Walking through its narrow alleys and seeing life unfold in the stilt houses built above the water was like stepping into a different reality—one far removed from the bustling malls and high-rise buildings of Cebu. 1000019416.jpg 1000019415.jpg One of the first things that struck me was the stark presence of poverty. The banks of the waterways were littered with piles of garbage, a heartbreaking reminder of the environmental and health challenges the community faces daily. It was difficult to ignore the sight of children playing nearby and families going about their routines amidst the debris. Yet, despite these conditions, there was an undeniable sense of life and perseverance. 1000019412.jpg 1000019410.jpg What also caught my attention were the colorful boats docked along the shore. These small fishing vessels are the lifeblood of many families in Mambaling, serving as their source of livelihood and survival. The bright hues of the boats stood in contrast to the muted tones of the shanties, as though they were symbols of hope floating in the midst of struggle. Seeing them lined up against the still waters, with the city skyline in the background, was a powerful image—one that spoke of resilience, tradition, and the will to endure.

The homes, though simple and often weathered by time, carried so much character. Rusted tin roofs, patched-up walls, and wooden planks balanced over water all told stories of resourcefulness and survival. I was amazed at how people here manage to build lives in conditions many of us would find unimaginable.

My walk through Mambaling left me with mixed emotions—sadness for the visible hardships, but also admiration for the community’s strength and unity. It reminded me that beneath the surface of poverty lies a wealth of human spirit and resilience. I left with a heart that was heavier, yet more grateful, and a mind that was awakened to the urgent need for empathy, awareness, and sustainable solutions.
