My Contiki 1991 tour Europe went through Italy. It started at the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is amazing that it is still standing today.

I have no recollection of all the other white church buildings, maybe I was hiding from the rain in the bus. Photo by Joshua Kettle on Unsplash

We did the group photo in Florence. How much better did the professional photographer made 34 years ago?

My tour group was a pretty young group of people from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, America, Canada and Mexico. I am not in contact with anyone anymore but did visit the Kiwi guys who got a jobs on a farm in England after the tour had finished. I do not think I could ever forget trying to sleep in there old cottage with a few windows missing in winter. At least it was free.

The town hall of Florence and a copy of Michelangelo’s David.

The crowded Trevi Fountain. You are supposed to throw one coin in the fountain if you want to return to Rome. It must be true, I did not throw a coin in and I have not returned. Even if I did return to Italy I would probably rather see some other places.

The Colosseum was probably my favorite site. A 2000 year old stadium that could hold tens of thousands of people. A UNESCO world heritage site and modern wonder of the world.

Pompeii was pretty cool too. A whole Roman town preserved by being buried in ash from a Volcanic eruption.

From Pompeii the bus drove onto a ferry at the bottom of Italy, Brindisi rings a bell and into Greece for a week before return up the north coast line of Italy to Venic
