Saturday morning I woke feeling better around 5AM. I worked on photos for a while then finished the laundry and put it away. I got ready to go do pastures again at 6:30AM.
The 2 we had left to do would be easier, so I was hoping to harvest some of the fruit before we started. My general helper arrived about 6:45AM and we headed over to the Little Trees. We did the #10 York elderberry first and got a lot off it then moved down to the #4 Goodbarn elderberry. It didn’t have so much, but we filled a big bowl full. All the others had been stripped by the birds.
On the way back, we stopped to check the #11 Juneberry as it had had a lot of ripening berries when we put the netting on. But the netting had slipped and we only found a few. There are a lot more coming along. We fixed the netting and hoped to find more next time.
We headed over to the Little Trees II and the #3 chokeberry had none. So we checked the #5 chokeberry which had had a lot of unripe ones and we only found a few. Something had gotten in and eaten most of them.
So we moved down to the Reliance peach and there were a lot of ripe ones. Unfortunately whatever is eating them had damaged over half of them. We collected all of them that were ripe. There were still 7 left to ripen.
Once that was done, we headed to the barn for the wire and bucket of tools. I brought a soapy paper towel to wipe them down, but there was no hope for the wire. The middle pasture needed nothing repaired and the front pasture only needed 1 clip. We were done by 8AM.
My general helper went in for her shower, just in case, and while I was waiting, Tom who had come to do the foliar, said he had something for me.
He’d been spraying the New South flowerbed and saw the gable end top in it. Somehow the locks on the bottom, the channels on both sides and 2 nails had let go. We think the nails were too short and sent in at an angle and didn’t catch wood, just insulation. So another job for the contractor when he comes back in September.
I kept getting distracted by all sorts of things and never got in the shower myself until much later. So I have poison ivy on my arms. Sigh…
I cut up the damaged peaches and froze a quart of them. I harvested the squash, and the borers got the summer squash vine, so I pulled it out. The zucchini is still going strong.
Tom said I have a 5” diameter melon out there and a few white pumpkins. The orange pumpkin died a couple weeks ago. He also said he saw a good peach on the Contender tree, so we went out to find it. We ended up finding 3 of them. There were still a few left to ripen, if the squirrel leaves them…
I decided to freezer the elderberries to get the sticks out, but wanted to wash them first. So I got that done and set them out to dry before freezing.
Once I had all that done, I finally got a shower and rested. I ended up napping for 1½ hours. Around 3PM I saw a notice that there was an estate sale here in town so I headed over.
I figured it was probably pretty picked over and I was right. But I did find 3 small picture frames and some sneakers.
I was in bed by 8PM.
On Sunday I have to mow really early in the morning and get the zucchini bread ready for the memorial. We leave at 12:15PM and it will take up most of the afternoon.
