The summer birds have already arrived, but snow is still frequent and the areas along the shores of Lake Superior are still covered in snow and ice. This series was taken last week - on the 28th of March... when we felt the need to visit the Lake once more.
I took some pictures along here last September, though I haven't dug them out since our recent move to our new apartment. I can tell you now, though, that all that ice and snow is covering beautiful Chequamegon Bay. (That's pronounced shuh-WAH-meh-gone.)
Maslowski Beach is just west of Ashland, Wisconsin. We like visiting this park as it lets us get in touch (literally) with Lake Superior. It is still my goal to live nearer this beautiful lake - I'm just not there yet.
Winter is typically long here - and not the on-again-off-again thing that I learned to loathe in Wyoming. Here, it typically starts snowing in November and keeps going through March... with some extra snows in both October and April. Not too different than Wyoming, but here, we get to keep the snow and enjoy it a bit more. (Though there are many here who complain bitterly about it!)
Still, the snowy winter is part of the Wisconsin and Upper Peninsula (Michigan) culture and part of what makes the people who they are.
My first husband and his family moved to neighboring Minnesota back in '76. From England, they were fairly ignorant about the typical winters in this part of the country. They drove around seeing all these snow-covered "fields"... it wasn't until the spring thaw that they realized that many of those "fields" were, in fact, lakes! (Minnesota is known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes.)
