A trip to the city of monuments, rivers and memories - Szeged

This is the story of my trip to Szeged. A city located in the south-east of Hungary, at the junction of the Tisza and Maroš rivers. A city that at first glance seems calm and quiet, but in its streets and squares hides centuries of history, struggles, art and freedom.

Szeged is a city of monuments. Every square has its own story, every building its own memory, and every stone echoes the steps of people who have passed through here for centuries. In the very heart of the city is Trg Dom, wide and magnificent, with the huge Votive Cathedral, whose two towers pierce the sky. Bell towers ring out at noon, as if the city breathes in the rhythm of the past. The cathedral was built as a testament to the people, after the great flood of 1879 that almost completely destroyed the city. They say that a new Szeged - more beautiful, prouder and more defiant - has sprung from the ashes and water.

On the square, right next to the cathedral, there is a monument to the people's fighters, a sculpture made of bronze, which depicts people in motion - peasants, workers and students, united in the fight for freedom. Under the monument, in marble, there are words that cannot be forgotten.

Walking through the streets, I came across a statue of Ferenc Rákóczi, one of the most important fighters for Hungarian independence. His gaze is fixed on the horizon, as if he is still waiting for the hour to lead the people to new freedom. Behind it lies the National Park and the Museum of Ferenc Móra, the guardian of the city's past and history, where everything is kept - from Roman mosaics to objects from the daily life of the people of the Pannonian Plain.

On the banks of the Tisza, the wind carries the scent of water and forests. There, next to the river, stands a monument to the victims of the Second World War - a simple but strong stone with names engraved as an eternal reminder.

But Szeged is not only a city of history, but also a city of legend. Old townspeople say that in the underground corridors under the square, a golden cross was once hidden, which soldiers hid during the wars, and that no one has yet found it. They say that at night, when everyone goes home, you can hear footsteps from underground and the quiet whisper of the past.

At the end of the day, I climbed the cathedral tower. The view stretched over the whole of Szeged - the roofs, the Tisza river, the squares full of life. The city was in silence, but that silence spoke more than a thousand words.

Szeged is not just a place. It's a feeling. It's a story in stone. It's time travel. And once you visit this city, you will carry it with you forever.
