Located in Stoney Creek Ontario, The Grassie Blacksmith Shop was built in 1847 by Robert Grassie. An Irish settler who came to an area that was known as Mount Albion, one of the first settlements of Hamilton Ont.
Photo of the blacksmith shop in the 1950s.
Robert Grassie was killed in a work accident at the Albion Mill, in the year 1907. The mill itself was demolished in 1915 and Mount Albion became part of Hamilton. But his blacksmith shop remained until it was destroyed by fire in 1984. After the fire the city wanted to restore the blacksmith shop, but said they did not have the funding to do it. So they erected a chain link fence around it and it has sat like that since.
I had only gone by the ruins once before and very briefly. Just looking at it from the trail beside it. So yesterday evening I decided to go check it out! It sits right at the head of a trail in a new housing development, barely visible from the overgrowth on the fence.
After walking to the back of the building, I found a small hole in the fence and climbed through.
The remaining stone work is incredible! I wanted to get detail shots but as it got darker, it was best to take wider angle landscape photos and wait to return in the day time for the detailed shots.
This is a great explore for a history lover! I would highly recommend it if you are in the Hamilton Ont. area!
