2012 was a big year for many people mainly because it was the year the world ended, remember that? Shortly before our Mayan apocalyptic downfall, a music video by a death metal band that sing about goblins went viral, and for good reason. As we all know, no-one did survive 2012 and that was all beautifully captured in Nekrogoblikon's hit song No One Survives. In the video, we see the bands mascot and active band member going about his normal daily activities including getting humiliated by Brad about his sales figures.
The band formed in 2006 and have produced four full-length studio albums, and one EP. Their latest album, Welcome to Bonkers, is a must hear album for metalheads and rock fans but I'll discuss that another time. Before 2012, the band had only really achieved moderate success although it's important to note that the fanbase they had built up was loyal as fuck. Nekrogoblikon are known for their "in-concert display of balls-incinerating spaz-metal pageantry" (according to Noisey), but it's probably their very unique band member and living logo John Goblikon who brings them the most attention.
John Goblikon is a real goblin, and if you say any different he'll rip your face off. If you'd like to know how a goblin is born, why his sales at the insurance firm he works at are low or where irony fits into metal then have a read of the Noisey interview with Nekrogoblikon.
No One Survives was taken from their 2011 album Stench, which blended melodic death metal with electronic elements in a way that works surprisingly well. After the release of the now viral music video for No One Survives, the band now had a much larger worldwide audience and the money began to flow their way. They've since gone on to produce two further albums, including the thoroughly good Welcome to Bonkers, despite constantly receiving criticism for being what is essentially a "lame joke". Maybe the world needs lame jokes.
What do you think of the video for No One Survives? Did you catch this back during the apocalypse? Let me know your thoughts and feelings down below, I always enjoy reading what you guys have to say. I won't be posting as frequently for a few weeks as I try to focus on different things, and also want to take the time to start writing some more in-depth articles on various topics for future dates.
