I just want to share something that happened more than a week ago, though I should have posted it earlier but I couldn’t get the chance until now. As many of you already know, I am studying National Diploma in Food and Nutrition (NDFT) in school, but at the same time I work in an insurance company called Universal Insurance PLC. Balancing both school and work is not always easy, but somehow I try my best to keep up with both sides.
So last week, our company had a celebration and it was really a memorable one. The event took place at Eleko beach in Lagos, and honestly it was a different kind of vibe for me. Normally, the finance world is not one where you see people celebrate a lot. Most of the time, people in finance are always busy, calculating, checking numbers, and making sure there is no mistake. A single distraction can even cost you and the company a huge loss. That’s how tight the world of finance can be, but this time around the company decided that everyone should take a break and just have fun together.
Both the junior and senior staff members were present, and I love that nobody was left out. Everyone was just relaxed and happy. For once, we were not talking about work, deadlines or targets. We laughed, played, ate, and enjoyed the fresh air of the beach. You know sometimes when you are always in that serious environment of finance, you forget how important it is to unwind and connect with your colleagues in another way. That day showed me that beyond work and pressure, we are also humans who deserve joy.
I also noticed something that day, when people who usually act serious in the office started dancing and smiling, it made me realize that work shouldn’t always be about stress. Seeing my bosses dancing freely and chatting with everyone was something I didn’t expect but it was beautiful. We took pictures, walked around the beach, and just allowed ourselves to enjoy the moment.
Another thing is that the celebration was not just for fun, but also to recognize those who have been working tirelessly for the company. It was more like appreciation, to remind everyone that their efforts are seen and valued. That part made me really happy because it feels good when hard work is acknowledged.
Even after the beach celebration ended, the joy didn’t stop there. People still talked about it the next day at work, and you could feel the bond between us growing stronger. To me, this kind of gathering is very important because it creates a sense of unity and family within the company.
I am really glad I was part of it and I just thought to share this here. Sometimes it’s not just about numbers and targets, but also about happiness and creating memories with people you work with.
