beja. I passed by the Rainha Dona Leonor Museum, which is housed in the former Convent of Nossa Senhora da Conceição. We didn't go inside, but even without going inside, I admired the building's facade and architecture. It's beautiful and full of history. I think it's one of the city's important landmarks and makes for great photographs, showcasing the tranquility and charm of the historic center. 🏛️ Museu Rainha Dona Leonor (Beja)
Outro local que me chamou a atenção foi durante o meu passeio por Beja. Passei pelo Museu Rainha Dona Leonor, instalado no antigo Convento de Nossa Senhora da Conceição. Não entrámos, mas mesmo sem entrar, admirei a fachada e a arquitetura do edifício. É lindo e cheio de história. Considero-o um dos marcos importantes da cidade e proporciona ótimas fotos, demonstrando a tranquilidade e o encanto do centro histórico. Adorei este lugar.

⚖️ Beja Pillory
Also on this visit and historical tour of Beja, I passed by the Pillory, an important symbol of the city's history. It's an ancient stone column. I enjoyed observing the details of its sculpture and imagining what life in the city would have been like so many centuries ago. ⚖️ Pelourinho de Beja
Ainda nesta visita e passeio histórico por Beja, passei pelo Pelourinho, um importante símbolo da história da cidade. É uma antiga coluna de pedra. Gostei de observar os detalhes da sua escultura e imaginar como seria a vida na cidade há tantos séculos. O Pelourinho fica num espaço aberto, óptimo para tirar fotografias e espreitar a história de Beja.

🍽️ Gastronomy in Beja
Regarding gastronomy, during my visit, we decided to try some local food. I tried black pork tapas, very typical of this Alentejo region, accompanied by a cold beer, and it was truly delicious. My children opted for burgers and Alentejo meat, which they also loved. It was a wonderful experience that perfectly rounded out the day, showcasing not only the beauty of the city but also the unique flavors of this region. 🍽️ Gastronomia em Beja
Em relação à gastronomia, durante a minha visita, decidimos experimentar a comida local. Provei tapas de porco preto, muito típicas desta região do Alentejo, acompanhadas por uma cerveja fresca, e estava realmente delicioso. Os meus filhos optaram por hambúrgueres e carne alentejana, que também adoraram. Foi uma experiência maravilhosa que completou o dia na perfeição, realçando não só a beleza da cidade, mas também os sabores únicos desta região. Decidimos voltar um dia para conhecer Beja ainda melhor e provar outras iguarias gastronómicas da região assim que surgir a oportunidade.
