I have mixed feelings, honestly, but I kind of need to know what happens next... it is the author's first book, and look, if she does something well it is to plunge you headfirst into this super atmospheric fantasy world, ideal if you are looking for that dark forest vibe, with fog, half haunted, do you understand? Seriously, I think the setting is one of the best things about the book. Imagine that countryside, sort of... eerie, foggy, kind of spooky, with old castles covered in ivy... honestly, it really hit that 'dark fairy tale' vibe really well. The whole point is that there's a kingdom, Blunder, surrounded by a magical Mist that's dangerous... if you get touched by the Mist, especially as a kid, you get 'infected' and boom! You can develop wild magic, which is strictly forbidden. The only magic that's valid comes from special cards, the Providence Cards. They're like a whole deck, tarot-style, you know? A legendary king created them ages ago... each card gives you a power—turning you invisible, telling the truth, stuff like that—but be careful, using that magic, or having wild magic, comes at a price: 'degeneration'... that is, magic wears you down, physically or mentally, little by little. And well, our main character, Elsbeth, was infected as a child, but instead of having normal magic, no! She kind of absorbed... something else: a spirit, a monster, they call it the Nightmare... and hold on, because it turns out it's the very Shepherd King from before, living inside her head! This, people, this was what I liked most about the book, I swear, he talks to her, gives her ideas, protects her... but he also controls her... he only talks to her with poems and riddles. Sometimes it's super cool, it gives it a mysterious touch and everything, but other times... I'm not going to lie to you, I felt it was too much, like very forced, like a children's story... but still, the idea of ​​having this... companion inside, this constant conflict, is interesting. >Hola amigos, espero que todos estén super bien, en esta ocasión, les compartire una nueva reseña, les hablare un poco sobre mis opiniones sobre: One Dark Window de Rachel Gillig.. lo acabo de terminar y, qué les digo... tengo sentimientos encontrados, la verdad, pero igual como que necesito saber qué pasa después.. es el primer libro de la autora, y miren, si algo hace bien es meterte de cabeza en este mundo de fantasía súper atmosférico, ideal si andan buscando esa onda como de bosque oscuro, con neblina, medio embrujado, ¿me entienden? En serio, creo que la ambientación es de lo mejorcito del libro, imagínense esa campiña así como... inquietante, llena de niebla, medio tétrica, con castillos viejos cubiertos de hiedra.. la verdad, le pegó súper bien a esa vibra de 'cuento de hadas oscuro', la onda es que hay un reino, Blunder, que está rodeado por una Niebla mágica que es peligrosa.. si te toca la Niebla, sobre todo de chiquito, te 'infectas' y ¡pum! puedes desarrollar magia salvaje, que está prohibidísima.
La única magia que sí se vale viene de unas cartas especiales, las Cartas de la Providencia, son como una baraja entera, tipo tarot, ¿saben? Las creó un rey legendario hace un montón.. cada carta te da un poder – hacerte invisible, decir la verdad, cosas así – pero ojo, usar esa magia, o tener la magia salvaje, tiene un precio: la 'degeneración'.. o sea, la magia te va desgastando, física o mentalmente, poquito a poquito. Y bueno, nuestra prota, Elsbeth, se infectó de niña, pero en vez de tener magia así normalita, ¡no! Ella como que absorbió... otra cosa: un espíritu, un monstruo, que le llaman la Pesadilla (the Nightmare).. y agárrense, ¡porque resulta que es el mismísimo Rey Pastor de antes, viviendo dentro de su cabeza! Esto, gente, esto fue de lo que más me gustó del libro, se los juro, le habla, le da ideas, la protege... pero también la controla.. solo le habla con poemas y acertijos. A veces es súper cool, le da un toque misterioso y todo, pero otras veces... no les voy a mentir, sentí que era demasiado, como muy forzado, como de cuentito infantil.. pero igual, la idea de tener este... compañero ahí adentro, ese conflicto constante, está interesante. ---  Image generated with FLUX. They have to collect twelve types of Providence Cards that are lost around here, and our Elsbeth, who is keeping her secret well-kept, ends up getting into this mess with the Captain of the King's Destriers, a certain Raven who has a dangerous side, and with more people, to find these cards... having this mission structure, the truth is, gives a clear objective to the book, and that is appreciated, buuuut... here comes the 'but'. The execution... oh, people, the book starts slowly... it takes you a while to fully understand how the world works, what's up with the cards, the history, the political disputes between those in power now and what the Shepherd King left behind, it's a complex world, and although the author describes it super well, you do need to be patient to get into it... easy, during the first half or so, I was like... "Okay, okay, it's cool... but it's not blowing my mind", you know? It felt kind of familiar, touching on some typical fantasy themes without giving it a super new twist at the beginning... but, in the last... what do I know, 100 pages? that's when things really heat up! The stakes get higher, everything starts happening faster and that's when I got even more hooked, definitely, it ended at a point that left me with a thorn in my side, wanting to know what's up with the next book, which is called Two Twisted Crowns, I got the feeling that this first book did a lot of heavy lifting preparing the groundwork, you know? And sometimes, it seemed to take a little while for it to shine on its own for that very reason... the style of describing the places and the atmosphere is brilliant, that's true! It immerses you in that eerie atmosphere, but the dialogue... sometimes it threw me off a bit... like they would suddenly speak super formally, very classic fantasy, and then they would say something more modern... it seemed like it didn't quite fit sometimes. And well, there's also romance, and look... things are divided here, even for me! I felt it was kind of... out of nowhere, like it didn't quite convince me, thinking about the characters, especially Elsbeth, who is super reserved and careful because of all her secrets... it wasn't horrible, not at all, but it wasn't what captivated me the most; I was a thousand times more interested in her connection to the Nightmare, to be honest. >Bueno, ¿y de qué va la onda en One Dark Window? Pues la trama principal es básicamente una misión, para curar al reino de esta Niebla loca y todo el rollo que causa, tienen que juntar doce tipos de Cartas de la Providencia que andan perdidas por ahí, y nuestra Elsbeth, que anda con su secreto bien guardado, se termina metiendo en este lío con el Capitán de los Destriers del rey, un tal Raven que tiene su lado peligroso, y con más gente, para encontrar estas cartas.. que tenga esta estructura de misión, la verdad, le da un objetivo claro al libro, y eso se agradece, peeero... aquí viene el 'pero'. La ejecución... ay, gente, el libro arranca lento.. te toma un buen rato entender bien cómo funciona el mundo, qué onda con las cartas, la historia, los pleitos políticos entre los que mandan ahora y lo que dejó el Rey Pastor, es un mundo complejo, y aunque la autora lo describe súper bien, sí necesitas tenerle paciencia para meterte de lleno.. fácil, durante la primera mitad o más, yo estaba como... "Ok, está bien, está chévere... pero no me está volando la cabeza", ¿saben?
Lo sentí medio familiar, tocando algunos temas típicos de fantasía sin darle un giro súper nuevo al principio.. pero, en las últimas... qué sé yo, ¿100 páginas? ahí sí se prende la cosa! Las apuestas suben, todo empieza a pasar más rápido y ahí sí me enganché mucho más, definitivamente, terminó en un punto que me dejó con la espinita, queriendo saber qué onda con el siguiente libro, que se llama Two Twisted Crowns, me dio la sensación de que este primer libro hizo mucho trabajo pesado preparando el terreno, ¿saben? Y a veces, como que le costó un poquito brillar por sí solo por eso mismo.. el estilo para describir los lugares y el ambiente es genial, ¡eso sí!
Te mete de lleno en esa atmósfera tétrica, pero los diálogos... a veces me sacaban un poco de onda.. como que de repente hablaban súper formal, muy de fantasía clásica, y luego soltaban algo más moderno... como que no cuadraba del todo a veces. Y bueno, también hay romance, y miren... aquí la cosa está dividida, ¡hasta para mí! Lo sentí medio... de la nada, como que no me terminó de convencer, pensando en cómo son los personajes, sobre todo Elsbeth, que es súper reservada y cuidadosa por todo su secreto.. no estuvo horrible, para nada, pero no fue lo que más me atrapó; a mí me interesaba mil veces más su conexión con la Pesadilla, la verdad. ---  Created with Canva Pro. Bye! >Y aquí hay algo curioso, gente.. dicen que es fantasía adulta, pero la verdad, a ratos se siente muy Juvenil, a veces por el ritmo, por cómo se enfoca mucho en los rollos internos de la prota, que es joven, chance hasta por el estilo del romance, pero ojo, la complejidad del mundo y cómo funciona la magia, eso sí se siente más adulto, así que está como en un limbo medio raro.. entonces, pa' quién es este libro? Miren, si a ustedes les encanta la fantasía súper atmosférica, con esa onda gótica o de cuento de hadas oscuro, si les gustan los sistemas de magia complicados, de esos que tienen su precio, y si les laten las historias de ir a buscar algo, tipo misión, yo creo que este les puede gustar un montón, sobre todo si les gustaron libros como For the Wolf (aunque, la neta, este me gustó más que For the Wolf).. ah, y es súper buena opción pa' leer en Halloween, le da todo el toque.
Eso sí, váyanse preparando pa' un inicio lento, ¿ok? que cuesta un poquito meterse bien en el mundo, yo le di como **3.5/5** estrellas, y es porque aunque amé la atmósfera, la idea de la Pesadilla estuvo genial, y cómo el final se puso bueno y rápido, la verdad es que el ritmo lento del principio, que a veces se sintiera medio repetitivo por usar cosas que ya hemos visto mucho en fantasía, y algunas cositas que quedaron medio flojas (como el romance, para mí), pero miren, es un primer libro prometedor, tiene potencial la autora, y la verdad, sí me dejó lo suficientemente picado como para querer saber cómo termina toda esta historia.. y bueno, esto es todo por hoy, nos veremos en las próximas reseñas, cuidense!
