More than four or five years ago this book was recommended to me, and I tried to read it, but my focus was so scattered at that time that I didn't get past the first chapter, recently I was reminded of it again and I almost automatically processed the book with Bionic Reading and started to read it. This time I did finish reading it, it took me a lot, but I made it, not because the book is bad, or I didn't like it, but because I'm not in a good place mentally to read about the internal and external problems of a man who lives in a world where animal meat was forbidden and now they raise humans to eat them, only they don't call them humans anymore.
That's right, in Cadaver Exquisito it is declared worldwide that animal meat is no longer edible, because according to them they developed a disease that humans contract with their contact or consumption, so practically all kinds of animals became a problem for humans. What is the first thing they do? Declare that human meat is now the one that will be consumed, only that they will not be human as such, well, not according to their standards and laws, but they will raise humans for human consumption, now they will call it special meat, they will be genetically modified so that their development is fast, in order to satisfy the human need to eat meat, either from animals, or from other humans, who legally are no longer human.

Half res. Stunner. Slaughter line. Spray bath. Those words pop into his head and hit him. They tear him apart. But they are not just words. They are the blood, the dense smell, the automation, the not thinking. They burst in at night, when he's off guard. He wakes up with a layer of sweat covering his body because he knows another day of human slaughter awaits him. No one calls them that, he thinks, as he lights a cigarette. He doesn't call them that when he has to explain the meat cycle to a new employee. They could arrest him for doing it, they could even send him to the Municipal Slaughterhouse and prosecute him. Murder would be the exact word, though not the one allowed. As he takes off his soaked T-shirt he tries to shake off the nagging idea that they are just that, humans, bred to be edible animals. He goes to the refrigerator and pours himself some ice water. He sips it slowly. His brain warns him that there are words that cover up the world. There are words that are convenient, hygienic. Legal.
Media res. Aturdidor. Legales. This book became one of my favorite books from the first page of the first chapter, by the time I got to the last page I didn't know whether to cry from love, from horror, whether to vomit, whether to kill myself, whether to kill someone, so I just stayed silent letting the reality of the book pass through me and leave me little by little, although it would always be with me in my mind and would never leave me. You either love this book, or you hate it, but it is impossible to be inert to the world this story shows us. Cruel, gore, raw, bloody, but at the same time beautiful, sad, troubled, nostalgic. A story that demonstrates what could be considered true human nature, the animal and visceral nature that hides behind the clothes we wear, for it has already been proven throughout history, just because something is legal does not mean it is good, or should be done, and less than 100 years ago slavery was legal, so this book is not too far from reality, for better or worse. While I absolutely madly love books that leave everything to the imagination no matter what situation they are describing, sometimes it is necessary to read something completely descriptive of things, whether this is a fantasy story where there are battles of magical creatures against evil humans who use magic, or, how it would come to be the process by which humans would be born, raised and kept, then transprted to a slaughterhouse where they would be butchered and chopped up into parts where nothing would be wasted, because you have to get as much out of the commodity as possible. Many people hate this book because of how graphic it is when describing all those processes, and I think it is ridiculous, because the same thing is done in real life with animals, and they don't care, they even say that this book is porn for sadistic people, and I just think that there are people who want to legalize pedophilia, or rather, there are countries where pedophilia is still legal, because it is categorized as child marriage, and nobody does anything to eradicate that, so let people be happy to read a fictional world where humans eat other humans, as if that was too weird.
I would like to anesthetize myself and live without feeling anything. To act automatically, to look, to breathe and nothing else. To see everything, to know and not to say. But the memories are there, they are still there. Many have naturalized what the media insist on calling "Transition". But not him, because he knows that transition is a word that does not show how short and ruthless the process was. A word that summarizes and catalogs an immeasurable fact. An empty word. Change, transformation, turn: synonyms that seem to mean the same thing, but the choice of each of them speaks of a singular way of seeing the world. They all naturalized cannibalism, he thinks. Cannibalism, another word that could get you into huge trouble.
Marcos is going to be our protagonist, who was happy in the previous world, but since the transition everything has been deteriorating in his life. That's one of my favorite things about the book, not that Marcos is having a bad time, but we start when all his problems are already happening and we see him facing them, while remembering how it all started, from his relationship problems, to his problems with his sister. god, I hate his sister with all my heart. Marcos is going to be our sort of reality meter in this dystopian world, because although he is someone who benefits directly from the murder and consumption of human beings, at the same time he is someone who fulfills a role that only he can fill, which in turn causes him many mental problems, because he knows that what he is doing is wrong, but he keeps doing it anyway because he doesn't know what else to do. I would like to talk about other characters, but I'm not going to, Marisa, Marcos' sister, is a fucking miserable bitch. Cecilia, a loving person, but the world corrupts her and there's no turning back, which also happens with Marcos. What's the phrase? If you stare too long into the abyss, the abyss will stare back at you, beware of fighting monsters too long, because you may become one. Or something like that was, well, Marcos in the end becomes what he swore to destroy, and there is nothing more sad, cruel and real than that.
He gets out of the shower and dries himself, barely. He looks in the mirror, he has dark circles under his eyes. He ascribes to a theory that people tried to talk about, but those who did so publicly were silenced. The most prestigious zoologist, who in his articles said that the virus was an invention, had a timely accident. He believes it is staged to reduce overpopulation. For as long as he has been aware, there has been talk of resource scarcity. He remembers riots in countries like China, where people were killing each other because of overcrowding, but no media approached the news from that angle. The one who told him that the world was going to explode was his father: "The planet is going to explode, at any moment. You'll see, son, it will explode or we'll all die of some plague. Look at how in China they are already starting to get scared because of the number of them, they can't get in. And here, here there is still room, but we are going to run out of water, food, air. Everything is going to hell. He looked at him with a certain pity because he thought he was talking like an old man, but now he knows that his father was right.
I'm already bored of writing. This book can make you puke, it almost made me, who loves this kind of visceral, bloody and cruel content, almost make me puke, I always tried to read parts of the book either long before, or long after eating, because it wasn't easy to keep food in my stomach while reading how people ate people's hands and legs at parties, while the human who had his body part removed was still alive in the next room trying to recover and not die trying. The simplicity of the gory reality was too much for me to grasp and go all the way in without losing my mind along the way. One thing I never expected, was a sex scene, I mean, neither the lab where they experiment on humans, nor the process of tearing humans apart, nor reading how they held them in captivity, none of that traumatized me as much as that sex scene, it was very sudden and horrible, not that it was rape or anything like that, but it felt like it was rape, everything surrounding that scene was just horrible and desperate, the worst thing is that I could not stop reading, and it is not that it is graphically sexual, which it is, but the whole context in which the act takes place is disturbing, I will only tell you that they get to fill a little human blood, and if I remember correctly, there was an arm or a leg nearby bleeding out, it was horrible, I loved it, I would not read it again, at least not so soon.
