Winter on the South coast of Africa is the best time to catch the most beautiful sunrise and sunset. The clouds and alignment of the sun are just right for some epic scenes.
These photos were taken at sunrise on the beach, perhaps the most beautiful beach in southern Africa in my opinion, in the town of Plettenberg Bay.
In the distance the sun is about to rise in the east over the Tsitsikamma mountain range. In fact at this time of year from this angle the sun rises right over the highest peak in the range, called Formosa Peak.
When the first European sailors passed by here on their way to the east for trade, they called this place Bahia Formosa, or Beautiful Bay. And the name stayed on at the mountain peak, hundreds of years later.
Here on the south coast of Africa, life can be somewhat precarious on multiple levels, yet I always have this uplifting and exquisite view and surroundings to sweeten the experience.
You can see in the photos how the light changes by the minute. From one moment to the next, as the sun rise brings more light, the scene changes color, like the living masterpiece that it is.
So I share my priceless yet free treasure here with you today, in case your setting is not as inspiring and you wish to connect with the beauty of nature that does still exist for now, if you care to take a look.
