I've lived in my home city of Liverpool all my life, and although it is world-famous for the band The Beatles Liverpool is much more than just 'The Famous Four'. The city has a creative heart beating at its core with music, poetry, art, culture and a vibrant street art scene.
The street art scene has been embraced by businesses since the successful regeneration of the city centre which has only increased the quality of the art you see in the city centre now.
Many bars and restaurants have embraced the city's graffiti artists, paying them to paint their buildings with colourful designs and motifs, as can be seen with the bar Crazy Pedros above.
You still see tagging around and about, and I don't find tagging that ugly to look at myself, but I know many people do. But the majority of graffiti art in the city centre now is split between talented graffiti artists practising their craft (as pictured above) and commissioned pieces like the Liver Bird that you can see below.
As I wandered the city last week to do my weekly shopping, I remembered how much inspiration I get (as a writer) from finding great street art around Liverpool. It is almost like a treasure hunt, as the artwork changes and evolves over time as new artists come and go.
I've had a bad case of writers' block the past 3 weeks, and nothing snaps me out of it better than a creative mission. Sometimes it can be a visit to a gallery, as with the month of poetry I was inspired to write last year after visiting the Lady Lever Art Gallery. Other times, like last week, going on a treasure hunt to find the creative beat of the streets is enough.
The art on the side of the Zanzibar club reminds me of Liverpool's musical heritage, and brings back fond memories of my youth, going to gigs here, drinking and meeting crazy creative people like myself. I have some loopy stories that I could tell about the Zanzibar club, but I think I'll stick to the heritage of the place today 😜
Many successful Liverpool bands, such as The Coral partly owe their start to this club. And the club have also hosted such popular artists/bands as Noel Gallagher, The Zutons, The Revelation, The Music and The Libertines.

As I walked back up the hill out of the city centre I happened upon another area where there is great street art, China Town.
Liverpool's Chinatown is one of Europe's oldest established Chinese communities, and Chinese culture is very much accepted and embedded in the city's life-blood. There is also a massive population of Chinese students in Liverpool, and the Chinese New Year celebrations here are massive.

The final spot I visited was just on the outskirts of China town where I knew there was a skate park. This spot hasn't changed much over the last 2 years since I visited it last, and you can see why - the street art is vibrant and almost cartoon-esque.
I used to skateboard in a previous life before my knees gave out on me 😂 and I'm pleased to see that Liverpool has embraced its skate culture as well with the new development. When I was skating there were no skate parks like this and we had to skate the streets, in a constant game of cat and mouse with the mountain bike-mounted police the city deployed to try and catch us.
My memories of street skating are a little more rock and roll maybe than going to the skate park, but it is better all-around this way now that skateboarders have a place to go when the police shut them down at street spots.
I hope you have enjoyed this lazy meander through sunny Liverpool to check out the city's street art.
Thanks for reading 🙂🌿
