Halloween Lessons and How Quickly Kids Grow
One of my favourite event lessons is Halloween. That’s because it’s fun, spooky, and similar to the Japanese Obon festival, which is about honouring and welcoming our ancestors’ spirits.
I used to go trick-or-treating with my students for many years. Since switching to online lessons, I still want to try something fun. When I asked my students to wear their favourite costumes for the lesson day, they got so excited and made their own original costumes. However, I noticed that their generation has been changing little by little.
This year, I didn’t encourage them to wear costumes. Instead, I suggested that if they wanted, they could decorate their rooms or use festive backgrounds. I also decided to decorate my office a little around the screen and made a Hello Kitty pumpkin face before carving it.
Carving is not my ritual. It’s my husband’s. He usually roasts the seeds after carving. Before that, I used the pumpkin for my lesson. When I placed the Hello Kitty pumpkin next to me online, it actually looked both creepy and fun. One of my students created a hilarious decoration. She still has a child’s creative spirit, even though she didn’t wear a costume this year.
Anyway, we all enjoyed the cultural lesson together. Time really flies. Kids grow up so quickly!

ハロウィンレッスン、お子さんたちの成長の早さ
私のお気に入りのイベントレッスンのひとつはハロウィンです。楽しくて、ちょっと不気味で、日本の祖先の霊を敬い迎えるお盆と少し似ているからです。
以前は長年、生徒さんたちと一緒にトリック・オア・トリートをしていましたが、オンライン授業に切り替えてからも、何か楽しいことをしたいと思っていました。レッスンの日に好きなコスチュームを着てくるようお願いしたところ、大喜びでオリジナルの衣装を作ってきました。でも、その中で少しずつ世代の変化も感じるようになりました。
今年は特にコスチュームを勧めませんでした。その代わり、希望する生徒には自分の部屋を飾ったり、背景をハロウィン風にしてはどうかと伝えました。私自身も、画面の周りを少しだけ飾って、ハローキティのかぼちゃの顔を作ってみました（かぼちゃをくり抜く前に）。
くり抜き作業は私の役目ではなく、主人の恒例行事です。主人はいつもくり抜いた後に種を炒ってくれます。その前に、私は授業でかぼちゃを使います。オンラインでハローキティのかぼちゃを顔の隣に置くと、かなり不気味で楽しい雰囲気になります。ある生徒さんはとてもユニークなデコレーションを作ってくれて、衣装は着なかったけれど、まだ子どもらしい創造力を持っているなあと感じました。
とにかく、みんなで文化的なレッスンを楽しむことができました。本当に時間が経つのは早いもので、子どもさんたちはあっという間に大きくなっていきますね。
