Unsere Reise führte uns weiter in das Herz der Pfalz – nach Neustadt an der Weinstraße. Eingebettet in eines der bedeutendsten Weinbaugebiete Deutschlands, prägen hier Reben die Landschaft, die Kultur und den Alltag. Zwischen sanften Hügeln und weitläufigen Weinbergen fanden wir unseren Stellplatz ruhig gelegen am Rand von Hambach. Ein idealer Ausgangspunkt für ein Ziel, das wir schon lange besuchen wollten: das Hambacher Schloss – ein Ort von besonderer historischer Bedeutung und Symbol der deutschen Demokratiebewegung.

Our journey took us further into the heart of the Palatinate – to Neustadt an der Weinstraße. Nestled in one of Germany’s most important wine-growing regions, the landscape, culture, and everyday life here are shaped by vineyards. Surrounded by gentle hills and expansive wine slopes, we found our pitch in a quiet spot on the edge of Hambach. An ideal starting point for a destination we had long wanted to visit: Hambach Castle – a place of great historical significance and a symbol of the German democratic movement.

Ein Schloss mit Geschichte

Das Hambacher Schloss thront auf einem Hügel über der Rheinebene, umgeben von Reben, Kastanien und einem weiten Blick ins Land. Schon der Weg hinauf ist eindrucksvoll. Als wir dort ankamen, empfing uns ein Ort, der auf leise Weise mächtig wirkt. Nicht durch Größe oder Prunk, sondern durch das, was hier einst geschah.

Hambach Castle sits proudly atop a hill overlooking the Rhine plain, surrounded by vineyards, chestnut trees, and sweeping views across the land. Even the path leading up to it is impressive. When we arrived, we were greeted by a place that radiates quiet strength. Not through grandeur or opulence, but through the weight of what once happened here.

Im Jahr 1832 wurde das Schloss zum Schauplatz des sogenannten Hambacher Festes – einem Meilenstein in der deutschen Geschichte. Rund 30.000 Menschen kamen damals zusammen, um für Pressefreiheit, nationale Einheit und bürgerliche Rechte zu demonstrieren. Die berühmten schwarz-rot-goldenen Fahnen flatterten im Wind – zum ersten Mal bewusst als Symbol für Freiheit und Einheit. Was heute selbstverständlich erscheint, war damals ein revolutionärer Akt.

In 1832, the castle became the site of the so-called Hambach Festival – a milestone in German history. Around 30,000 people gathered here to demand freedom of the press, national unity, and civil rights. The famous black-red-gold flags fluttered in the wind – for the first time deliberately used as a symbol of freedom and unity. What seems self-evident today was, back then, a revolutionary act.

Die Ausstellung im Schloss nimmt einen mit auf diese Zeitreise. Mit vielen interaktiven Stationen, historischen Dokumenten und audiovisuellen Installationen wird greifbar, wie tief der Wunsch nach Demokratie verwurzelt war – und wie mutig die Menschen waren, die damals ihre Stimme erhoben. Für mich war es besonders bewegend zu sehen, wie viele Parallelen es zwischen damals und heute gibt: der Wunsch nach Mitbestimmung, Gerechtigkeit, Meinungsfreiheit.

The exhibition inside the castle takes visitors on a journey through time. With interactive displays, historical documents, and audiovisual installations, it brings to life how deeply rooted the desire for democracy was – and how courageous those people were who dared to raise their voices. For me, it was especially moving to see how many parallels still exist today: the desire for participation, justice, freedom of expression.

Nach dem Besuch des Schlosses fuhren wir mit dem Bus hinunter in die Stadt. Neustadt selbst ist charmant, mit seinen verwinkelten Gassen, Fachwerkhäusern und einer Atmosphäre, die zwischen lebendig und gelassen pendelt.

Hier, am Marktplatz, begann einst der Marsch hinauf zum Schloss. Heute steht dort eine Stele, die an das Hambacher Fest erinnert – ein stiller, aber sprechender Ort. Für uns war es wichtig, diesen Ort bewusst mit einzubeziehen. Geschichte endet nicht auf dem Berg – sie beginnt dort oft erst richtig. In den Straßen von Neustadt ist sie noch spürbar. Nicht laut, nicht aufdringlich – aber präsent.

For us, it felt important to consciously include this spot. History doesn’t end on the hill – it often begins there. In the streets of Neustadt, its presence is still tangible. An Evening in Our Own Kitchen

Zurück am Stellplatz gönnten wir uns ein kulinarisches Highlight – selbstgemacht. In einem nahegelegenen Supermarkt kauften wir alles für ein einfaches, aber köstliches Abendessen: Käsespätzle mit einem frischen Salat aus regionalem Anbau. Der Duft von gebräunten Zwiebeln und geschmolzenem Käse vermischte sich mit der Abendluft, während rund um uns langsam Ruhe einkehrte. Vanlife pur – einfach, selbstbestimmt, nah an der Natur.

Back at the camper site, we treated ourselves to a culinary highlight – homemade. At a nearby supermarket, we bought everything we needed for a simple yet delicious dinner: cheese spaetzle with a fresh salad made from locally grown produce. The scent of golden-browned onions and melted cheese mingled with the evening air as the world around us slowly settled into quiet. Pure vanlife – simple, self-determined, close to nature.

Neustadt an der Weinstraße ist nicht nur ein Zentrum des Weinbaus – es ist auch ein Ort des Erinnerns. Die Weinberge erzählen vom Leben mit der Natur, das Schloss von der Sehnsucht nach Freiheit. Beides gehört zusammen. Für uns war dieser Ausflug mehr als ein Programmpunkt auf der Reiseliste. Es war ein Tag, der nachhallte. In Gedanken, Gesprächen – und vielleicht auch im Geschmack der Spätzle.

Neustadt an der Weinstraße is not only a center of viticulture – it is also a place of remembrance. The vineyards speak of a life lived with nature, the castle of a yearning for freedom. The two go hand in hand. For us, this outing was more than just another stop on our travel itinerary. It was a day that stayed with us – in thoughts, in conversations, and perhaps even in the lingering taste of the spaetzle.

... am Ortsrand von Neustadt an der Weinstraße-Hambach ist ein kostenpflichtiger Platz, der ganzjährig genutzt werden kann und direkt neben einem Schwimmbad liegt. Er ist von 8:00 bis 23:00 Uhr zugänglich, wobei mittags von 12:00 bis 14:00 Uhr eine Ruhezeit eingehalten wird. Der Platz ist geschottert und teilweise uneben. Frischwasser kann für 1,00 € pro 100 Liter aufgefüllt werden, und die Entsorgung von Schwarz- und Grauwasser befindet sich etwa 500 Meter entfernt beim Eingang zum Gelände des 1. FC im Diedesfelder Weg. Das Zentrum von Hambach ist in wenigen Minuten zu Fuß zu erreichen, wo man einen Bäcker und verschiedene Weinlokale findet. Ein Supermarkt ist ebenfalls nur wenige Gehminuten entfernt. Das Hambacher Schloss liegt etwa 1,5 km entfernt und kann zu Fuß, mit dem Rad oder dem Bus erreicht werden. Der Weg zu Fuß und mit dem Rad ist jedoch anspruchsvoll, da eine steile Strecke überwunden werden muss. Direkt beim Stellplatz befindet sich eine Bushaltestelle. Die Lage des Stellplatzes ist zudem ideal, um die rund 5 km entfernte Altstadt von Neustadt an der Weinstraße zu besuchen. Ausgeschilderte Rad- und Wanderwege bieten zahlreiche Möglichkeiten, die Umgebung zu erkunden.

... on the outskirts of Neustadt an der Weinstraße-Hambach is a paid parking space that can be used year-round, located directly next to a swimming pool. It is accessible from 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM, with a rest period from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. The area is gravelled and partially uneven. Freshwater can be filled up for €1.00 per 100 liters, and disposal of black and grey water is available about 500 meters away at the entrance to the 1. FC facility on Diedesfelder Weg. The center of Hambach is just a few minutes' walk away, where you will find a bakery and various wine taverns. A supermarket is also just a short walk from the parking area. The Hambach Castle is approximately 1.5 km away and can be reached by foot, bike, or bus. However, the walk and bike ride are quite challenging due to a steep incline. A bus stop is located directly at the parking area. The location is also an excellent starting point for visiting the historic city center of Neustadt an der Weinstraße, which is about 5 km away. Signposted cycling and hiking trails offer many opportunities to explore the surrounding area.
