Hello Jewelry friends, I hope you are all doing well. Today I want to share some symbolism, wisdom, and meaning. I'd like to introduce you to a mysterious animal: the owl. This enigmatic bird is a very rich and complex symbol, with meanings that vary across cultures and eras. In Ancient Greece, the owl was associated with Athena, the goddess of wisdom, the arts, and strategy. Its ability to see at night meant being able to see beyond and bring hidden knowledge to our consciousness. I think it's a beautiful symbol and deeply embedded in the human pursuit of knowledge. That's why I created a wooden necklace with this figure. Below, I'll briefly describe the process until it was completed. I hope you like it.
Hola amigos de Jewelry, espero que se encuentren muy bien, hoy quiero compartir simbología, sabiduría y significado. Les presento a un misterioso animal: El búho, esta ave enigmática es un símbolo muy rico y complejo, con significados que varían a través de diferentes culturas y épocas. En la Antigua Grecia, el búho estaba asociado a Atenea, la diosa de la sabiduría, las artes y la estrategia, su capacidad de ver en la noche era significado de poder ver más allá y traer el conocimiento que esta oculto a nuestra consciencia. Pienso que es un símbolo hermoso y que está muy integrado al ser humano en la búsqueda del conocimiento, es por esa razón es que he realizado un collar tallado en madera con esta figura. A continuación les comentaré brevemente como fue el proceso hasta culminarlo, espero les guste.

I use a piece of wood measuring 3.5 centimeters long by 2.5 centimeters wide. I had this piece of wood stored away for a while, but I couldn't remember. While searching for some things, I found the piece where I had stored it, so I took it and began preparing it for use. First, I sanded one of its sides, since it was varnished. This way, I could draw the silhouette of the owl with the tip of the pencil. I did this looking straight ahead, little by little, and sometimes using a ruler to help me.
Utilizo una pieza de 3,5 centímetros de largo por 2,5 centímetros de ancho, esta pieza de madera hace tiempo la tenía guardada pero no lo recordaba, y buscando algunas cosas me encontré la pieza donde la había guardado, así que la tomé y comencé a prepararla para usarla. En primer lugar lo que hice fue lijar una de sus caras, ya que tenía barniz, y así poder dibujar con la punta del lápiz la silueta del búho, lo hice mirando de frente, poco a poco y a veces ayudándome con una regla.

The main way to cut wood is to do it along the edges, that is, to make the cuts on the outer outline. So I start on the right side, in this case half of the head, so I go first, sinking in the thinner-tipped knife and then using the flat-tipped knife, I extract the wood. Once I've gone through half the thickness of the wood, I cut the rest quickly but very carefully using the larger cutter.
La principal forma de cortar la amdera es hacerlo por los bordes, es decir hacer los los cortes en la silueta exterior. Asi que comienzo en la parte lateral derecha, en este caso la mitad de la cabeza, así que voy rn primer lugar, hundiendo la cuchilla de punta más fina y luego con la cuchilla de punta plana voy extrayendo la madera. Una vez ya he pasado la mitad del grosor de la madera lo que hago es cortar el resto rápidamente pero con mucho cuidado utilizando el cúter más grande.

Once the right part is cut, it's time for the left part. Using the same technique, I remove the wood, following the previous example as a guide. Once this part is cut, I also do the top part. The owls' faces have feathers similar to human eyebrows; these protrude from the head and seem to give the owl an emotional expression. I gradually make sure that the overall head is well carved.
Una vez ha quedado cortado la parte derecha es el turno de la parte izquierda, con la misma técnica voy retirando la madera, guiándome con el ejemplo anterior. Una vez que ya he cortado esta parte también hago la parte superior, los buhos en el rostro tienen unas plumas semejantes a las cejas humanas, estas sobresalen fuera de la cabeza y pareciera que le otorgraran al búho una expresión emocional. Me aseguro poco a poco que de forma general la cabeza quede bien tallada.

The next step is to model the main wings, both left and right. I gradually outline the drawn silhouette, finally showing the shape of the lower part, which would be the tail. Up to this point, you can see how the carved owl figure looks; now only a few small details remain.
El siguiente paso es modelar las alas principales, tanto la izquierda como la derecha. Poco a poco voy rodeando la silueta dibujada, por último se puede apreciar como queda la parte inferior que sería la cola. Hasta este punto se puede ver como queda la figura dle búho tallada, ahora solo faltan pequeños detalles.

Now comes the part I always enjoy most about wood carving: making the small details. For example, the first is shaping the face. Here you can see how the feathers I mentioned earlier are taking shape, along with the beak, and especially the space where the eyes will be. Then, at the bottom, I outline the wings and the feathers that go on the chest.
Ahora viene la aprte que siempre más disfruto del tallado en madera, hacer los pequeños detalles, por ejemplo, el primero de ellos es darle forma al rostro, aquí puedevn ver como las plumas de las que hablaba anteriormente toman forma junto con el pico, y principalmente el espacio donde irán los ojos. Luego voy haciendo en la parte inferior las delimitaciones de las alas y las plumas que van en el pecho.

Next, I do what I consider to be the most attractive detail: with the circular-tipped knife, I begin to create the eye sockets. Just like owls have that area, you can see how it's turning out. After that, I begin sanding the entire piece to polish it and make it very smooth. Then, to give it clearly visible eyes—those eyes that see beyond the mystery and the night—I use two small screws, which I place into the wood with the screwdriver. Then I sand again and, instead of varnish, I apply wax, and that's it.
Seguidamente hago lo que a mi parecer es el etalle más atractivo, con la cuchilla de punta circular comienzo a hacer la cuenca de los ojos, así comop mlos buhós tiene esa zona, pueden observar como va quedando. Depsués de eso comienzo a lijar toda la pieza para pulirla y que quede muy suave, después para que tenga unos ojos muy visibles, esos ojos que ven más allá del misterio y de la noche, utilizo dos pequeños tornillos los cuales voy poniendo en la madera con el destornillador. Después vuelvo a lijar y el lugar de barniz le pongo una cera y así queda finalizado.
FINAL WORK
It's interesting how in some indigenous and African cultures, the sighting of an owl can be considered a bad omen or a warning sign, sometimes associated with death or darkness, which leads me to think it can also be a symbol of protection. I don't believe things have magical properties of their own, but I do believe a symbol has a meaning that can shape our reality and allow us to perceive things that others can't. Es interesante como en algunas culturas indígenas y africanas, el avistamiento de un búho puede ser considerado un mal presagio o una señal de advertencia, a veces asociado con la muerte o la oscuridad, lo que me lleva a pensar que también puede ser un símbolo de protección.
