In addition to a few fridge magnets, I treated myself to a very special souvenir in Shanghai. I had had my eye on the 7Artisans 9mm F5.6 for quite some time, but it was always too expensive for me. How lucky that 7Artisans is a Chinese company and I was able to buy it in Shanghai for almost 40% less than in Austria. I couldn't wait to finally test the widest rectilinear focal length for full-frame cameras and went on a photo tour with it just a few hours after buying it. In this article, I'll tell you about my impressions.
Neben ein paar Kühlschrankmagneten gönnte ich mir in Shanghai ein ganz besonderes Souvenir. Schon seit längerem hatte ich ein Auge auf das 7Artisans 9mm F5.6 geworfen, doch war es mir immer zu teuer. Was für ein Glück, dass 7Artisans eine chinesische Firma ist und ich somit die Möglichkeit hatte, es in Shanghai um fast 40% günstiger zu kaufen, als in Österreich. Ich konnte es kaum erwarten, endlich die weiteste rectilineare Brennweite für Vollformat-Kameras zu testen und ging nur wenige Stunden nach dem Kauf bereits damit auf Foto-Tour. Welche Eindrücke ich dabei hatte, erzähle ich euch in diesem Beitrag.
I would like to show you just how incredibly wide the lens is using the photo above. Here, I was standing only about 12 meters in front of the 468-meter-high Oriental Pearl Tower and still had no problem at all getting the entire building in frame. I used a tripod and exposed for 2.5 seconds at f/11. The 7Artisans 9mm F5.6 is a completely manual lens. There is no autofocus, and you have to adjust all settings manually. This was totally unfamiliar to me at first, but I got used to it pretty quickly.
Wie unglaublich weit das Objektiv ist, möchte ich euch gleich mal anhand des obigen Fotos zeigen. Hier stand ich nur ca. 12 Meter vor dem 468m hohen Oriental Pearl Tower und hatte trotzdem überhaupt kein Problem damit, das Gebäude zur Gänze aufs Foto zu bekommen. Ich verwendete ein Stativ und belichtete für 2,5 Sekunden bei Blende 11. Beim 7Artisans 9mm F5.6 handelt es sich um ein komplett manuelles Objektiv. Es gibt keinen Autofokus und man muss alle Einstellungen manuell vornehmen. Dies war erstmal total ungewohnt für mich, doch ich gewöhnte mich recht schnell daran.
For the next photo, I stood under the canopy of the Oriental Pearl Tower, which you can see in the first picture, and took a photo looking up. Here you can clearly see how good the sharpness is for this type of lens. Even at the edges, I find it more than sufficiently sharp. This is already true at F5.6. Up to F11, it becomes even sharper—especially in the corners of the image.
Für das nächste Foto stellte ich mich unter das Vordach des Oriental Pearl Tower, das ihr schon auf dem ersten Bild gesehen habt und fotografierte nach oben. Hier kann man sehr gut erkennen, wie gut die Schärfe für ein derartiges Objektiv ist. Sogar im Randbereich finde ich es noch mehr als ausreichend scharf. Das gilt schon für Blende F5.6. Bis F11 wird es sogar noch eine Spur schärfer – vor allem in den Bildecken.
For the next shots, I went into the high ISO range of 12800 and tried shooting handheld at 1/20 second. Here I noticed an effect that can probably only be observed with such a wide focal length: while the images were razor sharp in the center, there was some motion blur at the edges. The lens is definitely not designed for spontaneous snapshots in poor lighting conditions. It also lacks optical image stabilization. However, after a few corrections in Lightroom, the images were still quite usable.
Für die nächsten Aufnahmen ging ich bereits in den High-ISO-Bereich von 12800 und versuchte mit 1/20 Sekunde handgehalten zu fotografieren. Hier zeigte sich ein Effekt, den man wohl nur bei einer derartig weiten Brennweite beobachten kann: Während die Bilder im Zentrum knackscharf waren, zeigte sich an den Rändern etwas Bewegungsunschärfe. Das Objektiv ist definitiv nicht für spontane Schnappschüsse bei schlechtem Licht gemacht. Dafür fehlt auch eine optische Bildstabilisierung. Nach ein paar Korrekturen in Lightroom waren die Bilder aber trotzdem noch ganz brauchbar.
Since it was raining lightly, I didn't set up my tripod and continued to take photos with the camera in one hand and my umbrella in the other. However, I had to tilt the umbrella backward for each photo, otherwise it would constantly be in the picture at this crazy focal length. In the shot above, I even used it as an element for the image composition.
Da es leicht regnete, baute ich trotzdem nicht mein Stativ auf und fotografierte weiterhin mit der Kamera in einer Hand und meinem Regenschirm in der anderen. Den Schirm musste ich aber für jedes Foto nach hinten kippen, denn sonst hatte ich ihn bei dieser verrückten Brennweite ständig im Bild. Bei der obigen Aufnahme setzte ich ihn aber sogar als Element für die Bildkomposition ein.
One highlight of this lens is definitely the pronounced starbursts. You can see how spectacular these sometimes look in the photo above. I love this effect.
Ein Highlight dieses Objektivs sind definitiv die stark ausgeprägten Blendensterne. Wie spektakulär diese manchmal aussehen, könnt ihr auf der obigen Aufnahme erkennen. Ich liebe diesen Effekt.
The last photo clearly shows how well geometric shapes can be used as frames at this focal length. With the right positioning, you can achieve almost perfectly straight lines. There is virtually no pincushion or barrel distortion, as is the case with fish-eye lenses. That's why these types of lenses are also called rectilinear. However, there is quite strong vignetting and no profile in Lightroom for automatic correction. The 7Artisans 9mm F5.6 is a niche lens. Its uses are limited, and it has its weaknesses and challenges. Nevertheless, you can have a lot of fun with it and use it very creatively. I don't regret buying it and am already looking forward to using it again next time.
Auf dem letzten Foto sieht man ganz gut, wie toll man geometrische Formen bei dieser Brennweite als Rahmen verwenden kann. Bei richtiger Positionierung erhält man fast perfekt gerade Linien. Es gibt so gut wie keine kissen- oder tonnenförmige Verzeichnung, wie bei Fish-Eye-Linsen. Deshalb nennt man derartige Objektive auch rectilinear. Dafür gibt es eine recht starke Vignettierung und kein Profil in Lightroom für eine automatische Korrektur. Das 7Artisans 9mm F5.6 ist ein Nischen-Objektiv. Seine Einsatzzwecke sind limitiert, es hat seine Schwächen und Herausforderungen. Trotzdem kann man damit extrem viel Spass haben und es sehr kreativ einsetzten. Ich bereue den Kauf nicht und freue mich schon darauf, es das nächste Mal zu verwenden.
