Climbing Piedras Blancas Peak, the 5th highest in Venezuela / Subiendo el Pico Piedras Blancas, el 5to más alto de Venezuela

Defying the intense cold that enveloped our camp in the High of Mifafí, on the second day of our journey through these Merida mountains, we got up at 6:00 a.m. to go after the day's objective: to climb Piedras Blancas (White Stones) or Misamán Peak, which at 4,737 meters above sea level (masl) is the highest peak in the Sierra de la Culata National Park and the fifth highest in the country. >>Desafiando el intenso frío que arropó nuestro campamento en el Alto de Mifafí, en el segundo día de travesía por estas montañas merideñas nos levantamos como a las 6:00 de la mañana para ir tras el objetivo del día: ascender el Pico Piedras Blancas o Misamán, que con sus 4.737 metros sobre el nivel del mar (msnm) es el más alto del Parque Nacional Sierra de la Culata y el quinto más alto del país.  My sister didn't want to come and stayed with some other people in the group who also preferred to stay in the camp doing short hikes around. We had breakfast and set off, the day dawned with clouds but in the distance we could see hope of sunshine hahaha. >>Mi hermana no quiso venir y se quedó con algunas otras personas del grupo que también prefirieron quedarse en el campamento haciendo caminatas cortas por los alrededores. Desayunamos y nos pusimos en marcha, el día amaneció con nubes pero a lo lejos se veía esperanza de sol jajaja.  The distance we were going to cover on this day was about 8 km. We started to advance and the wonderful views of this Andean scenery began to appear. >>La distancia que íbamos a recorrer en esta jornada era de unos 8 Km. Fuimos avanzando y empezaron a aparecer las maravillosas vistas de este escenario andino.  When we had been walking for about an hour, Yraly, our guide on this excursion, told us to see our goal in the distance. In the photo below we can see Mucumamó Peak (4,620 masl) on the left and Piedras Blancas Peak (4,737 masl) to the right in the center, where two triangular formations stand out. >>Cuando teníamos como una hora caminando, Yraly, nuestra guía en esta excursión, nos indicó que viéramos a lo lejos nuestra meta, en la foto a continuación se ve a la izquierda el Pico Mucumamó (4.620 msnm) y a su derecha en el centro, donde destacan dos formaciones triangulares, el Pico Piedras Blancas (4.737 msnm).   _{The somewhat deteriorated warning of the High of Piedras Blancas, here we are at 4,410 masl / El aviso algo deteriorado del Alto de Piedras Blancas, aquí estamos a 4.410 msnm} --- The frailejones (Espeletia), those plants that are like velvet to the touch, are much more abundant at higher altitudes. Taking an infusion of their leaves is very good against the flu. >>Los frailejones (Espeletia), esas plantas que al tacto son como el terciopelo, son mucho más abundantes a mayor altura. Tomar una infusión de sus hojas es buenísimo contra la gripe.  Before 9:30 in the morning we reached a flat area where we made a brief stop to rest and eat something. On high mountain hikes it is important to go slowly, hydrate constantly and eat something to give you energy, a sweet guava snack for example, to prevent altitude sickness from wreaking havoc on your body. >>Antes de las 9:30 de la mañana llegamos a una parte plana donde hicimos una breve parada para descansar y comer algo. En las caminatas por alta montaña es importante ir despacio, hidratarse constantemente y comer algo que te de energía, un bocadillo bien dulce de guayaba por ejemplo, así evitas que el mal de altura haga estragos en tu cuerpo.    The cold was strong, I felt my face like freezing, but fortunately the clouds retreated and the sun could shine and warm us in this stretch of the route. We were already near the base of Piedras Blancas Peak where there is a lagoon, and everything around us looked like something out of this planet, those mountains in light tones are a very surreal landscape, you feel like you are inside a Dali painting. >>El frío estaba fuerte, sentía mi cara como congelada, pero afortunadamente las nubes se retiraron y el sol pudo brillar y calentarnos en este tramo de la ruta. Ya estábamos cerca de la base del Pico Piedras Blancas donde hay una laguna, y todo a nuestro alrededor lucía como algo fuera de este planeta, esas montañas en tonos claros son un paisaje muy surrealista, te sientes dentro de un cuadro de Dalí.    A few minutes later we arrived at the lagoon, small but very striking, and we stopped for a while to take pictures and also check the water temperature, yes, super cold. >>Pocos minutos después llegamos a esa laguna, pequeña pero muy llamativa, y nos detuvimos un rato para hacer fotos y también chequear la temperatura del agua, sí, súper fría.   _{The lagoon located at the base of the Piedras Blancas peak is at 4,395 masl / La laguna situada en la base del pico Piedras Blancas está a 4.395 msnm}    _{Group photo courtesy of the Caracas Hiking Center / Foto grupal cortesía del Centro Excursionista Caracas} --- From here began the ascent to the summit of Piedras Blancas Peak, on this trail there are rocks of all sizes everywhere and that's why it gets a little difficult, you have to go carefully and slowly because the altitude begins to hit. I felt a pressure in my head and opted to take a deep breath and take a short break with other companions who were feeling the same as me. >>A partir de aquí comenzó el ascenso hacia la cima del Pico Piedras Blancas, en este sendero hay rocas de todos los tamaños por doquier y por eso se pone algo difícil, hay que ir con cuidado y lento porque la altura empieza a pegar. Yo sentí una presión en la cabeza y opté por respirar profundo y hacer una breve pausa junto a otros compañeros que estaban sintiéndose igual que yo.   _{Photo courtesy of the Caracas Hiking Center / Foto cortesía del Centro Excursionista Caracas} --- Taking big breaths of air and contemplating the spectacular scenery, we recovered our heads to continue climbing without pressure. >>Tomando grandes bocanadas de aire y contemplando el espectacular paisaje recuperamos nuestra cabeza para seguir subiendo sin presión.   _{Photo courtesy of the Caracas Hiking Center / Foto cortesía del Centro Excursionista Caracas} --- The last stretch of the climb is really between hundreds of loose white stones, I guess that's why the name of this summit, although I also read that it is because in the snowy season the snow remains here for several days and paints everything white. Anyway, the place is mind-blowing. >>El último tramo de la subida es realmente entre cientos de piedras blancas sueltas, supongo que a eso se debe el nombre de esta cima, aunque leí también que es porque en época de nevada la nieve permanece varios días aquí y pinta todo de blanco. Sea como sea el lugar es alucinante.   The sky clouded over as we reached the top, mist surrounded several places and visibility around us diminished. >>El cielo se nubló mientras llegábamos arriba, la neblina rodeó varios lugares y la visibilidad a nuestro alrededor disminuyó.  Finally, at 11:45 in the morning, we reached the summit! There is a concrete milestone with a plaque that officially identifies it. >>Finalmente, a las 11:45 de la mañana, ¡llegamos a la cima! On clear days as the guide told us, you can see from here the Sierra Nevada of Merida and the Lake of Maracaibo located in the neighboring state of Zulia, we couldn't see them because of the fog but we did enjoy more splendid views of the moor. >>Estuvimos descansando y contemplando allí como una hora. En días despejados según nos dijo la guía, se puede ver desde aquí la Sierra Nevada de Mérida y el Lago de Maracaibo ubicado en el vecino estado Zulia, no pudimos verlos por la neblina pero sí disfrutamos de más vistas esplendorosas del páramo.   _{Photo courtesy of the Caracas Hiking Center / Foto cortesía del Centro Excursionista Caracas} --- It was time to start the descent to return to our camp in the High of Mifafí, the sun didn't want to come out anymore so the cold did its thing again in our bodies. >>Era hora de emprender la bajada para regresar a nuestro campamento en el Alto de Mifafí, el sol no quiso salir más así que el frío hizo de las suyas de nuevo en nuestros cuerpos.   _{Photo courtesy of the Caracas Hiking Center / Foto cortesía del Centro Excursionista Caracas} --- When we were already arriving at the campsite around 3:00 in the afternoon, a drizzle began to fall and we all hurried because we didn't want to get wet in that cold. Immediately everyone went into their tents, a few minutes later my sister arrived to take shelter, she was with our group mates who, like her, didn't go with us to climb the peak. >>Cuando ya estábamos llegando al campamento cerca de las 3:00 de la tarde, comenzó a caer una llovizna y todos nos apuramos porque no queríamos mojarnos con ese frío que hacía. Inmediatamente cada quien se metió en su carpa, a los pocos minutos llegó a refugiarse mi hermana, que estaba por ahí con los compañeros del grupo que como ella no fueron con nosotros a subir el pico.  The rest of the afternoon was a bit boring because we had to wait for a few hours for it to clear so we could go out for a while, and when we went out the cold was so strong that you wanted to get back into the tent hahaha, anyway, that night we had another tough battle against the cold that consumed us and we lost, we didn't sleep almost nothing, the funny thing is that at dawn when I went out to pee it was less cold outside than in the tent and I could also see a stunning starry sky. >>El resto de la tarde fue algo aburrida porque tuvimos que esperar unas horas que escampara para poder salir un rato, y al salir el frío estaba tan potente que te querías volver a meter en la carpa jajaja, en fin, esa noche tuvimos otra dura batalla contra el frío que nos consumía y perdimos, no dormimos casi nada, lo curioso es que en la madrugada cuando salí a orinar hacía menos frío afuera que en la carpa y además pude observar un impactante cielo estrellado.
