The Avalanches are an Australian electronic music duo, consisting of Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi, although there were more members who were part of the group in the past, but have since left due to disagreements. They make heavy use of sampling in their music, especially their recent second studio album Wildflower. They currently have two studio albums under their belts, Since I Left You in 2000 and the aforementioned Wildflower in 2016.
There was a staggering 16 years between the two albums, with the second album reaching almost mythical status before it's eventual release in 2016. They had a hit single from the first album, Frontier Psychiatrist which really is a cracking tune. In 2006, the Avalanches’ record label issued a press release announcing the imminent release of their second album and since their first album had achieved high amounts of critical and commercial success, the people were ready. But it would take another 10 years for them to finish off the record, due to a few setbacks and a lot of initial optimism.
“I remember around that point, we actually thought: ‘It’s just around the corner.’ Maybe we had so much music hanging around that it felt like a record was inevitable. Maybe we just needed to believe that it was really close, to keep us going. But looking back now, we were kind of nowhere near.”
Both records are classics in my opinion, and you really need to listen to them in their entirety to really appreciate what the guys have achieved. I believe there's a special edition of Wildflower due to come out this year, with a whole truck load of extra b-sides so keep an eye out for that.
