Na Balatonu je spousta oblíbených letovisek, které jsou přes léto obloženy milovníky koupání a vodních sportů. Městečko Tihany (čte se Tyhaň) ležící na stejnojmenném poloostrově sice též disponuje plážemi, ale většina z nich je ve vlastnictví rezortů a nejsou volně přístupné, a placená městská pláž stojí za starou belu.

Special place at the banks of Balaton is Tihany Peninsule and the village with the same name on it. The beaches there are mainly in a private property (or the property of resorts). Městečko má úplně jiné kvality. Na návrší se vypíná benediktinský klášter, založený v 11. století a v jeho okolí se nachází starobylé domky, z nich je velká část pokrytá doškovými střechami.
But Tihany is a gem on its own. On the top of the hill is a Benedictian abbey founded in 11th century. Around the church is a lot of time-honored tiny houses, with thatched rooves on many of them.
Díky pěstování a zpracování levandule je poloostrov nazýván maďarské Provence. Koupit výrobky a potraviny z této byliny je možné takřka na každém kroku, místní manufaktury též nabízejí exkurze a workshopy.

Nejvíce mě uchvátily mnišské byty bratry benediktýny vytesané do skal v 11. století a obývány až do 14. století. Do dnešních dní se dochovaly tři obydlí. Jsou schovány v lese nedaleko silnice do Balatonfüredu a vede k nim turistická stezka. Na to, o jakou raritu se jedná, je téměř nevyužívaná. Což je ale nejspíš pro ochranu památky dobře.

Do Tihany se dá dojet autem, autobusem i vlakem, nejstylovější je ale cesta přes Balaton trajektem.
